Top 30 in the X series is the NASCAR equivalent of a participation trophy. Show up weekly and don't S&P and you have something Grandma can put on the fridge.

Seriously, why do motor sports still bother with flagmen? Are they just kept around to give a celeb or sponsor exec a ceremonial thrill, or to server as a career goal for some kid on the backstretch?
Depending on the series, drivers get alerted to changes in race status by spotters or crew chiefs, lights around the track, lights on the dashboard, etc. If your number is displayed, you don't need to see a black flag to know you're in trouble.
