Sports TV ratings, etc. Random sports talk

This NBA rise is getting a lot of attention and rightly so. I personally have never been able to get that into the NBA until later in the season. It will be interesting to see how this develops through the full season.

That reminds me of Indycar. They do the same thing post large increases, but the numbers are small so it doesn't take many to get the percentages, but in this day and time any increase is nice. By the same token when they say an NFL game's viewership is off by 35% compared to last year that is a whole bunch of people.

More than 26 million fans tuned into the Steelers/Patriots game. 26,000,000+. People are ready to declare this sport flatlined. Some seeming happy to do so. 25,999,999 others and I disagree. This sport is going to be around a long, long time. You can bet your Bitcoins on it. :D

25,999,998 others. I watched it also.

Except for the last Steeler touchdown being reversed it was a great game.
Even with that, there was no excuse for their play at the end of the game. We lost that game more ways than one.

I believe that there is little doubt that we'll be seeing a change in that rule before opening kickoff next season. The rule will be addressed in the offseason.

Yeah, I know it's declining. I'm no more worried about the NFL going away than I am NASCAR going away. Call me naive..... call me whatever you want. Neither sports are going away. I'll still be watching and I'm thinking you probably will be too.
ya can't use a comparison contrast to show that most sporting events are not growing in leaps and bounds around here. But reading many articles about the NFL have writers pining for millennials, calling for a different format (shorter) games, the whole ball of wax. Of course many want to crucify Goodell. Same as Nascar racing. Now football has pressure from the government, concussion issues, instead of tree huggers and the noise abatement crowd. I find it interesting.

Starpower might actually be at an all-time high right now. At least, the highest it's been in a couple of decades. More importantly, talent has both dispersed and combined in a way that the Finals are far from a foregone conclusion at this point. More teams have a legit shot this year and they also have a compelling youth movement like NASCAR does. It's also impressive that they're doing it even in spite of some injuries to big names.

sounding a lot like Brian

At a recent press conference, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said “attendance is off by one percent.”
“We are over 98 percent filled to capacity, which is about where we’ve been in the past,” Goodell added.
Judging by photos shared by fans this season, how could Goodell have said that with a straight face?

Most of these photos are of suck teams and gateway pundit is a hack site doing the president's bidding.

Jacksonville sold out their playoff game. Don't see that on right wing media.

Per Karp, here’s where the networks finished for average viewership for this year’s CFB regular season:

CBS: 4.951 million viewers, down 10% from 5.489 million in 2016.

ABC: 4.203 million, down 18% from 5.097 million.

Fox: 3.625 million, up 23% from 2.951 million.

NBC: 2.742, down 3% from 2.814 million.

ESPN: 2.155 million, down 6% from 2.300 million.

FS1: 819,000, up 4% from 743,000.

Fox was the one outlier, with record-high viewership thanks to its new Big Ten deal.

I haven't been able to find a figure yet, but this is good to see. More games on national TV is a good thing.

“I don’t think that meant less interest in college football,” Karp said. “If anything, I’d say the interest was higher this season compared to some prior years. If you look at total minutes viewed for college football, it had to be some sort of record this year.

Where else are viewers gonna go? ESPN has a stranglehold on Bowl games. The only good thing about that is that they are spread out longer allowing for viewing most every snap of every game. The only conflict seemed to be this past weekend and there was still little competition.

Why the NFL's Ratings Saw a Steep Decline in 2017

There is no sugarcoating the news for the National Football League when it comes to viewership: The numbers are heading in the wrong direction—and quickly.
Per Austin Karp of Sports Business Daily, viewership for NBC’s Sunday Night Football, ESPN’s Monday Night Football and the shared Thursday Night Football package (between NBC, CBS, NFL Network and Amazon) all declined for the second straight season.

Thus, my three factors in NFL ratings declines:

1) Nobody knows what a catch is.
2) Supersaturation.
3) [Insert personal bugaboo here].”

Lets see, cars too low, too many gimmicks, more short tracks..oh forgot, this is football.

I agree that the constant breakdown of catch/no catch replays with the same emphasis as the analysis of the Zapruder Film is doing nothing to help this sport. Sometimes I have to wonder if instant replay is doing more to hurt the sport than help it.

I think people are sick of the same team winning every year. And Dallas being national every week hurts too.

Protests had some impact I think. Not sure how much. Pretty much everyone I know who boycotted the NFL still watch the Panthers or never watched to start with.

Just like Nascar, whether you can admit that, it's the same scenario with the same end result.

All Four NFL Playoff Games See Double-Digit Ratings Decrease

Titans-Chiefs (14.7) was down 11 percent versus last year's Raiders-Texans game.

Falcons-Rams (14.9) was down 10 percent versus last year's Lions-Seahawks game.

Bills-Jaguars (17.2) was down 10 percent versus last year's Dolphins-Steelers game.

Panthers-Saints (20.4) was down 21 percent versus last year's Giants-Packers game.

Epic College Football Playoff National Championship Delivers Massive 16.7 Overnight, Up 9% Year-Over-Year

ESPN’s presentation of the epic College Football Playoff National Championship between Georgia and Alabama (Jan. 8 at 8 p.m.) delivered a massive 16.7 overnight on its Nielsen-rated networks (ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU) as part of its MegaCast production, up 9% from last season’s thrilling College Football Playoff National Championship on the same three Nielsen-rated networks. The ESPN-only presentation delivered a monster 16.0 overnight for the Crimson Tide’s overtime victory, up 8% from the ESPN-only presentation last season, a game which featured a dramatic, last minute touchdown to win the game.

This season’s College Football Playoff National Championship, the first ever to go to overtime, was also up 5% from ESPN’s MegaCast presentation (ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU) of the second CFP National Championship (January 11, 2016).
