Talledega Pre Race Thread

I liked the strategy of the tandem racing. It made RP racing more than holding your foot down and steering around the track. Like Tony Stewart said, you could train a monkey to drive a car at Daytona or Talladega (see Michael Waltrip's 3 RP wins).

How in the world would Danica get a new sponsor. Aspen Dental must of been desperate :p

Plate racing is as much of a skill as any other style of racing, it's just a different kind of skill. People saying it's all luck are wrong IMO. Does it take some luck? Sure, but it's not a coincidence you see guys like JJ, Kenseth, Smoke always near the front at go time.

I think it should be in the Chase because it's a type of racing that NASCAR has always had and is at the core of what NASCAR is all about. Really, it's the wrecks that are all a wildcard, and the guys at the front are usually able to stay out of them so I don't see it as anything to do with luck. What I see it as is the great equalizer, more than any of track outside of Daytona, the most amount of cars have a legit shot at winning and that's great if you ask me. They just need to fix this whole follow the leader thing and make passing easier.

^^^^this

I'm not a fan of the Chase but as long as that's how the champion is to be determined, the 10 Chase races need to be a good cross section of the races held during the season.

Meaning cookie cutters, short tracks, road courses, and yes, a restrictor plate race.

Seeing guys pull away from the field at dega like they do at a 1.5 is annoying & stupid. The track has it's most intense moments in pack racing whether it be going from the back to the front, drivers getting left out to dry in the outside groove, a wreck, the choice of which line to take, and making your car 4 lanes wide on the last lap.

Totally Agree!

That would just cause even more of that.

For sure it would cause even more chaos and mayhem, Nascar needs less of that , not more.

This is the finish that stands out too me with the tandem racing.

I remember listening to that finish on the 5/24 incar and if you watch the 5, MM got panicky when the spotter said four wide and letup, that's what cost JG any chance at the win, and JG being JG didn't throw MM under the bus for it.

Dega is one of my favorite tracks but I personally don't think that plate tracks belong in the chase. Too many things outside a driver's control can unfairly upset the standings.
An upset in the standings is what I am hoping for. Others may like things the way they are

The Titans are on track and doing their stuff.

qualifying has been canceled..order set up using practice times. Hornish takes the hit doesn't make the race because of it. Harvick starting last.

Aaaaand Hornish misses the race on number of races attempted. Dude can't catch a break.

I'm not a Hornish fan but that is stupid. Horrible rule.

He is clearly faster than the others outside the top 35.

If you re going to use practice speeds to determine qualifying order, use it to make sure the 43 fastest make the damn race.

I don't like Hornish and never will like him but that's just rotten luck.

I agree with beantown, there's no excuse for NASCAR not reverting to practice times for starting lineup if qualifying is rained out.

Joe Nemachek is a nice guy and all, but he shouldn't be rewarded for all his start and parks.

Hornish is a hack in a Cup car. That's why he was relegated to the Nationwide Series.

No one is arguing otherwise. He would probably cause a huge wreck if he made the race.

But that doesn't mean anything with regards to whether he should make this race or not.

Once again. No one is arguing that either.

Doesn't change the fact that it is a horrifically stupid rule.
It's easy to tell you haven't been on here very long, some on here are going to argue about every freakin thing imaginable whether it's on topic or not.

Takes a rocket scientist to understand the qualifying rules, I can't figure it out unless the Owner wasn't at the track so they don't award owner points? Sam was in the practices and has times for them.

Yeah, it's even more convoluted than the top 35 rule. Why they can't just have the fastest 43 cars race is beyond me. Who the hell cares if Junyer misses the race and his fans don't show up on race day?

He's not Top 36 in Owner Points and not a past champion, so for the last few spots it goes down to number of races attempted and he has only one so far (spring Kansas).

I think this is the part that pertains to Hornish-- # 3. race attempts.

If practice is held but qualifying canceled:
If the first practice is run, but qualifying is unable to take place and is canceled, the procedure for how teams are chosen to fill the field:
1) Top 36 in owners points.
2) Past Series Champions not in the top 36 of owners points.
3) Rrace attempts, ties broken by owners points rank.
The starting order is then set by 1st practice speed.
If two or more teams have no attempts, the team highest in qualifying draw gets in the race.
Provionals are not used and not charged to past series champions

yeah, I guess the owner points pertains to his car and not Penske racing et. all. So that makes Hornish and others who don't race much, have to qualify if there is an over flo of cars.
Yeah, it's based on the #12 car. For instance, Allgaier has only run a couple of races but the #51 car is 30th in Owner Points so he was locked in.
