The 2022 NASCAR Cup Playoffs kick off with the Round of 16 at the Grand Daddy Of Em All, the Great Southern Tradition ,the Southern 500 @ Darlington Raceway. 26 races at a variety of tracks have led to this point and now only 16 drivers remain to fight for the 2022 Cup Championship. This race and track has had so many former champions and HOF's grace their victory lane. Who will tame the track that is Too Tough To Tame and secure their entry into the round of 12?

Not sure who there infinite wisdom decided to take the throwbacks away from this race, but that was a crime

One of my favorite races of the year. One of the few races I'll watch the pre-race, every lap, and post-race. I absolutely love the racing at Darlington. Give me tracks that are incredibly difficult, so I can actually see the talent of these drivers on display. After the crapfest that was Daytona, I can't wait for Darlington.

It's absolutely a crime that this isn't throwback, or on NBC. Get rid of Homestead being on NBC, and treat the Southern 500 with the respect it deserves, a proper channel.

This race had two big marketing features - the throwback and the first playoff race. When the spring race was revived, it made sense to move the throwback to May, giving it a marketable stand-out attraction.

The Southern 500 is my absolute favorite race in the entire NASCAR Schedule. Something about the tradition of the race, history of the track, Labor Day Weekend, and all the former Champions that have won this race. It's a really special day.

100%. I will add it's probably the most difficult track I've tried on iRacing and I don't know how these guys manage it for 500 miles. Both corners are very different, place is narrow as hell, and with the abrasiveness of the pavement your throttle/braking points are constantly changing

I had a feeling the 5 was winning Watkins Glen and I feel the same here. ..Larson is due for a win at Darlington.

I feel like this one will be a slog similar to the 600.

I hope they don't run around just trying to save tires the first 400 miles a la Richmond.

I enjoy the throwbacks too. Recently it seems they are struggling to find something that also appeals to their current sponsors. I wouldn't be upset if they did a throwback once every 2 to 3 years to make it extra special again.

Not only a great track but I like the little bit of history left by calling it the Southern 500. I still remember the old names like Mason Dixon and Rebel, etc. I get we can't hang on to the past names forever but this one reminds me of the old days.

I loved the throwbacks but I think the idea was really getting stretched pretty thin the last couple of years.

And like most everyone else, I love this track. We went in 2017 and I can't wait to go back.

You summed it up well. It takes great driver skill with managing tires along with crews adapting to changing track conditions. For me personally, Jeff Gordon's highest achievement was winning this race 4 years in a row, it's an insane feat.

Even more proof we shouldn't be going to the same track twice in a season

Sadly I won’t make this one in person… made the last 3 darlington cup races but a vacation coming up has sucked up any spending money this month. Oh well, I’ll be front and center Sunday night!

The spring race was called the Rebel 400 because it is held on Confederate Memorial Day. I will say it’s nice to get away from all the NYC transplants for a day getting over to the Pee Dee region

Goodyear Fast Facts — Darlington

AUGUST 30, 2022 AT 8:54 AM

Set limits: Cup: 1 set for practice, 1 set for qualifying and 13 sets for the race (12 race sets plus 1 set transferred from qualifying)

Left-side — D-5168;
Right-side — D-5122

Right-side — 2,280 mm (89.76 in.)

Minimum Recommended Inflation:
Left Front — 20 psi; Left Rear – 22 psi;
Right Front — 48 psi; Right Rear — 44 psi

Storyline – NASCAR Cup teams will be worn out after playoff opener at Darlington: Due to the length of this weekend’s race and the abrasiveness of the track surface at Darlington Raceway, NASCAR Cup teams will have one of the largest allotments of tires available to them this season.

Cup teams are allowed 13 sets of Goodyear Eagles for the 367-lap, 501-mile race (one set for every 28.23 laps), and they will likely use all of them. Teams will take four tires at most every opportunity, even if that comes after just a handful of laps. In addition to tire management being important for the drivers, the Southern 500 also highlights the team aspect of the sport. With up to 13 four-tire pit stops in store, teams can gain or lose valuable track position based on the length of their pit stops.

“We’ve had a great 26 races in the regular season, and now we kick off the Cup playoffs at Darlington this weekend,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing. “This race is one of the biggest challenges for both teams and tires on the whole schedule. Running 500 miles on such a narrow track is tough, but then teams have to deal with the abrasive track surface that wears tires like none other. We expect to see more than two seconds of fall-off a lap over the course of a fuel run, so drivers who manage their tires will benefit on long runs. With 13 sets for the race, pit road will be a very busy and important place as teams take four tires every chance they get.”

Notes – Cup cars on same tire set-up as spring Darlington race: Having moved to an 18-inch bead diameter tire for 2022, NASCAR Cup teams will run a different tire set-up than those in the Xfinity Series at Darlington this weekend . . . this is the same tire set-up Cup teams ran at Darlington in May . . . these teams have also run this right-side tire code at Fontana, Las Vegas, Kansas, Texas and Nashville earlier this season . . . they are scheduled to run this same combination of left- and right-side tires on the Charlotte oval next month . . . with this 18-inch tire, and its lower profile sidewall, NASCAR Cup cars will not run inner liners in any of their tires in 2022..

Gerbils will be every other word pointing out tire management. Of course gerbil Jeff will be the the self appointed expert on tire wear pointing out every time a driver abuses the tires. Hard to tell if Jr will participate in tire expertise or not and of course Rick will ask the important questions like "how important are the tires?"

Gerbil Jeff has him a Southern 500 win. He's going to tell you managing your tires are paramount to having a good day at the Lady in Black and about those ever important playoff points.

I'd have to say my favorite race on the Calendar is the Southern 500. Followed by the Brickyard 400 (hopes and prayers), Coca Cola 600, Daytona 500 and Bristol night race. We grill out or order food for every one of these, its a festive atmosphere at my house.

Well, it is a track where one of his "oops, walled it" moments won't end the night... I kid, I kid. ;)

Always wanted to attend a Darlington race. Are there many motels near the track? Or do you have to stay an hour or two away? All the times I've been to Myrtle Beach in my life and I've never been to Darlington...

I haven't been to a race at Darlington either, but I looked into it a couple times. There are a couple dozen hotels to choose from within 10 miles of the track. Myrtle Beach is about two hours away.

Whatever you do I highly advise you not to go to the Baymont By Wyndham in Florence...that place is a gross disgusting dump.
