Daytona starts repairs on burned track section: Daytona International Speedway is scheduled to begin repairs Thursday (March 22nd) on the infamous Turn 3 track scar that was caused by a frightening crash, fuel spill and blaze during the Feb. 27 Daytona 500. Speedway spokesman Lenny Santiago said preliminary work -- collecting measurements and survey data -- began Wednesday afternoon. Santiago said once the engineers were satisfied with the data, the repaving process would begin. Fuel-soaked pavement, measuring 10 feet wide by about 50 feet long, is scheduled to be milled 2 inches deep, he said. Lane Construction -- which repaved the entire 2.5-mile tri-oval in 2010, a job that cost $20 million -- is working with engineers from ISC Design and Development. When asked about the cost of today's repaving, Speedway president Joie Chitwood III said, "This is going to cost us some money. It will be a significant cost to fix that area." The new blacktop has four layers of asphalt and is 7 inches deep. Santiago said the Speedway is still assessing the damage and does not have a timeline for the repairs. The area was contaminated with jet fuel after #42-Juan Pablo Montoya struck a jet dryer in his car during a caution period. Neither Montoya nor the jet dryer driver was injured. Bill Braniff, a senior engineer for Daytona's parent company International Speedway Inc., is scheduled to brief the media on the repair this morning.(Daytona Beach News Journal)(3-22-2012)
Some other ticket news being reported from ISC.....
ISC, discussing 1st Qtr earnings, estimates that at least 85% of tickets sold were used for the Daytona 500 on Monday night.
ISC notes that advance ticket sales are off 8%, last year it was an 11-12% decline.
Kinda interesting.....
At Martinsville, Richard Petty And Trace Adkins Nearly Steal The Show
On a typical week, no one can come close to topping the noise for Dale Earnhardt Jr. or Kyle Busch during pre-race driver introductions.
But the combination of NASCAR royalty and a country music star nearly did just that on Sunday at Martinsville Speedway.
Richard Petty and Trace Adkins, who have an ongoing "battle" to decide which headache powder – Goody's or BC – is better, were introduced together prior to Sunday's Sprint Cup Series race and received a huge roar.
It was almost enough to topple Earnhardt Jr. and Busch, but ultimately the Petty/Adkins duo fell short.
Here's how we calculate the "Gluckometer," and here's the top 10 from Martinsville:
Driver dB Type of Noise Comment
1 Dale Earnhardt Jr. 87.4 Cheers Like a rock star
2 Kyle Busch 87.1 Boos Fans still mad for...what?
3 R. Petty/T. Adkins 86.7 Cheers Combo received thunderous cheer
4 Jeff Gordon 85.6 Cheers 7-time M'ville winner
5 Carl Edwards 85.1 Mostly cheers Louder reaction than usual
6 Tony Stewart 84.9 Mix Usually gets all cheers
7 Jimmie Johnson 84.8 Boos Negative reception for JJ
8 Kevin Harvick 84.3 Mix Sounded like 50-50 split
9 Kasey Kahne 84.2 Cheers Pole-sitter
10 Denny Hamlin 83.0 Mix Virginia driver
Wow, are you ready for tandem racing @ Michigan International Speedway? They are talking on NASCAR Radio that there could be a possibility of restrictor plates @ MIS if the speeds are too high with this repave. Roger Curtis, President of MIS, says no, not going to happen. Keep an eye on the speeds. Keselowski thinks that they are going to be hitting 220 there once the track is dried today.
