I have been thinking about posting vintage stuff by the drivers birthday
(just the retired ones).
Hopefully it will lead tp learning about more drivers, cars, etc..

Mark Martin returned to ASA in the mid-1980s after his initial Cup Series stint.
His returned to the ASA was in a Thunderbird.

He would then go on to team up with Jack Roush to run the Busch Grand National Series and then the Winston Cup Series

Well, tightening or removing an air cleaner isn't exactly chief mechanic duties. But, I get what your saying. I think there a a couple drivers out there, especially in the truck series that don't mind a little grease. One reason I have a lot of respect for Jordan Anderson...and yes, Jennifer Jo Cobb.

In 1981 Richard Petty tested a Dodge Mirada during the preseason and evidently Petty Enterprises would have returned to a Mopar entry if all had went well.

The Aero wasn't good so they went with a Buick instead. Petty went on to win his 7th and final Daytona 500 in the Buick.

Darrel Waltrip blew two engines while qualifying for 1980 Michigan Champion Sparkplugs 400. So he drove the Joel Halpern car in the race (normally driven by Chuck Bown).
DW led 67 laps during the race and finished 4th.

Joel Halpern was set for David Pearson to drive for him in 1981 before losing his life in a racing boat accident.

Stock fuel cells (gas tanks) until the 1964 crash that claimed the life of Fireball Roberts.

Note: Ned Jarret helped to rescue Roberts from the burning car. Maybe others assisted, I dont know....

2005 Fall Chase race at Talladega, this race was a demolition derby with two flips and lots of cars torn up. Dale Jarrett got his last career win and the last win for Yates Racing in this event.
