NFL 2022-23

Scary as hell to watch what happened last night...my prayers are with this young man.

It’s very scary. The medical staff did a great job, starting the CPR as soon as they did and then administering the AED.
Everyone at my workplace has AED training.

They did a really great job. All things considered, Hamlin probably had his cardiac emergency at the best possible location outside of the hospital itself.

It's crazy how you can say someone who just had cardiac arrest is lucky, but it's the truth. I still remember when it happened to Dallas Stars member Rich Peverley and WWE announcer Jerry Lawler. They were all receiving help within seconds which undoubtedly saved their life.

I wonder how long his brain was without oxygen?

Hopefully not longer than 4 minutes.

Exactly! It's like a relative of mine that's a respiratory therapist; they suffered an aortic dissection and collapsed while treating patients in the ICU. Skilled staff with the right training and tools were rendering aid within seconds; anywhere else and they likely wouldn't have made it.

You're right, while it may sound crazy to say it he really was lucky because everything he needed was right there in seconds; doctors, paramedics, defibrillators, intubation and oxygen, and I'm only speculating here but probably a thumper to maintain consistent CPR compressions. I saw this article by a doctor that breaks down the game day medical staff situation and the stadium is staffed as well as or even better than your typical ER:

I heard there is talk of the NFL considering adding an 8th playoff team in each conference. I suppose that might add some more interest to the Detroit/Green Bay game Sunday night as it would mean the winner would go to the playoffs, regardless of the Seattle/LA game.

That would be interesting, I wonder how the #1 seeds will feel about that. Whatever the NFL decision is, it's gonna be a disadvantage to one team and a advantage to another. Giving the reason for this, I'm ok with whatever happens. Glad to hear Hamlin is getting better. That's all that's important. In the end the best teams will win.

I sure hope they let teams know what's gonna happen before the games start this weekend.

The NFL announced today that the Week 17 Buffalo Bills at Cincinnati Bengals game will not be resumed and has been cancelled.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell informed all clubs of his decision earlier today, after speaking with the Bills, the Bengals and NFL Players Association leadership.
"This has been a very difficult week," Goodell said. "We continue to focus on the recovery of Damar Hamlin and are encouraged by the improvements in his condition as well as the tremendous outpouring of support and care for Damar and his family from across the country. We are also incredibly appreciative of the amazing work of the medical personnel and commend each and every one of them."
Among the key factors in arriving at this decision:
  • Not playing the Buffalo-Cincinnati game to its conclusion will have no effect on which clubs qualify for the postseason. No club would qualify for the postseason and no club will be eliminated based on the outcome of this game.
  • It would require postponing the start of the playoffs for one week, thereby affecting all 14 clubs that qualify for postseason play.
  • Making the decision prior to Week 18 is consistent with our competitive principles and enables all clubs to know the playoff possibilities prior to playing the final weekend of regular season games.
Cancelling the game between the Bills and Bengals creates potential competitive inequities in certain playoff scenarios. In an effort to mitigate those inequities, NFL clubs will consider tomorrow in a Special League Meeting a resolution recommended by the Commissioner and approved today by the Competition Committee, consisting of two elements:
1 - The AFC Championship Game will be played at a neutral site if the participating teams played an unequal number of games and both could have been the number one seed and hosted the game had all AFC clubs played a full 17-game regular season. Those circumstances involve Buffalo or Cincinnati qualifying for the game as a road team and are listed below:
Scenario 1

Buffalo and Kansas City both win or both tie – a Buffalo vs Kansas City championship game would be at a neutral site.
Scenario 2
Buffalo and Kansas City both lose and Baltimore wins or ties – a Buffalo vs Kansas City championship game would be at a neutral site.
Scenario 3
Buffalo and Kansas City both lose and Cincinnati wins – a Buffalo or Cincinnati vs Kansas City championship game would be at a neutral site.
2 - If Baltimore defeats Cincinnati in Week 18 it will have defeated Cincinnati, a divisional opponent, twice but will not be able to host a playoff game because Cincinnati will have a higher winning percentage for a 16-game schedule than Baltimore will for a 17-game schedule.
If Baltimore defeats Cincinnati and if those two clubs are schedule to play a Wild Card game against one another, the site for that game would be determined by a coin toss. If Cincinnati wins the Week 18 game or if Baltimore and Cincinnati are not scheduled to play one another in the Wild Card round, the game sites would be determined by the regular scheduling procedures.
"As we considered the football schedule, our principles have been to limit disruption across the league and minimize competitive inequities," Goodell said. "I recognize that there is no perfect solution. The proposal we are asking the ownership to consider, however, addresses the most significant potential equitable issues created by the difficult, but necessary, decision not to play the game under these extraordinary circumstances."

I guess Cincinnati won the AFC North then.
Think they kinda did it in a way that potentially screws up to four teams. I liked the idea of staggered AFC/NFC playoffs.

I’m not sure why a potential Bills/Bengals Divisional Round game wouldn’t also go to a neutral site. I think Cincy actually got screwed the most for doing the right thing.

Not really, they could have loss to the Bills. That game was far from over. Then the Baltimore game would have mattered. They won the North by default. Who's to say what would've happened. What else could the NFL have done, if they have staggered the playoffs, the NFC Champs would have a extra week before super bowl.

The most likely scenario is they beat whatever is left of Baltimore’s roster, except they can’t move their seed any higher than 3. Had they beaten both Buffalo and Baltimore the Bengals could’ve gotten as high as the 1 seed, but will wind up playing neither the Chiefs nor the Bills at home.

If they lose to Baltimore there’s a still a coin flip for home field in a potential 3/6 Wild Card matchup against the Ravens. They play a harder schedule next year no matter what via being the North champ no matter what too.

Just make it a tie and don’t do that neutral site stuff.

Nothing sweeter than seeing a Buffalo win in KC if so.

It’ll be kinda interesting seeing a neutral site game tbh. I don’t mean one in a different country or the Super Bowl where there’s likely to be a bunch of neutrals or rich folk, but with both fan bases solidly represented.

Detroit and Indy have supposedly both said no. Lots of interesting college stadiums between the three teams that would be fun but I’d doubt the league will go that route.

Of course, with all the discussion of what could happen with those matchups down the road I’m sure the Chargers or Jags will go on a run now and render it all moot.

Like everyone else, I'm beyond relieved and joyous to see news of Damar Hamlin's continued recovery, and amazed by the medical intervention that took place to save him. Incredible.

I think the league is getting carried away with all of the playoffs contingencies that are made up on the fly. If the game is canceled, the genie won't go back in the bottle, and there is no way to be "fair" to everyone. There is a procedure in the league rules that in the event of canceled games, winning percentage would be used to determine standings and playoffs scenarios. This was known to be the stated approach during 2020, when the prospect of all teams not being able to play all 16 games seemed quite possible. Now they're doing something entirely different.

I expect the next announcement to be the addition of Jeff Gordon.
