Newman. 11th place finishes in the first round to out point several others... and then 6th place finishes all the way through homestead. And it’s just enough this year to do it.

That way we can hear about that all off season.

Like 2014 all over again. Except he wins this time. It would be even better if none of the championship 4 actually won the race but Newman was the highest finishing one and so wins the championship actually without winning a race all season long. Haters will have something to unite themselves and they'll allegedly leave following the sport altogether while continuing to complain about it every day. Hahahaha!!! Yes I want this to happen!

Newman is going to have to have top 5 stage points & top 5 finishes throughout unless the top 8 have some seriously bad luck. No way.

I would love to see it happening so people can complain lol.

I need this in my life to show A.what a gimmick this system is and B.) to watch this place, and twitter meltdown. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

I have to ask Rev, I see you refer to Toyota's as WE rather often. I remember your history, but do you have any involvement now?

My "WE" reference is a little dig at posters who get pissed when I refer to Toyota as MY team in the same way a stick and ball fan would identify who his/her team. I am simply an avid fan of TRD and Toyota.....the way I feel about Toyota is the same as the "Tifosi" to Ferrari. Thanks for asking.

Doesn't show it's a gimmick. Shows that consistency wins. The gimmick was the old points system where a championship could be won with several more races left on the schedule. That sucked.

Natural battles are better imo. I rather have an amazing season that comes down to the last race than knowing each year it just happens because rules. Forcing a game 7 moment isn’t anything like one just happening.

The only battle during the chase/playoff era I loved was Tony and Carl’s. Those last 10 races were amazing.

Playoffs are much better. I quit following the sport for many years because of a champion winning before the season was over. Didn't whine about it on the internet either. I just moved on to other interests. When most people dislike something they move on from it.

Good thing not everyone is the same. That would be boring.

NASCAR is manufactured drama. :D

I appreciate a NASCAR Season as a progression.

New team composition, rules, sometimes tracks, etc; comers-and-goers of the Drivers, CC, crew, Teams, Organizations; performance development of talent, TTPs, method, machinery, etc etc

26 Races is a good measuring window for a 36 Race Season in establishing the Playoff grid. Plenty of incentives and points in the formula to reward performers. 9 Races is also a reasonable window to set the Final Four.

There's absolutely nothing shocking about competition involving many top competitors running alongside a field of also-rans -- unless you find many Olympic sports and similar events shocking.

Expecting a Champion to defeat competitors in a Final event is not unfair or unreasonable.

IMHO

I’ll get my 2020 in early. Ryan Newman stays consistent after winning the 2019 Cup with no wins. He manages to top 10 the entire series to death in 2020 and cruises to 2 championships in a row.

And burrito will tear up after at least 3 12th place finishes

I’m probably the biggest Newman fan on this forum, and I while I would of course be excited for a championship, it would be the biggest joke of all time.

All Newman needs to do is win

May have sucked for you and you're entitled to that opinion. I'd bet you a large sum of money that the way you feel is in the minority. I didnt feel that way because the champion earned it... if he kicked everyone's @ss for the whole year and clinched a race or 3 early, oh well try harder next year. I always liked the storylines going on other than the championship as well you had guys trying to finish top 10 for the first time or top 5 for the first time or top 3. That stuff was exciting to me. At the end of the day it's racing and I will always love it. I dont expect anyone to see it my way or even care frankly, just my preference I miss the Winston Cup points....every race felt like a playoff race.

bingo, you nailed it. Why 1992 is still so damn cool is because that deal happened organically within the rules set up at the time and some of the other closer point battles through the 90's (Gordon vs Earnhardt in 95, Gordon vs Texas Terry in 96, 98 Gordon vs 98 Martin was cool because it seemed like those guys won every damn week, Earnhardt vs Martin in 90 and Gordon vs Yates Racing in 01 of some more recent memory. I also respected the hell out of Kenseth winning in 03 because that car didnt break all year, they were bullet proof and same thing with DJ in 99 who also was pretty fast with that Yates Power) and you just didnt get to a points reset at the last race of the season and "hey fellas fastest car wins" I dont agree with it, I've hated it since 04 but I will say if someone said I could go to the Homestead Miami Bowl presented by Ford I'd go in a second because I love racing and Miami is a bucket list track for me personally.

So from what I understand Ryan Newman is the People's Champ on this board for this 10 weeks of Playoff Implications?

one thing about Newman, any of his competitors shows their flank and he could take them out. There is always that thought when Newman is on the track. He did it to Larson and he did it to Matt D.

It's pretty sad but just don't see a Chevy making the final 4 again for the 3rd year in a row. Hell, I'd consider it a win if more than 1 bowtie even makes it to the final 8.

This is a good post. It's really difficult for a reasonable person to argue convincingly that what we have is not a reasonable way to accomplish the task of awarding a championship. Is it the ONLY reasonable way? Of course not! Only a stubborn and narrow minded person would claim that there is just one good way to skin a cat. That is proven by a quick survey of the sports world. There is an amazing and very broad array of procedures used by various sports to name their annual champion. It is compelling evidence that there is more than one way to skin a cat.

