Silly Season 2023

I Here's your problem deathbedders lol

I wanted to clarify and have on the record that I have no desire or "want" to disparage the sport.
Let me be the first to apologize. Its not you, it was your subject matter and this forum has been riddled with these kinds of excruciating pointless battles and I really thought we were getting away from it. Welcome to NASCAR where we all get along ...... sometimes. ;)

I had a bit of a nightmare posting over there. I was posting Nascar info like I do over here and I had a guy named Mopar that was trolling the hell out of my posts. I quit posting over there but Mopar followed me over here lol. He trolled everybodies posts and the mods finally got rid of him. I haven't been back. It was years ago.

Admirable. Well done.

We've had roughly 21-22 years of non-stop Indycar attendance and ratings arguments on another forum to last a freaking lifetime. We could have spent that time talking about racing, but attendance has always been the life or death issue.

These "discussions" were always contentious, often personal and usually someone gets a week or two off. You sound like you're sick of it too.

Just remember, these discussions are like hot poker in the ass and they always go sideways. It's not like we can do anything either way except do our job and go to the races, or at least watch them on TV.

All good, let's move on 👍

Also, for the record, I enjoy all motorsports. F1, IMSA, NHRA, Indycar, NASCAR and local go-kart and dirt tracks. I want to see all motorsports do well.

For example, I'm super glad to see the Coke 600 is apparently sold out, Indy 500 stands are on pace to have their best crowd since 2002 (excluding 2016) and F1 continues to see ratings increase. I love them all.

Many fans, especially those who might want to disparage the sport, don’t understand that just because the TV numbers are down or not at the sky-high levels they once were, doesn’t mean NASCAR is facing any sort of loss of popularity

I think the loss of popularity since '03 or so is undeniable. But a loss of popularity doesn't mean NASCAR / stock car racing isn't still successful and profitable. Tennis was insanely popular in the late '70s and early '80s. It isn't at those levels any more but it still a successful global sport. NASCAR ain't goin' nowhere.

I find the Indy Car forums on here more likeable lately, I’ve been lurking there more than usual but everyone is very respectable. I hope to find time Sunday to interact more with you ladies and gents over there. I’m behind on my viewings of this seasons races, I’m binging to get to the 500
You're either gonna love last week's Indy GP or hate it. Definitely get to it before the 500 because I guarantee they're going to show highlights.

Oh, look, the new guy doesn't like snowmobiles, airboats, or combine demo derbies. What a 4-wheeler elitist! :p

Welcome! Glad you got past the initiation! C'mon over to the open wheel topics; it's less bruising.

No downhill Barbie Jeep racing...rototiller racing...

I'd love to see Larson, and Kyle Busch from the NASCAR side, and then Scott Dixon and Josef Newgarden from the Indycar side all try the double, that'd be very fun for me as racing fan.

Kurt Busch did a hell of a job in 2014 at Indy, finishing 6th.
JJ has done a hell of a job thus far and I expect him to be a factor on Sunday.

More crossover the better I think. Get the best drivers from both, that'd only be a win for both series I think.

At this point I think it would actually be harder for JJ to be competitive in the cup car than the indy car if both were good equipment. His results were less than stellar the last few years on ovals in the cup car and to my knowledge he hasn't even driven the new car yet?

It's easy to make demands. You know what they did to give team owners more money thuis season? Cut payout money from open teams to the point that they theoretically can win the race and still lose money. Makes it pretty hard for potential owners to dip their toe in the sport without shelling out 10 plus million for a charter.

Cutting money to the tracks will hurt as tracks could get to the point they can't pay sanctioning fees and purses and give up their dates.

Like I said making demands is easy but someone will end up getting a smaller piece of the pie and not be happy

Or it will just be the same as it’s been?

Source for this information?

Tbh especially after last year I see at least 5, maybe 10 more years with the same line up of all 4 drivers at HMS.

