Sprint Cup Race - Darlington

Anyone care to weigh in on how they think Miss Thang will fare in her first CUP race at Darlington? One can bet the farm that she will be one of the main stories for our friends at FOX.

My expectations are pretty low - no better than a 25th place finish. But I am hoping that she learns enough during Friday's N'wide race to help her out on Saturday and exceed my expectations. It's gonna be a tough weekend for her!

She will need to just focus on staying off the wall and out of the way. Top 30 or less than 7 laps down would be a good result.

The France Family has nothing to do with the number of commercials shown during the telecast of a race. There are probably some provisions for the broadcaster to include a certain number of NASCAR promos but other than that, it's out of NASCAR's hands.

The Networks pay NASCAR a set amount for the broadcast rights and then they sell advertisements in an effort to turn a profit.

It's easy to blame The Family for a lot of things but this ain't one of them.

Actually, they do share some blame there. The high cost of broadcast rights has to be absorbed somehow. Sadly, Fox passes that cost on to us in the form of bazillions of commercials.

True, but the Networks determine the dollar value of the broadcast rights and bid accordingly. Just like with Olympic coverage. There are several interested broadcasters and the contract goes to the highest bidder.

What I am not sure about is whether NASCAR determines which networks get which races or if the 3 networks get together and make those deals before presenting a final "group" package offer to NASCAR. I have done some looking and I cannot find anythig that addresses this.

Of course FOX (Speed) carries all of the Truck Races and ABC/ESPN carries the entire Nationwide season, so we are mainly talking about CUP.

The commercial overload problem is rather simple. Networks signed the deal while viewership was much higher. The networks set their ad prices based on viewership numbers. When viewership drops, so does their revenue. The only way to make up for the low ratings and 30 second ad value is to sell twice as many ad spots at the lower price. Sometimes, a content provider (nascar) will adjust the contract if viewership falls to much, sometimes it's written into the contract. I have a feeling the numbers fell way more than anyone had imagined, and nascar has refused to make further adjustments. The France family has maintained their huge profits right through this bad economy.

I think all of the networks show an average of 18 minutes of commercials per hour.

As bad as commercials are , the alternative is pay per view . And that would be bad news.

That would depend on the per-race or annual cost. As it is I have to pay for cable in order to watch the majority of NASCAR Races anyway - so it ain't free now!

As I understand it , pay per view is in addition to cable fees , not instead of cable fees . Your cost would likely be an additional $25.00 per race , more for special events like the Daytona 500.

It's pretty cool then that you feel the need to post in the NASCAR forum.
cool you say....why, ....I see it no different from you being cool in posting your thoughts, ...mine are mine alone, you are not required to agree or disagree......they will be truthful and my feelings...we all have opinions and I assure all, I can quite adequately express mine.....cool or not.

As for the commercial telethons, it may or may not be any fault of the France family, I do not know for sure....the lackadaisical way rules are made and enforced are square on their shoulders...the dictator like programs they force on announcers, the public and teams are the France family beau racy, all bad. The dishonesty upon the public to sell tickets, the give away programs that has killed real racing and so much more is the results of the monopoly known as NASCAR, run by the France family.

I would not pay a dime to see racing as it is now...and if it improves, I still would refuse to pay unless the announcers were also changed and not controlled by NASCAR.

What is it you don't like about the racing as it is now? Just the on track I'm talking about, none of the political stuff, lol.

You should start your own racing series. It's obvious you are an expert on such matters and can no doubt run things better than NASCAR. Your leap from anonymous message board poster to race series founder will be fun to watch.:)

I really should start working on that list of ideas that NASCAR fans come up with to make racing better, so I can apply them all to one series and see how bad it all fails.

How can I answer you without writing a book since there is so much wrong with NASCAR......lets just start with the lack of rule enforcement, then the terrible rules themselves, ....the participants that enter and do not compete, something wrong, bad wrong with that insanity. The give away programs that is anti racing, the mystery caution flags to control races,...the silly competition cautions makes no sense,...not enough cars for a full field, the lack of talent in the drivers in so many cars,...NASCAR needs a major overhaul, starting at the top and all the way to the bottom...........

I could say the same for you but it would be a lie for I know you as well as you know I.....you may have enough to run NASCAR or you may not know how to comi in out of the rain......your comment has no content.

Not directed at you but hey if you want to take it as an insult fine. I just enjoy the racing that we are lucky enough to get and can't stand people who have nothing better to do then trash my sport.

Yes Matthew.....I could improve NASCAR...but that is saying very little......a tree stump could be an improvement over the ones now in charge....in my humble opinion....

Wait a minute. Are you saying that faulty tree stumps are in charge of nascar?

Then you should avoid me, for you see, I know the difference in NASCAR today and when it was real.....It is mine as much as it is yours...I shall not be influenced by your opinion, ...do not be influenced by mine...I sure will try to influence the ones that matter, NASCAR themselves as I will remain determined to not accept less than real racing.......you do as you desire...it matters not to me.....

Danica better find a way to get lapped in style because she's going to be getting lapped quite often this weekend.
Was it darlington Buckshot Jones put Stewart in the wall while he was getting lapped?

Move along folks, nothing to see here....

In or out of style she will be passed, and like Andy says, quite often. Hopefully she learns and progresses. I'd like to see her be successful.

Passed? Crap, I thought he meant something else. ;)

Andy, Danica will be starting her 2nd cup race, and it's at Darlington. If she doen't wreck out, I will be truely impressed. I don't like what she did last week, but give the girl a break.

Andy has some serious competition in this dude.

not enough cars for a full field
Not yet, but I keep hoping. ;)

the lack of talent in the drivers in so many cars
How many first time winners have we had over the last few years? :)

I have recently grown weary of the negativity spewed by those who have only enjoyed this sport for only a few years. There is so much information on the internet that it is killing racing. We need to go back to getting a racing newspaper on Thursday. The anticipation kept me excited.
