The 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500

Not sure if that's the official reason but no time to react if something goes wrong if they're closer together.
I have seen a few drivers for this race eliminated due not beng able to control there cars during the preliminary laps
Just a guess but maybe the cars temps (fluids) were not up or optimized enough, along with the cold tires, and that causes them to more conservative on the initial green.

This year, like last year, is also one of the coolest on record so cold tires were probably even more of a concern than usual.

How come these cars don’t fan out like NASCAR does? No one is driving away from the guy behind them. It was like that back when I went to Texas. It was as if I was watching a drafting race.

It’s hard to drive away from the field when everybody has the same equipment. It’s probably been at least 20-25 years since you’d be able to do that at IMS. The slipstream is also very pronounced at 220+, and there’s always some element of fuel saving going on until the final stint.
