The news we were all dreading...

Seems like Kenseth really wanted that 5 ride at Hendrick. Kinda feel bad for him but then again he's making millions of dollars a year so not too bad lol.
Yeah, I agree with this. Matt has had 21 years of full-time Nascar racing, including 18 years in Cup. He has had a long, good ride.

Matt wants to race on, but he'll be age 46 next year. Father Time is coming and he's bringing the chrome horn. And Father Time is undefeated. Matt can choose to ignore this, but the others (team owners, sponsors) cannot, as they have businesses to run. I have believed for the last two years that Kenseth has lost a step on the racetrack. There is just no way that a younger Matt Kenseth would have lost that 2016 Daytona 500 on the last lap, IMO.

Does anyone really know what kind of money Matt was supposedly demanding during negotiations.
Or are people simply assuming he priced himself out of a ride.
The $8 million per year salary demand came from Allenbaba ( link ) so I guess that makes it a rumor, but a rumor from a very well-connected source. Good enough for me, YMMV.

It would be cool to see Matt go to running big late model races around the country with Ross.

Good point but the ability of Jones and Byron to bring in more sponsor dollars was probably a factor too. As already stated Kenseth wasn't fully funded.
I just don't want to jump to full conclusions off a single data point.
Some deciding factors may never be published.

That isn't the issue for most of us. It was the way it was done. Preacher should be apologizing for saying what he did. Going from everything is great, we just love this guy, we want him to stay here until he retires, to cutting his throat 3 months later. Compare that to Roush saying nothing about not renewing Biffle, or Hendrick saying and doing what he said he would do with Kasey and buying out the last year of his contract and finding him a ride. I'm glad Matt spoke out finally, eloquently. He got a raw deal, I hope after the season he airs out the rest of it. I guarantee there is more to the story.
Did the same thing to Joey pretty much.. I referred to it as being "Gibbs'd" earlier today.

Funky organization. Carl and Matt probably knew about the up and comers.

Have you ever run a business? If so you'd know that things change throughout the year, often rapidly. The sponsor situations are huge, and make or break teams (see current day issues trying to field cars).

Anyone who knows Joe Gibbs (and I know people who know him very well) will tell you how sincere and dedicated he is to his family, faith and his businesses. But, as a coach and owner, he has to make tough decisions. Matt made his (wants to be paid a certain level to race) and he didn't get employed.

You are right as running a business does not take place in a vacuum so what you would like to happen and what you plan to have happen can always be superseded by other forces that make you do something different.

I was a Matt fan when he was in a Ford. When he went to Toyota I was disappointed, but understood he was looking out for his own best interests. When he took that cheap shot at the 22 a couple of years ago, I wished he would blow up every week after that. Now that he's gone I'm glad. Don't let the door hit you on the way out Matt. However I wish him the best and his family the same thing. Enjoy retirement you ass clown! Haha

Karma is a bitch.......

What a crock. I remember Paul Newman's last racing season of sports car racing, he was 83 was competitive and even won his last race. There's plenty of drivers out there today that can still drive well into they're mid 60s.

I was always pretty neutral when it came to Matt. He was a low-key kind of driver. Kenseth seems like a cool, calm, and collected person behind the wheel. He has my respect; he's just not one of my favorites.

Wish him all of the best for 2018. :)

The REAL flagship driver at Roush was Martin........ Biffle... Burton..... Edwards....... Kenseth and many more.... including the current lineup would never have been there had it not been for Mark..... all of them..... including Jack..... owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude........

And Mark owes Jack...and Steve Hmiel for convincing Jack to put him in the ride. Mark had washed out once already.

As for Kenseth, I liked him until he blamed Joey after he wrecked himself blocking then tried to murder him t-boning him at Martinsville to blow his chance at a title. So....BYE!

Murder...:XXROFL:

I have been a Matt fan since Jip was a pup. I always liked his style of racing, methodical and patient. I hate to see him go, but, I understand business and how it works. If he was not upset with the way he was forced out, I would have been disappointed in him. I am glad I was able to meet and talk with him at Daytona this past July. Out of all his racing career he has been a stead fast competitor that raced hard and with respect to other competitors that likewise showed him respect.

