Random NASCAR Stuff to talk about.....

Johali, there's a reason why people look down on others but it's not contempt they deserve but rather compassion they need for the areas in which they're lacking.

A good example, if you need one, is when people ask you if you're mad as if they're taking some perverse pleasure in another's anger. Think about it ;)
I think it pisses some of'em off that I just answer with facts or opinion and dont get in a whizzin contest over trivial sheet. :D

I didn't get it in the first place..representing the south? who elected Larry Mac to represent the south, I thought he worked for Fox as an announcer. Who is Kenny Wallace or Kyle Petty representing? I'm confused .

I think Kenny represents the padded room straight jacket crowd and Kyle represents the people who don't care what others think of their opinion. I tend to agree with both sometimes:eek::confused:

Oh no..somebody get up there and cover Matthew's ears..Rutlidge is up in the stands interviewing race fans at Bristol.:)

FenderBumper, you should give Larry Mac a shout out, because he just picked your boy to win.:D

Heh Heh - YEP!

However, if I were a southerner I would take offense at how certain people choose to represent the south.

Maybe many of us realize that just because someone is FROM the south doesn't mean they represent it. Or maybe we're just able to overlook issues of grammar and pronunciation when the speaker has repeatedly demonstrated his message is worth listening to.

I'll take RUTLIDGE WOOD over Chris Meyers ANY DAY!
And twice on SUNDAY!
I take the 'Mute' button over both.

However, I probably mute Myers more often since he's on during the race. I usually don't bother with the pre-race at all, so I have fewer chances to mute Wood.

People just talk different depending on where they are from. Simple concept, no?

NASCAR originated in and has been, traditionally, a form of racing associated with the South... and as such, many of the folks involved tend to have "Southern accents". Larry Mac is speaking a version of English known to many as "Good Ol' Boy".

Having grown up in the South... back up in the pineywoods, over in yon holler... my dialect was Good Ol' Boy, as learned from the environment in which I lived. This was equally mixed with the King's English, the native tongue of my mother, who haled from Jolly Olde England. (The culture shock THAT created is a whole other story... lol)

Larry Mac's "butchery" of the English language does not irritate me in the least, though at times, even I shake my head, thinking "Huh?", and I'm relatively fluent in Good Ol' Boy. However, an individual denigrating another, because their manner of speech does not conform some arbitrary determination of the "proper" use of the English language, does.

But , in the end, what does any of this have to do with racing? Absolutely nothing...

If the poster who brought this up is so offended by Larry Mac's speech pattern, he has a couple of choices.... He can remain aloof and continue to grumble about having to associate, even if it is only through a television set, with those he views as his lessers, then pat himself on the back for being so "tolerant", or... He could open his mind, appreciate and enjoy the fact that Larry's speech pattern is only one of the many that make the United States an interesting place to live... Or, he could chose to watch a form of racing in which the announcers are up to his standards. Whatever the OP decides, I doubt Larry Mac's going to give a rat's posterior... after all, he's making pretty good "scratch" for a guy the OP apparently considers to be an uneducated bumpkin.

Of course, this is just my opinion and I've been told it's worth about 2 cents, adjusted for inflation that is.

Matt's a good guy Honu , and a big Nascar fan . This isn't really about an attack on southern culture , it's just a couple of his buddies raggin on him over a Larry Mac quote . ;)

Well at least I can have an opinion around here without anyone freaking out. LOL

Once Aiden leaves the nest I'll probably look to settle near Charlotte, NC. It's a progressive city with great southern charm. The climate is perfect and obviously it's near the center of the NASCAR universe with a bunch a tracks just a few hours away. My point is that if I had a problem with the south or southerners I'd never consider such a move.

So moving forward, I am going to continue to post whatever in the hell I feel like.

:)

Yeah Jeff will probably still be racin then.:D And the kids on the forum will hate it.

I'm quite sure Matt is a "good guy"... and his God given, good sense to be a NASCAR fan, speaks volumes about his character. I'm positive his negative comments regarding Larry Mac's dialect are born out of lack of familiarity with the structure and syntax of "American Good Ol' Boy", a language indigenous to the southern regions of the United States. I can sympathize with Matt... he fears and as a result, lashes out at what he doesn't understand.

Rather than criticize Matt, I suggest an "intervention"... that being, having Matt listen to a steady audio diet of Larry Mac-isms, non-stop, for a period of time, sufficient to provide him with a deep seated appreciation for Larry's "unique abilities" in the field of communication.

Of course, I suggest this course of "treatment" with the deepest respect for Matt's sensibilities. In fact, this may actually be of great benefit, it could potentially "inoculate" him from the effects of Good Ol' Boy overload, should he make the move to Charlotte N.C., a possible relocation he mentioned in a subsequent posting.

Matt, if you're reading this, feel free to contact me for assistance with "Dialect Inversion/Reversion" therapy.

DISCLAIMER: This entire post, with the possible exception of the first sentence (it all depends on how Matt takes it), was authored with tongue placed firmly in cheek. That is all...

Good lord, I stumbled into an online therapy session for the owner of the enterprise.

Jeff will probably be done in a couple of years but I that won't stop me from being a fan. In fact, I am kind of looking forward to just enjoying the racing rather than focusing so much on one driver.

As far as the Charlotte area, I have been looking at moving there for quite awhile. Once I finish my degree and get a few more years of IT and Network experience under my belt I'll have plenty of options. Hell, I may even decide to work for a race team. :D
