Patent Office Throws Yellow Flag On Redskins Trademark

What's funny is that the crowd that complains about political correctness is the first crowd to get offended and demand people be fired when someone offends them. At least the "liberals" are equal opportunity in their outrage.
That's bull$hit.

Washington Warriors. Just do it and get it over with.

More like the Washington Lobbyist. The logo would be the government in Washington steeling your money.

I can see both sides to this argument. I think the name will be changed, as Redskin really is kind of offensive when you think about it. If there was a team the Whiteskins or the Blackskins it would have changed long before. Now the one thing I strongly disagree with is changing the names to teams like The Braves or the Chiefs. Both those names are signs of courage and power and aren't really offensive. I myself attended Central Michigan University where the school is named the Chippewa's. Named after a large tribe that still lives in that area. The college took the name Chippewa's to honor the tribe for what was once there land. And with also permission from the tribe themselves they acquired the name. The school also agree to never produce a mascot because it may be seen as insulting to the tribe. I seen an article earlier today from some crap magazine stating Central Michigan college as well as other colleges like Florida State need to change there names as well because they are offensive. To me that is absolute crap, as I can see atleast with the Chippewa naming it is to honor the tribe with the tribes actual permission and not to insult it. As for names like the Braves and Chiefs, like I said Braves and Chiefs are signs of courage and power. Like calling a team the Warriors, or the Generals. I would be 100% against changing of the teams names.
Who's to know the original owners of the Redskins didn't get permission to use the name when the team started 75 years ago?

The thing to keep in mind is that the Washington Redskins represent our nation's capital. The most popular sports team that damn near everyone who represents the country supports has a name that a lot of people find offensive because it is a derogatory slur. Yeah, that's a great image. No wonder the rest of the world sees America as Neck Nation.

Who really knows if it is and if it isn't. The loudest protesters of the name right now seem to be guilt stricken white people. Sure there are a few Native American groups speaking out, but there are also some Native American groups that see it as an honoring name. So who really is making a big deal of it?

Who gives a **** about who our douche bag politcians support. The whole thing is superficial, it is just a friggin name, one that doesnt hurt anyone.

It doesnt change anything, and it will not change the treatment of native Americans, with or without the name their lives remain the same. But it does change the Redskins, one of the oldest teams in the NFL.

And they will always be the Redskins to me, and most everyone else.

Yes, yes, yes!!

They should have a different name. Just change it and get it over with. Snyder will make even more money when they do because Redskins fans will buy all the new logo and name gear quicker than they get a paycheck. Look how much Jacksonville and Miami sales went up when they changed their logo and jersey.

They were new update versions of their then current logo and jerseys. Big difference. I think a name change of a team with a history as rich as the Redskins might hurt them a bit. Sure some people will order the "new" gear, but then there will probably be a large group who will protest the name change.

People need to relax. Everyone's offended by one thing or another. That's life. Turn it off if you don't like it or you don't agree with it but quit trying to make the world conform to whatever happens to piss you off on a given day. It gets old.

Yep, we should allow this country to vote with its dollar. If people are truly offended then don't go to games, buy merchandise, support their sponsors, or watch on TV, but allow others who don't care or are cool with it do all those things. If Daniel Snyder's pocket books start to hurt then he will do what needs to be done.

I don't think it'll hurt. I think the Redskins fans will be butthurt for a couple weeks and then line up when the new gear comes out. Same fans threaten to boycott Snyder every single year because the team is the absolute worst in the NFL.

I will tell you where it will hurt and piss off people. A name change wont be good enough. After the name change the interest groups will go after all the old gear. They will demand it gets banned from all games moving forward. So any old jerseys, shirts, hats, ect...won't be allowed into any stadium, and probably not just in Football. A lot of people are going to get burned and they won't like it.

People need to worry more about what is important in life. If they're dedicating time to a name change than their efforts are misdirected. Do something that really matters. This is a silly topic that gets brought up every few years or so. Eventually the small minority will get their way and they'll come up with a name that doesn't offend any culture then they can concentrate on more important things like menu items. French fries is a good example. I can see where the people of France may not take too kindly to the reference.

I respect the hell outta many of the posters here and I'm not necessarily weighing in on the redskins thing, more some of the comments and attitudes I've read.
It's very easy for us privileged white folk to not be offended by mere name calling. Before anybody says they didn't grow up privileged or anything like that, let me say: neither did I. I don't mean it that way. I mean in a general sense.
We don't take offense to "honkie" or whatever because the people using it never had power over us. Who gives a ****? When has skin color ever really held the white man back in this country?
Also, "just go somewhere else or tune it out" doesn't really work outside of tv, unless what's being said doesn't hurt you, and we all know it.
Sometimes it's hard to leave the place you are. Sometimes it's impossible. It's just not as cut and dried as some make it seem.
It's also been a hell of a lot easier for a white guy to change his status (generally, historically speaking) than any other minority in this country.
Redskins might not offend anybody but the phony PC police. But then again, it might.

Having been pretty deeply involved in some minority cultures in the past, I can tell you, some people find similar things offensive. Calling someone a "wet back" for instance, can be pretty damaging to some.
Anyway, this became too long and rambling. You guys are awesome but sometimes putting ourselves in another's shoes is a good thing to do and might even change a body's perspective a bit.

Well I have to fess up.
I grew a "Dallas" Cowboys fan. In 1971 somebody asked who I wanted to win the Superbowl the Cowboys, or the Dolphins. I was 10 years old and choosing the Cowboys was a no brainer. And it was the first of many great moments that I was able to see Roger perform.

But recently I learnt that they should be called the Fort Worth Cowboys. Cause "Dallas" has ****ted Fort Worth out getting a lot of credit, it is basically a Dallas lifestyle and vendetta.

But I cant change they will always be the "Dallas" Cowboys to me. I have even remained loyal even after suffering thru the Jerry Jones era. Even though it must greive the folks in Fort Worth, I just cant stop the hurtful vindictive habit of calling them the Dallas Cowboys.

I guess I will go to Hell like the "Redskins" fans. It will just be a little more like Hell for having to put up with them. I will make it a point to remind the "Redskins" that they won less super bowls for all eternity.

Never, but there was a time in this country when Irish and Catholics were pretty unpopular in this country.

As for the "you need a powerbase to be racist", it's an excuse for the likes of Jesse Jackson to get away with what he's said about Jewish people over the years.