Also while obviously a Chevy guy and not anytime soon if ever, I actually COULD see Chase wanting to eventually try a ford atleast for one season since that's what his dad drove for most of his career. But not saying it will happen.
My dad drove a Hudson, should I try it?

What information? About cutting funds to open teams? Listen to the DJD Denny openly discusses it

The information you posted.

You very clearly stated that NASCAR / RTA reduced funding for Open teams this year. What is the source for this information?

Denny Hamlin on the DJD

Thanks. I’ll give it a listen.

Running Cup races without a charter is a sucker’s game and has been since the system began. Doing it for less than they paid last year is financially suicidal.

I had the chance to listen to the entire Denny Hamlin episode on the DJD last night. I agree with literally every point he said, but 1 of the things he left out in my opinion was how gimmicky NASCAR has gotten. He made a couple of quick jabs at the stupidity of the playoffs and how diluted it's all gotten, I just wish he'd have gone off more on that.

The 1 point I thoroughly agreed with him was how NASCAR's broadcast partners are far too jokey before a race. Build these guys like they are gladiators about to do battle at 200mph and then you have Rutledge Wood being an idiot on NBC, or Michael Waltrip on Fox. I'd like to see NASCAR take themselves a tad more seriously.

As for the extra money to the teams, Denny to me makes a ton of sense.

A competitive car wouldn't change Pocono 2017. Jimmie didn't have a singular good run on an oval after that wreck.

Off-topic-ish.... In 2016 Jr. retired due to concussions. Carl retired unexpectedly after his hard crash at Homestead (remember too, his wife is a brain surgeon). Jimmie had his wreck in 2017 and has been a shadow ever since. NASCAR has been running cars 10-15mph slower since those days and you don't see 200mph ANYWHERE on the circuit even the plate tracks. I think NASCAR quietly has a CTE and brain impact problem, JMO.

But like I asked in above posts if the pie isn't any bigger who is going to get less? Are we going to take money away from tracks and force them to survive on ticket revenue? Not sure how many can do that anymore with what fans are now demanding at track. Are we going to take money away from nascar itself? They've already made a lot of cuts on the officiating and inspection side over the years.

Like I said making demands is the easy part. Do I think teams deserve more money? Maybe. But let's have them open their books up to see how much they're spending where and you might be shocked. To me it just seems odd that teams that spend every amount of money they can get their hands want more. The cost of fielding cars is not driving the costs up its the costs of engineering and competition. We all know that teams like RWR and Spire are fielding cars with a fraction of the budget that teams like HMS and JGR are.

Jimmy Spencer on with Dale Jr had said he is having issues with his brain

I think a lot of issues go unreported as there isn't a lifetime, league-wide health insurance organization in NASCAR. If there was we'd see more of this stuff. I think wayyyyy up in the NASCAR offices they have people working on stuff but they don't want to get word out that it is an issue. It's not like football where you can ban certain tackles and such... in auto racing there's always going to be drivers hitting walls at high speed.

Eric McClure passed last year. Apparently his health went downhill after his awful Talladega crash.

I'll just offer my worthless opinion, all while knowing it's probably not as simple as I'm going to make it sound.

But yes, take some away from the tracks and give it to the teams. Teams are investing in the series, I'm not sure how many tracks are. Also, from what I've either read or heard over the years, is that tracks could literally not sell 1 ticket and still make a profit thanks to the massive TV $$ that is there. Take some money away from the trackss and give it to the teams.

My concern though, is I don't know how much $$ NASCAR will get from the next TV contract.

It makes me think about Dick Trickles suicide. From the Wikipedia article

Trickle's family later released a statement which in part said: "He had been suffering for some time with severe chronic pain, had seen many doctors, none of which could find the source of his pain. His family as well as all those who knew him find his death very hard to accept, and though we will hurt from losing him for some time, he’s no longer suffering and we take comfort knowing he’s with his very special angel."
