Xfinity RACE thread -- Indy

Byron himself had said he wants one more year in Xfinity before he thinks about moving to Cup.
Someone else posted that Byron said that, perhaps @Kiante or maybe not, but I wonder when or where Byron said that? I haven't heard it, which of course doesn't prove anything. But I'm curious why such remarks have not be reported widely in the gaggle of silly season articles published recently.

I think it's safe to say we just saw the birth of a completely new type of NASCAR racing. Put this package on the cup cars at indy and pocono next year.
I suspect you are right, although I think Pocono is just fine as it is. Today was pretty interesting, it was exciting, and it was better than we have seen at Indy, IMO.

I've made my peace with plate racing in the last few years, as passing has become more difficult and thus more meaningful. It's not my favorite style of racing, but I don't hate it the way I used to when cars could zip from the back to the front any old time they got a push. When there are 88 passes for the lead, that tells me passing is too easy, and thus each pass is meaningless except for the last one. This race didn't have that, and I liked what I saw pretty well. I'd rate it 7/10.

The only reason they run single file at Indy, is because the turns are sharper, and flatter, and not nearly as wide as Daytona. They can't go three, or four, wide on that track in the turns. (Byron did the three wide, around Bush, and Logano, and made it stick. That's an exception) Coming out of the corners you stay behind a car, until you have enough momentum to pass. That's why they aren't side by side in the corners, and down the straights, like they are at Daytona.

Best Xfinity race at IMS yet but I hesitate to say this should be the way of the future for NASCAR. I'm not sure flat and flat slow is a good look. There needs to be a healthy balance between quality of competition and test of skill and I'm not sure that was it. Open up the engine and make for more driving inputs. The ducts were the biggest difference-maker anyways. But I think it was a generally positive project and I think at least part of it will be implemented for Cup at IMS in 2018. It was good that it wasn't impossible to pass a car that had clean air, but also not impossible to defend as the leader.

This has been and always will be the case with fans of major sports. I lived as a hardcore sports fan for decades and while there were times when it was exhilerating most of that time was spent being annoyed by some petty BS. I much prefer my status as a knoweldgeable casual who just wants to relax and enjoy whatever sport is on.

*There is an exception to this. My son is a diehard Packers fan. He's as obnoxious as I was at his age and he gives me hell when his Packers play my Lions. During those games I allow myself to go all in. I yell at the TV, I curse out the refs, I bust out my colorful language and do so in a loud manner. No regrets.

It didn't really look all that slow to me until I watched Cup qualifying.

I am hoping that enough fans heard about yesterday's race that it inspires them to take a look at next year's.

Should be really easy for them to get more speed for next year. Not a bad shot at it for a base line though. That seems to be some of the drivers thoughts about what would make it even better. Too much speed and they would get back to single file follow the leader and back to being almost impossible to pass.
