Per Jayski.....

Penske Racing will in 2013 switch from Dodge to Ford in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition, automotive-industry sources have informed Autoweek. An official announcement is expected midday Thursday. Penske fields Dodge Chargers for #2-Brad Keselowski and #22-A. J. Allmendinger. When Penske returned [too NASCAR] in 1991 he fielded Pontiacs through the 1994 season. He switched to Fords for the next eight seasons, 1995 through 2002, before forming his alliance with Dodge which reached nine years last season. All told, he's fielded 1,503 Cup entries, won 96 poles and 71 races. His cars have finished in the top-five 333 times and in the top-10 573 times. Penske Racing has never won a Cup championship but has been top-10 in final points 19 times. But Penske Racing has been in a mini slump of late. It has won at least one race every year since 1991 but has only 18 wins in 768 starts dating to 2004. The year before, Newman won eight races, more than half his NASCAR career total of 15. The Dodge years, beginning in 2003, are somewhat deceiving. Newman, in his second full year with Penske Racing, won eight races for Dodge in 2003, by far the brand's best NASCAR showing since its glory days with Richard Petty in the 1970s. Wallace won once in his next-to-last season of 2004, and Newman gave Dodge only three wins in his last four years with Penske. Kurt Busch won 10 times for Dodge in his six seasons with Penske Racing, and Keselowski has won three times.

Official announcement later today.....

Probably gone. That will just leave Robby Gordon as the only Dodge driver unless they can recruit another team to switch.

That's a little shocking to me. Not so much the switch from Dodge but to Ford. Penske went with Chevrolet in the IRL.

Just no way that they could keep up with other manufacturers who have 10-15 cars funneling information in.Just not enough info .That's why I don't have any Penske cars in my top ten picks for the year.If you put them in two Fiats , same thing . Make those Penske cars Fords or Chevys and they are top five cars.

No kidding..... Ford in NASCAR, Chevy in Indy?

Penske ran Fords for a while and switched to Dodge. I feel Chevrolet would provide a much larger technical alliance. Also is he gonna run Penske power of Roush/Yates? I know there's a huge difference between IRL and NASCAR and Ganassi runs 3 different manufacturers in 3 series, but I thought when Penske went Chevrolet in Indy and how he explained the decision I thought if he switched it would be Chevy.

IIRC, Ford is not in the IRL? Maybe if they were he would have gone to them. In Nascar it is how big of a piece of pie you can get. By switching to Ford they will be getting a bigger piece of the manufacture pie than they would get with Chevy. That is the whole reason JGR went to Toyota. As for ditching Dodge, my guess is Dodge wasnt doing very good in producing the 2013 car.

Brad K tweeted that an announcement was coming but I never saw this coming. Obviously some teams will need to switch Dodge if Dodge hopes to continue.

2013 NASCAR go's back to a more "Stock Appearing Car" ......Teams immediatly start swapping brands for the most aerodynamic brand.
Really yall did'nt see this coming?

How would Penske know how aerodynamic the FORD is?

I know I didn't. I certainly didn't see anyone on here posting anything about it either. You probably shouldn't sit on that kind of information next time. ;)

Wow. This shocks the hell out of me. Penske owns so many Dodge and chrysler dealerships, Chrysler checks with him on major decisions. I read somewhere that he's very involved in many of their international decisions too. Perhaps he's getting ready to sell his dealerships to Fiat, who want outlets for their 500 and other models.

Ford makes more sense than Chevy. Penske will be a big fish with Ford, not so much with Chevy. Ford's are also showing an advantage the past year or 2, even though they didn't capitalize on it.

Me thinks Penske if flucked this year. They wont get much from Dodge at all.

Now we get to wonder if they use Yates engines, or form an alliance with RPM or who will Carl have to take his frustrations out on.

Maybe they can sneak DORF engines under the hoods of their Dodges.

I think that RPM also uses Yates engines - but how cool would it be to see The King and The Captain on the SAME TEAM?!.

But seriously, it can't be that difficult to change manufacturers in NASCAR. Sure, there will be some drivetrain mounting changes, and the team engineers will have to relearn power banding and throttle response (sorry to all Plate Racing Fans) but EVERYTHING aside from the engine itself is IDENTICAL on every CUP car, right? I can't imagine the decals have any aerodynamic values...

Didn't Robby Gordon change brands mid-season?

Sucks we might not see it on track Supposed to be unveiled @ Las Vegas.

DORF? o_O

I'm thinking the same thing. Very cool indeed.

Yeah, it shouldn't be too hard at all. Robby changes manufacturers more than anyone. He'll probably buy a bunch of Penske stuff at 60% off IF Dodge plans to remain in NASCAR.

Seen elsewhere.....

So which teams does Dodge approach? Possibly EGR. Although when I think of Montoya's incident on Monday, I don't necessarily think "dodge."

My guess is Dodge will call it a day. This is just like when Pontiac and JGR were building the new 2003 Grand Prix. JGR didn't like the way it was going and just went ahead and changed to Chevy. Pontiac was in the sport for one last year and even won a race with Ricky Craven at Darlington. After that they left the sport.

"This wasn't about money," Penske makes clear, indicating he wanted a manufacturer with deeper alliances.

Roger Penske says he currently has around 70 employees at his engine shop.

Ford's Jamie Allison indicates talks have been going on with Penske for months.

I wonder if that's what happened here. Penske didn't like the numbers on the new car and bailed.
