Not making friends

It doesn't matter what you or I think of JLo's actions but what his fellow drivers think is paramount. If enough drivers think he isn't playing fair and square they will deal with him on track.
Maybe. But I think they all know he is aggressive and if they want to beat him they better get aggressive too.

Joey and Brad have two things going against and they aren't mutually exclusive. One, they are young and aggressive drivers (Joey maybe more so) AND two, they win, which ticks people off. Traditional fans want to see the 48, 4, or 88 bring home the checkered every week so now you have "younger" drivers like K. Bush even along with the 2 and 22 winning their fair share and it ticks people off. People hated watching a young Gordon start dominating the sport...then they loved him.

Would this be getting this much talk if say Chase had done what Joey did??? Probably not, because Chase has yet to win a Sprint race. Or Larson? Or whoever? Probably not....because the 22 has positioned himself in the last 3 years now to win the championship.

I can say with certainty that I don't care who wins I just want to see a good race. There are drivers I like more than others such as Carl Edwards, Jimmie Johnson, Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney, Matt Kenseth and Erik Jones but none I dislike or wish anything bad upon.

Chase & Larson doing that Sat night would not have rubbed drivers the wrong way. But if they went on to do it again, then again, then again, then again, then again, their reputation in the garage would mirror Joey's - not good.

To me a casual fan Logano looks like a fierce competitor and someone who will no doubt get a championship one day.
I appreciate his competitive spirit. We need more of it IMO

You still trying to defend that piece of crap? You think that kind of retaliation is excusable?

Get real man. Two biggest whiners and cry babies Kenseth/Gordon

What? Matt's tire went down. Lighten up. :D

Joey is an issue because Joey is a threat. I agree.

Penske defends drivers: “This is not a popularity contest”

Some may think Brad Keselowski’s outspokenness or Joey Logano’s aggressive driving style may sour team owner Roger Penske on the NASCAR duo. Think again.

Whenever either has had run-ins with some of NASCAR most popular or veteran stars or their willingness to speak their mind, neither Keselowski nor Logano have had a bigger defender in their corner during their respective careers than Penske.

It was no different following Saturday night’s Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway, where Keselowski earned the victory and Logano spun out Kurt Busch while fighting for position to the checkered flag.

“Look, this is not a popularity contest, and anybody that thinks it is, you know, we shouldn’t be sitting here tonight,” Penske said in the Daytona media center. “This is racing, and unfortunately some people have different ideas.

“But look, I wouldn’t trade these two drivers for anyone. They’re young, they’re aggressive, they win races. They work well with the sponsors, and they’re high-integrity guys, so move on from there.”

Funny, as I heard on radio this AM there are still people flying 3 flags at races and you'd think THEY would appreciate aggressiveness. DE made his way doing what JL does and to less extent BK.

Just another racin' deal IMO. That kind of stuff happens in restrictor plate racing all the time. Joey on the good side of it equals minds exploding. Lovin' every minute of it. Then again. I'm not a Busch fan either.

It's entertaining as heck watching the forum melt down anytime an incident involves the #2 or #22.

Lifelong flag flying #3 fan here.

Actually I think some fans really don't like aggressive balls to the wall racers because in real life they don't have the balls to do anything requiring real effort. Just an observation that happens to be true in many cases.:D

The drivers work with each other every weekend out on the track. I think the drivers know the difference between aggressive driving and forceful driving. I've seen many of the drivers run over someone causing a wreck, Lagano has few higher profile incidents but in the long run he may earn a reputation and a knikname like "Swerv'n Ervan" where any any spinout he is near will be blamed on him. In his latest incident it looked like he took out a car for a point (it could have been closer to a racing incident but he's already got a rep).

With the championship lottery coming down to one race you never know who will prevail in the lottery and JLo could win multiple champs. IDK if JLo did anything wrong with Kenseth last year and I had shut the race off and deleted it before the latest dust up on Saturday. It doesn't matter if JLo is popular, looks like a dork or what the fans think of him. What does matter is what his fellow drivers think and if they don't respect him or don't feel like he is racing them fair and square they will retaliate. It doesn't even have to be true but even if the other drivers perceive him as a menace he will still be dealt with.

Denny Hamlin and Carl Edwards both perceived Brad as a threat ( even in a Bush Car) very early in his career and did quite a bit to try and discourage him. Wrecking him multiple times in that effort.

Brad is now a champion, Hamlin and Carl are still in front of the cameras making excuses.
Joey will be in victory lane at Homestead and will get his championship (s) under this format or a fairer one. But lets get this clear, if Joey gets the green light from Roger, the war is on and none of those who want to retaliate against Joey can win without Nascar pulling his licence and that ain't going to happen. The Best way to beat a bully is BULLY him harder.

If you know anything about Daytona, you would understand that the moment Kurt moved up, drag slowed his car just enough that the gap was filled by Joeys car and that is why Kurt got spun out. The mistake was all Kurt's.

