Talladega Pre-race Race Thread

If you do go PM me and see if my friends are using their infield camping reservations. There are three different sets of my friends that have permanent infield camping reservations in the red campground, spots in the 60s and 70s, that overlooks turn one, nothing between them and the track but the fence. They cant go to every race like they used to so they let any of our circle of friends that want them have them for face value. There is no need for me to tell you why infield camping spots at Talladega are impossible to get. We go every two or three years, that's about all my old heart can stand.
Last year when I was driving from our Houston race to our Atlanta race I passed by the Talladega track, and I can say that tv doesn't do it justice. That place is huge. Watching cars come down the front straightaway into turn one has to be insane.

Let's see. a wild start, a huge crash caused by someone blocking(Hey Tony, let's stay out of it this time ok) back to single file racing, a late caution and a big wreck on the last lap.

Let's peel the shrink wrap off of this thing and get it ready for this weekend.

My guess is they haven't figured out how to transport it yet?

The most amazing thing about Talladega to a first timer is having to pull over and continue to be stunned by the thousands upon tens of thousands of campers in the rolling hills around the track. Another thing is its the only track that I know that has adult only sections with no quiet times ever and the entire infield is like that.

Then there's the story of the guy grilling his dinner wearing an apron and a huge rubber ***** hanging out from under it. Need I mention the mountain of empty beer cans nearby?

Or the group of "sober citizens" riding around with an open campfire in the bed of the pickup. And I don't mean in one of those firepit things, either.

Or like a lot of the girls that get tired of hearing "show me your tits" so they pull their shirts off and leave them off, and midnight nudist camp cornhole tossing competition, among many others. Prude, party person I don't care, I think everyone should experience the infield at least once. I have been to Mardi Gras many times and the infield at Talladega beats it hands down.

It sounds like Greg might have been there.:D

@dcaraviello
Although Denny Hamlin tweeted yesterday that he plans to start at Talladega, NASCAR has confirmed medical clearance not yet given.

Am I the only one that's not excited about this race? I hate having to say that now since I used to love and always look forward to restrictor plate races, but RP racing isn't exciting anymore. I miss when two lines of cars (or trains) would compete against each other and cars would move from train to train trying to move forward. Now, one train has a huge advantage over the other train all day (If there is another train at all), and there's almost no way to gain positions or make passes on track anymore.

I don't for a second believe that people who claim to hate plate races yet still watch actually dislike them. I don't like The Bold and The Beautiful or Duck Dynasty so I don't watch them.

I guess I can't fathom why anyone would intentionally partake in an activity which they find so distasteful

I watch to see how my driver performs. Though to be honest I'm usually surfing the net on my laptop or tablet until the final 10 laps. The first 178 are dull - especially when they run single file for 60% of it.

I dislike the principal of plate races, but I still watch because I follow NASCAR.

You may be a fan of The Brady Brunch but hate Hawaii, but you're still going to watch the episode where they go to Hawaii because you have to see what happens when Cindy Brady finds the haunted ancient Hawaiian god idol.

Now that you mention it, I suppose HMS is kind of like the Brady Bunch but would you still watch if they went to Hawaii four times each season ;)

I think you're wrong there Dylan , there will be cars that qualify back in the pack that work their way to the front . And there will be cars that qualify well , that fade back . In other words , there will be lots of racing .If your driver is leading the pack with one lap to go , I wouldn't give two cents for his chances to win .:D

And that's the only part I don't care for. You sit for a few hours, cheeks clinched, rooting for your driver just to watch them get freight trained at the end. Helps to like more than one driver.

I hear that . No one knows what strategy will win in . That makes it interesting for sure .

Anyone that's been around a while sure remembers Dale Earnhardt's last win at Talladega. Here's a good read of the behind-the-scenes story of Dale Earnhardt's last win nearly 10 years ago.....

Talladega is wider than Daytona; maybe side draft won't be as significant and a second line will be able to form. I don't know really, I'm just spouting off possibilities. I'm still looking forward to it though.

I always have mixed feelings going into the plate races....the way I see them is they usually have extremely exciting finishes, it is the part of the race leading up to the finish that is usually lacking lol

No mixed feelings for me...

So if Danica Patrick were to win at Talladaga would it really count as a win for her or would the DP haters say it really wasn't a win because it was a plate race and say it was a fluke like they do about her IndyCar win?

She could come from 5 laps down and win at Martinsville and they would still say that.
