Tony Stewart running over someone?

So, I've been avoiding this thread for the last 20 or 30 pages, but I'm watching the U.S. Open and I just saw on the ticker that Tony's gonna race this weekend! That is awesome news!

He hasn't performed all that well this season, so I won't expect much of him, but I hope he has a good run. Heck, I've never really been a fan of his, but I sure wouldn't mind seeing him win it.
 
Go smoke, he's always been one of my favorite drivers and I hope him and the Ward family can move on and enjoy their lives. RIP Kevin Ward Jr.
 
Stewart, who is winless and 26th in the Cup standings, would need a waiver from NASCAR to be eligible to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup with a win in one of the final two regular-season events. NASCAR, which requires a driver to qualify or compete in each race, has said it would not make a decision on a waiver until Stewart decides if he was coming back during the regular season.(Sporting News)(8-28-2014)
 
I wouldn't expect much more than a prepared statement to be read by Tony in his 1pm press conference. I wouldn't think he'd be able to say too much until the investigation is reported as being completed and even at that point, what can he really say?

Even though NASCAR has already released a statement that he is cleared to race, could Tony actually be announcing that he will be taking the rest of the 2014 season off? That could be followed by Helton's announcement that NASCAR stands behind Tony's decision to let due process take its course before Stewart continues his career in racing.

As far as ripping on the national media..... What could he possibly have to gain by doing that? People have already made up their minds on Tony. Most have anyway. He's not going to convince anyone that is not a fan anything different than they already feel. It's obvious to all of us the bias of the national media on this subject by everyone that is a NASCAR fan. I think it would make Tony look like a fool if responded like that.

I'm really surprised that he's there this weekend. I thought we wouldn't see him back on the track until the investigation is completed. Maybe it is and it hasn't been announced yet? Could the investigation findings be announced sometime before 1pm today? Perhaps.

Glad to see him back and happy for all of his diehard fans.

Not me...Im hoping he hits the wall hard and KARMA takes it's course...He should understand the 2 most recents signs he has been given...The third incident should really teach him a lesson............

The only signs I could see is to stay the hell outta sprint cars.

What do you mean exactly you hope he hits the wall hard and karma takes its course? One could assume you mean he hits the wall and dies. I would hope that's not what you mean.
 
I would be willing to bet alcohol and a battle ship mouth will land a fan in jail this weekend...

I think the deal in Ferguson had more to do with that than anything else. Seems like everybody stopped paying attention to the Stewart-Ward story once that blew up. But now they're back on it again, even a columnist with USA Today suggesting the timing isn't right.

If I were Tony, I'd ask the ward family if I could add Kevin's number on my car to honor him throughout the remainder of this season and possibly next.

Based on what some of the Ward family has publicly said, I don't think they're on real good terms with Tony right now. It'd be cool if Tony could do this, but I'm doubtful that the Ward family would be on board with it.

Racing is dangerous for anyone and basic racing history is full of signs for all drivers to see.
Any one of them that has been able to put a few million away in the account could be called foolish for continuing.

Obviously driving race cars isn't primarily about money for Tony, it is a pure passion. Given the choices of pursuing a life of ease or pursing ones passion I think Tony has made the better choice.

And if "Karma" does bite him one day, we will always be able to say it wasn't wasted the man pursued his passion and dreams, what else is there?

Seems like racing people even those who root against him should at least respect the passion. The racing world needs more like him, not less.

The family has asked for privacy, and I think that includes not drawing attention to the fatality.
 
Glad Smoke is back. Is the timing right? Who really knows, it may have never been right or wrong.

Healing weather it be physical or emotional is difficult and different for each person and circumstance. This will is some way haunt Smoke for the rest of his life and I pray he can find the fortitude to deal with it. God bless you Tony, and god bless the Ward family.

I hope Smoke has a fantastic race Sunday and feel that can be some of the best healing therapy for him.

HAMPTON, Ga. — Kevin Harvick and Danica Patrick will be glad to have their friend and boss back at the racetrack this weekend, and it’s not because of what he could add to their performance.

“I’m excited to have my friend back,” Harvick said Friday morning at Atlanta Motor Speedway. “I don’t really care about the racing side of it. I’m just happy to have my friend back and be able to talk to him and hug him and support him.

Stewart returned to the track Friday for the first time since being involved in the Aug. 9 sprint-car accident that killed 20-year-old driver Kevin Ward Jr. Stewart's sprint car struck Ward after he walked onto the track following a wreck at Canadaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports park.

Harvick and Patrick, speaking after giving rides to breast cancer survivors as part of a Chevrolet initiative, had not talked with Stewart since the accident.

Stewart, who has missed the last three races following the accident, is scheduled to make his first public appearance at Atlanta Friday.

The Ontario County sheriff’s office investigation is ongoing, and a county spokeswoman said Friday morning she had no update to the announcement Aug. 12 that the investigation would take at least two weeks and possibly longer. At the time, there was no indication that there was probable cause to charge Stewart in the death, which his team has called a tragic accident.

“I have not seen him, but I heard from him last weekend telling me, ‘Good luck,’” Patrick said. “It was good to hear from him, and it will be good to have him back.

“Obviously he is a namesake to our team, and we’ll be all on board to help him with whatever he needs. But he’s Tony Stewart, so I’m sure he will be fine. With it being a tragic accident, it’s something to work through.”

Patrick said there’s no way to know how many races someone should take off before returning competition after being involved in such a tragic accident.

“Trying to feel something normal again might feel good to him,” Patrick said. “It was a tragic accident, so there’s no timeline when you work through that.”

The three-time Cup champion will speak to the media about 90 minutes prior to his first practice Friday afternoon.

“I don’t think he’d be here if he didn’t feel like he was ready,” Harvick said. “He’s got a lot of great people around him and a lot of support. I don’t think he would be here if he wasn’t ready.”

The co-owner of the cars for Harvick, Patrick and Kurt Busch, Stewart will have plenty of friends to lean on throughout the weekend.

“For him, that will be great medicine to have some type of normal activity in his life again that he hasn’t been able to have,” Harvick said.

“From a personal standpoint, I’m glad to see my friend and be able to talk to him and be able to support him through probably what will end up being the hardest situation he ever has had to go through in his whole life. I can’t wait to see him.”

Harvick reiterated his frustration over the portrayal of Stewart. He had just done an interview for NBC, whose Brian Williams is a big NASCAR fan and well-respected within the NASCAR industry, trying to explain driver emotions.

“Our sport is just like a lot of other sports,” Harvick said afterward. “There is a lot of emotion involved in what we do. You see the highlight reels of people throwing stuff, or in his particular case, Tony throwing stuff or getting mad or saying things and getting into the heat of the moment.

“You can make that highlight reel for all of us or most of us with that emotion attached to it. It’s tough to see and hear the things that are being tossed that way towards him.”
 
I was waiting for a story like this. Tony is well loved by his teammates. I want a SHR 1-2-3 in the race