It's Funny reading this thread. Obviously jlo fans have learned nothing from last year. Still beating their chests screaming at anyone who will listen that this isn't a popularity contest. No ****, but you also can't just be a huge ass and have all of the other drivers hate you and expect to win championships.

I agree it makes it harder when no one will give you an inch but he makes it just as hard on them, the thing he has going for him is that he'll be around much longer than most who are whining about the way he drives.. and the ones coming up already know what theyre up against. Joey doesn't give anyone an inch on the track so why should he expect it back? Pretty sure he's made it clear that he doesnt plan on changing.. when he wasn't aggressive he didn't win races. Two steps forward one step back still makes progress.

After reading the comments of the board's unbiased, learned judges of racing talent, along with the thoughts of Mr. Penske, I've changed my formerly ignorant opinion of the two of them.

I now believe them to be aggressively reckless rather than simply reckless. They're both still goofy lookin'.

I really hadn't thought about it but his first foray with Gibbs he tried to do the thing everyone expected. Race without ruffling feathers and earn respect. It resulted in him getting picked on by the usual gutless wonder (Harvick) and then losing a premium ride. So now he is doing what he needs to do and screw the rest of them. Go Joey!

I have heard Dale's name mentioned in this discussion but regardless how Dale drove he had the respect of the garage. It doesn't matter if you are passive, aggressive or passive aggressive if you are not respected by your fellow drivers it will be much tougher for you overall.

If I had their success I wouldn't care what I looked like. Hot chicks don't seem to care. Look at Junior. Who looks more like Beavis than he? Ain't nobody uglier than Kyle B and he's got one of the finest out there. Money and success......all a man needs.

Sorry, most of us don't qualify....

If JLo feels driving the way he does maximizes his chances for wins and champs then that is what he should do. As long as he doesn't complain when his fellow drivers race him in the same way and accidentally nerf him or otherwise don't give him consideration all is fair in my books.

Hamlin caused a wreck that collected Joey earlier this year and that's exactly what he said. Hamlin did what he would have done in his place.

No driver comes into any racing series or athlete to any sport with respect as it has to be earned. JLo has been around long enough he should either have the respect of the garage or thought of poorly.

It doesn't matter what what a driver looks like but suffice it to say JLo and BKez will never be mistaken for GQ models.

Earnhardt also raced with men that acted like men, not the 7th grade girl cliques the Penske guys have to deal with these days.

And that matters how? Why does it get thrown out there in talking about race car drivers except for the same reason little girls do it to each other?

Because those bringing it up have that mentality.

Kurt, shouldn't even be running his mouth off. He's in a completely different league for bone heads. Do any of you remember why he got fired from roush racing? Because he crashed people every week. He was a hot head, the call came all the way from the top to can his butt. Ford told roush to let him go. Then he got to PR and proceeded to do even more dumb stuff and got fired again. Over the last few years he's really cleaned up his act, but he still crashes other guys in tough racing deals and people still get ticked off at him. It's called racing guys. They are all racing for the win, sometimes things don't go your way. But the drivers now today are so quick to grab a microphone and make an ass of themselves. Just leave it at it's a racing deal and move on. NASCAR is full of whinny babies and fans. Let them start targeting each other and tearing up equipment every week. They won't be in that car long, NASCAR will park them, the sponsors won't deal with it and you'll see someone get fired. Who knows in two weeks from now the 22 may push 41 to a win. Then it will be water under the bridge. Some of you guys make ant hill into a mountain. It's just Racing. Get over it. Thank you may now all return to your bitching.

I've seen numerous times joey has made a bad move and been taken out and attributed it to hard racing. See Harvick and Logano at Texas 2014.. He expects others to race him the way he races them and he doesn't whine about it when it happens.

..as far as I'm concerned this is what Joey looks like..

:bsflag:

Joey whined when Matt took him out after being raced poorly at Kansas.

The only intentional wrecks I've seen over the past few years was Matt's embarrassment at Martinsville last fall.. and that time Danica took herself out trying to wreck casey Mears. Everything else was just racin.. you have to take risks to make passes and when you take those risks you either make a mistake or you don't.

Earnhardt also raced with men that acted like men, not the 7th grade girl cliques the Penske guys have to deal with these days.

Guys like Ricky Rudd, Geoff Bodine, Harry Gant, Terry Labonte, Tim Richmond, Mark Martin, Dave Marcis, Bill Elliott, Morgan Shepherd, Kenny Schrader and Alan Kulwicki seemed to have a much different outlook and frame of mind compared to today's group.

And that matters how? Why does it get thrown out there in talking about race car drivers except for the same reason little girls do it to each other?

I think the looks of JLo and BKez are mentioned because they are successful drivers and are seen on various media forms on a regular basis. A large contingent of people believe that JLo and BKez have faces that could stop a clock, including moi, but who cares? How they look has zero impact on their ability to get their job done and that is the most important thing. If I am a car owner am I going to hire a good looking kid like Kasey Kahne or one of Penske's Bobsey twins?