As stated by DUNN24 earlier in this thread, I hope he gets back to Late Model racing with his son.

Because when you want to weaponize your car and murder another driver, you always do it at the slowest track on the schedule.
When the vic is about to win Martinsville after dominating and undoubtedly transferring to the title race you do....being a cheapshot POS like MK turned into.

He went crazy one time and it ruined his whole reputation with so many people, I never understood why. Matt was always a respected and respectful driver.

I take it back. There was one other time when he went rolling through the field during caution to let Harvick know he was unhappy. I think Harvick was deliberately trying to get him riled up. He laughed. It was funny to see the 'robot' angry.

I loved seeing "The Brat" pop up from time to time. He's like 99 percent composed, but has this 1% crazy streak that creeps in now and again. The Brad K. headlock incident was funny as all hell ... the junking of Logano was off the hook. The guy is a metalhead .. how bad can he be ;)

Funny comments from Clint Bowyer a few years ago.

When asked for his thoughts when he saw Matt Kenseth was involved in the fracas, Clint Bowyer, driver of the No. 15 Toyota for Michael Waltrip Racing, said playfully: "If Matt Kenseth comes running at you and puts you in a headlock and punches you in the nose, there's no jury needed, there's no judge needed. You're guilty. Period.

"This is the nicest guy in the garage and if you can get him to that breaking point, there's no sense of even saying anything. Just take your beating and go home."

I've always been a fan of Kenseth, one of the best of this generation. Shame so much leftover butthurt for justly deserved payback has stuck with him. Either way, 38 cup wins, 2 Daytona 500s, and won Jack Roush his first cup title. Hell of a career

Lol that's basically exactly how I feel about him. At one point he was probably my third favorite driver behind Joey and Carl. Now I'm glad to see him go.

I am curious, were you as glad to see Carl go after what he did to Brad K at Atlanta when he flipped him upside down at 190+MPH into the fence which crushed the roof of the car in 6 inches from Brads head?

We found out where his limit was. I have my guesses why it happened and I doubt Matt will ever tell us the whole story.

Little sensitive today are we? Lol

Honestly.. I never saw that race. Saw replays.. not a fan of it. But no, I don't feel the same way about Carl. I do feel similarly about Jeff Gordons move at Phoenix but it still wasn't as bad.

..and yes I am absolutely biased and yes it is because Joey is my driver... however I would feel the same way about it (albeit not as strongly) if he wasn't. Nonetheless that behavior has no place in professional sports whatsoever.

Well, it’s called payback and it was 100% justified. Joey showed no respect or remorse for dumping Matt at 184mph in a turn which could have injured him, so he showed the same respect by dumping the asshat at 78mph, which was expected and applauded by the crowd.

Shouldn't have priced himself out of a ride. I like Matt and it's unfortunate that NASCAR isn't what it once was, but guys like Erik Jones come much cheaper.

Payback for what? Being dissed when cried at Joey after he wrecked himself? Delusional.

Got into his left rear sending it into a drift through the corner not damaging is car after being blocked the entire straightaway down the front stretch you mean. Yes. If kenseth would have done the same thing logano did. I would have said well apples for apples but Matt turns his car into the weapon piledriving him into the wall like that. Now thats a piece of **** move

That's the moment I stopped liking Carl.

I believe the first time Mark entered Nascar it was in his own car. I think I remember a dark blue with the number 2 on it. When he couldn't get sponsorship he had to fold, I don't call that being washed out.
BTW, the story I heard was Dale E. told Jack he was crazy if he didn't go get that guy. Dale raced him and knew MM was a good driver.
You won't see his breed ever again in Nascar. Kyle B. with all his help couldn't even make an Xfinity team successful with Kurt driving YET MM did it for years before he sold his team to Jack. Koodos to Harvick as well.

A little sensitive, yeah maybe, Matt's my guy like Joey is you guy. :D
