Tony Stewart running over someone?

I think that they originally left the door open for someone that was not able to attempt to qualify for all races.

Tony Stewart will return to race at Atlanta this weekend

Three-time Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart will return to racing this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Stewart-Haas Racing announced Thursday.

Stewart had missed three consecutive races in NASCAR's premier series since he struck and killed Kevin Ward Jr. on Aug. 9 during a sprint car race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in upstate New York.

After spinning out, Ward exited his race car and was walking down the dirt track under caution when Stewart's car hit him.

Ontario County (N.Y.) Sheriff Philip Povero said Aug. 12 the investigation into Ward's death would take at least two more weeks. A spokeswoman for the sheriff's office said Tuesday there was nothing new to report on the status of the investigation.

:p;)

Probably what Helton will address...... 'Special Exemption'? 'Waiver'?

If he is in the top 30 in points why not. I know the rules say that a driver must attempt to qualify every race, unless execpted by Nascar, but might as well change that. That should go for every driver. In the top 30 and won a race, you are in no matter what. Unless there are more than 16 winners of course.

If Tony saw a therapist and was diagnosed with any kind of lingering mental effects then he could likely use that to get an exemption. NASCAR rules never specify "physical injury." He needed time off for mental health reasons.

Of course, NASCAR might say no anyway because the PR fallout from Tony being champion might hurt them.

Since Ward's death, NASCAR has announced a rule that prohibits drivers from exiting from a crashed or disabled vehicle -- unless it is on fire -- until safety personnel arrive. Last week, Denny Hamlin crashed while leading at Bristol and stayed in his car until safety personnel arrived.
But Hamlin then exited his vehicle and angrily tossed a safety device at Kevin Harvick as he passed by moments later. He was not penalized.

This idiot needs to read his own article. Hammy waited for safety personnel.

It's a slippery slope though. If I'm one of the bubble guys like Biffle, Larson, or Kahne, I'm pretty ticked if Tony gets a Chase spot that would have otherwise gone to me, despite Tony not meeting the criteria for making the Chase that was set forth at the beginning of the year. We may see a 17-driver Chase if Tony wins Atlanta or Richmond.

And my comment would be that Biffle, Larson and Kahne had 26 chances to win a race if they do miss the Chase.

He hasn't run well enough all year to win so I doubt he he would after missing 3 weeks

If I were him, I'd read a prepared statement, and ask the media to not ask him about the incident until he deems is the right time.

That's what I'd expect as well. But the day his rant about the media comes, or the next time someone in the media asks a question that pisses him off, it will be freaking priceless.

Stewart has worked magic from within a race car several times over the years. He is tenacious and a bit of a pit bull. He has started from last and finished first.

This is just the reason he needed to whip some butt!

Good news indeed for all of racing there will never be a way to make good on this incident, let's just hope that something of this nature never happens again.

If I'm Tony, I stay as far away from Sprint cars as possible. I'd even sell my sprint car team so I'm not tempted.

I'd be willing to bet Tony would give up all that's happened to him since becoming a NASCAR driver to just going back to his first love, "DIRT". He's dirt through and though, that will never change. I see your point and it is a valid one as the very dirt he loves has been very unforgiving these past two years, something has to give.
