Praying Newman Is Okay

Thank God he survived.
I respect the families privacy and that is least anyone could do for them, I would never want that violated.

But I am still very concerned over the extent of the injuries. I will not rest easy about this until I know that there are no devastating paralyzing effects, or anything of that magnitude.
yep and so it begins. More of that dreaded thing most of us have a problem with..patience.:D

I honestly wonder how staying off the internet would have made us all feel yesterday.

I missed the accident and first saw it after it after hearing the news. After watching it now as it happened, I can honestly say that I wouldn't have expected serious injury at first glance. And given Gordon's and Joy's initial reaction, I don't think they did either. Totally different reaction to Jeff Bodine in the moment.

After seeing the replay of the clear driver side impact, it definitely would have been more concerning, but I don't think I would have considered death as a possibility if I didn't think about Dale, and the internet.

I guess my point is that superficially, the wreck itself isn't nauseating at a quick glance. Not sure why. We know it was, and that Newman was injured. Thank God he is going to make it.

same here, it took awhile to sink in that it was a serious crash. So many crashes over the years I see the drivers crawl out and in minutes are getting interviewed about the wreck. I think it was the third replay when they showed the hit he took and I still thought he was going to crawl out. Same thing with Almirola, I have seen many more serious crashes than the one he had and I expected him to get out and wave to the crowd. In my case the wrecks with injury are getting close to freak accidents the safety is so good it has lulled me into thinking there is very little danger to Nascar racing anymore. Back in the day it was always at the forefront.

Well said. Lulled you into thinking it's safe.

There are FAR more injuries in every major sport than in racing, yeah. You assume it's safe. Kind of easy to forget that without the safety equipment, almost every wreck we see would be fatal in a normal car.

I don't want to stir anything up, trying to not speculate, but I found this picture. It's the only picture of Ryan post crash we've seen.

Again, I don't want to speculate, but that looks like his left hand there, holding onto something. It seems as if there is nothing holding his arm up, which means he may have been doing it under his own strength.

I'm being hopeful, and I know it's speculation, but I feel (may be wrong) this picture indicates he was conscious when he was pulled from the wreck.

I can't tell if that is a bandage or a neck brace, or part of his Hans device on the right side. Like Larson's and Dillion's crash the roll cage is intact.

The only people that have any knowledge of the condition Ryan was in immediately following his wreck were the safety staff and medical personnel.

I agree with Mike Joy.

Maybe you and Mike can get together and he could explain the difference between analizing a photograph and speculating on Newman's injuries. I'll give ya an example but I really doubt that unless it comes from Mike himself it probably won't help much, but what the heck. Speculating is saying he isn't bleeding because I don't see any blood. Analyzing the picture is saying he isn't bleeding in the areas that can be seen.

some people don't know the difference between analyzing and speculating.
He literally said “I know it’s speculation” after stating twice that he didn’t want to speculate.

I’m not a moderator, people are allowed to voice their concerns. You can compete in your pissing match over semantics alone.

Of course. No one here is pretending otherwise. We don't know.

What you may not understand is that this is much less the facts, and much more about coping with the nerves and anxiety associated with anticipation. There is still a lot of emotion and anxiety fluttering around right now. People have every right to cope however they feel they need to, regardless of what Mike Joy has to say. I see this all the time. Unless a person is it doing harm to themselves or others, there is no right or wrong way to cope.

I totally understand that it is illogical to speculate, because it truly is. You're right. But it does no actual harm. EVERYONE is deserving of compassion and empathy here man. Ryan Newman, his family, all of the fans, Mike Joy, Jeff Gordon, Ryan Blaney, Denny Hamlin. Everyone who is emotionally effected by this.

Just a little different perspective here. My dad and I watch a lot of open wheel dirt racing and driver side impacts are probably the worst type of incident possible. We both shouted Hamlin got it and within seconds we were silent for the next couple minutes. I immediately thought of Bryan Clauson's fatal accident and only felt worse when I saw how Newman's car bowed out when LaJoie hit him and then land again on the driver's side. It was a very heavy impact and I'm still amazed that he survived. I just hope he's able to have a good quality of life after this.

You obviously have a better/closer perspective than I do. The slow motion replay certainly shows what you are describing here.

The update is miraculous news. They brought those screens out for a reason, and not a trivial one. Everything about it was ominous, and I feared the worst and felt it in the pit of my stomach. I'm so glad that he is still with us. I hope the news keeps getting better regarding his condition.

I am now so glad I missed the end of the race.

That was an extremely violent hit to the wall, but a hit weve seen multiple times now... the initial flip didnt have a hard landing but my eye was locked onto the crash and I didnt know hamlin won it until they showed him in car fist pumping. I knew the hit from whoever it was was violent.

The replay showing him essentially getting the nose of a race car plowed through his window made my heart drop. I was 99.9% sure we had just watched another death on live tv.

I still worry for ryan and pray theres no long term damaging effects. Him awake and talking is a very good sign. I wish we could get some more info.

Besides watching earnhardt qualify at rockingham in 2000 one of my earliest memories is watching the 02 race at rockingham and thinking how cool of a paint scheme it was even at just 6 years old. Newman has been apart of the sport as long as I can remember and I've always been a fan.

Good news all around. Hopefully the injuries aren't too serious. I'm gonna buy a Ryan Newman hat now.

Roll cages are amazing.