The current system focuses too much on the losers. Who is on the bubble, who is in the final Playoff spot, who are the first four eliminated, who are the next four eliminated. Ryan Newman can go bag leaves, I don't care a whit about him advancing or even being on the track. He'd be a third-page story in the old system and that's where he belongs. I preferred a system where a leader was established and the rest of the field focused on trying to knock him off the top of the mountain. Occasionally, you had a down year where a guy like Kenseth could cruise and win a title. That was the exception to the rule. What happens at the top doesn't even matter anymore until the final race. That 's my biggest point of contention with the Chase/Playoff system, that and it's too bloated. 10 weeks to determine a champion is an awful long time compared to March Madness, NFL, MLB, or NBA playoffs which last around one month. Give me fewer cars and races and I might be more invested.

I agree. This is the biggest gripe I have with the current system. The early renditions of the Chase, with the 10-race miniseason, always seemed to have two (occasionally three) heavyweight contenders emerge to battle at the front... Stewart v. Edwards or Johnson v. Keselowski or Johnson v. Kenseth, etc. That doesn't happen with the current elimination style format.

I don’t like that four can win it. Honestly wish it were just 3 that could nab the W but the Homestead Bowl is pretty cool. I’ll admit Truex vs Busch a few years ago was unreal

Oh! Couldn't remember if it was cause of something else!

I'm calling BS on every race feeling like a playoff race back then. I tired of the sport and quit following it in the mid to late 90's and didnt come back until around 2010 or so. Of course this is meaningless anecdotal but I know lots of friends and friends of friends in my area who were huge nascar fans back then and don't follow the sport at all these days. Sad too because it's way better now than it was then. Of course that is just my opinion. But I dont take naps in the middle of a race anymore. No-one wins the championship with several races left on the schedule. And I dont see guys laying around in the back of the field until the last 50 laps anymore either. That didn't work so well for Matt Kenseth the first year we had stage racing. By the time he and others figured out they needed to be racing hard every lap all race long it was too late the season was already gone and they had left too many points on the table already. Yep stage racing is way better. The old ways are gone. Things have evolved. For the better.

I'm actually excited about the Vegas race tonight and I always hated Vegas for being a boring race. I don't think it will be tonight and I'm stoked that Stewart-Haas is the front 4. What really has me stoked though is Talladega is almost here and I cant fricken wait for that!!!

I can only speak for myself, but every race did feel like a play off to me. I never missed a race, even Talladega and Daytona which I don't care for at all. Reason being that all those big wrecks had actual championship implications. Every position mattered, not just the race winner.
With that said, I do think that the stages would have been a great asset to a full season championship battle. Stage racing and points that carry through have made the new championship format slightly less of a lottery but I'd still love to see stage racing with a 36 race champ.

I like wrecks and I like drafting. When plate racing first came about I hated it but I grew to like it. What do you mean about a 36 race champion? That's pretty much what we have. These 16 racers today were the best points racers 26 races to this point. Now they will battle it out to see who takes everything.

No. Kyle Busch in 2015 was a 25 race champion. Joey Logano last year was a Homestead Bowl champion. Jimmie in 2016 too.

Wrong... Kyle did exactly what he had to do to win a championship. No-one else was championship caliber to challenge him. No-one. Same goes for Joey and Jimmie too. They did what they had to do and they are champions of the sport.

Listen when I say that no-one ever asks or cares "who lead the most laps?". The only thing that matters is winning. And winning championships. I'm sorry it hurts your feelings that a driver can beat the world all season long but when it really matters they end up choking and you go off on a tangent about the past.

If you're not a winner when it counts you're not going to win a championship (except for when Ryan Newman almost...) hahahaha!!!

That’s your opinion. I prefer the old way but that’s just me. To each his own

For Kyle to do what he did in only 25 races? That was very impressive. I can't stand Kyle Busch but even I would be hard pressed to argue that he isn't the best driver out there week in and week out and he's the one to beat.... but not really a champion??? No doubt a hall of famer and one of the best drivers ever. He'll win more championships for sure. Bunch of losers couldn't outpoint him and they had 11 more races to do it in??? That's how good he is. Ohh, only because he won homestead? Wtf didnt the other possible champions bring their best to the championship race finale? I mean everyone knew it was all or nothing for the last 4 best drivers...

You say his opinion is the minority, but it may not be. 20 years from now, it DEFINITELY won't be the minority.

I’m only 34 and I would bet there’s more that think like me who are in this age bracket. I wouldn’t consider it a slam dunk that we’ll be in the minority either, might be around for a long time. But really who cares, we had an excellent race yesterday and looking forward to Richmond this week. Regardless of what we think of this points system I would hope we can agree the racing yesterday was stellar and are anticipating the last 9 races here
