2016 Talladega - Alabama 500 - Pre Race Thread

I dunno, I think the 3 can run well enough to get near the front and have a shot at it, but not go out and dominate to win the race. He still has a pretty good shot to advance though as he could very well beat the 22. Still, I think the absolute fastest single cars at plate races this year have been Amelia and the 24 clone of it. It would be something if they brought back that design instead of what they used last at Daytona.

The Toyoda's have been fast too but only when they could all get grouped up and move to the front together. Individually I don't see them contending except for maybe the 18.

Brad may be considered the best plate racer right now and I'll sure be pulling for him, but I think a lot of it is due to his spotter Joey Meier. Together they are damn near unassailable once they get out front and start blocking. The trouble is Brad has needed help from his teammate many times on restarts and the 22 has been there to bail him out (Daytona), but what I've been hearing lately is that Penske will be splitting strategies and one of them will be riding around at the back.

Wednesday already and not one call to knock down the banking or banish it from the Chase. Where the heck is everyone?
The "knock down the banking" is my favorite one ppl drag out each year. I'm with you, can't wait till Sunday, the next 2 weeks are the best part of the Chase.

The 10 team has as good a chance as any this weekend.
Almost time. One of my favorite racetracks on the schedule followed by my absolute favorite.

Yeah, there's little in NASCAR I would enjoy seeing more than the sun setting on Talladega. :p

@ASManess OH GOD WHY IS RYAN REED ATTEMPTING A CUP RACE

Crying laughing right now at that tweet.

Think its really fair to say Scott is a bad driver? I still don't believe as RPM has been complete hot gar-bage this season, I just don't understand why they just did not continue buying Roush chassis? Hell, they at least had some top 10 finishes.

from jayski.....

Career start 150 for Patrick: The Alabama 500 will mark #10-Danica Patrick's 150th career start in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and her eighth at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway. She finished a career-best 19th there in October 2014. In two NASCAR Xfinity Series starts there, she finished a career-best 13th in May 2012.

You must have missed it. I know I posted my obligatory rant earlier in the week.

Found it. See my post #24.

You're welcome!
You made me look. I don't think you had your heart in the argument that day. Maybe you're warming up to restrictor plate racing @ Talladega. ;)

Interesting side note unrelated to Taladega hate/dislike.....

Did you know that Talladega is actually pronounced Talladeega and not Talladayga? I didn't know this until yesterday.

You'll have to click on the link and once there, the link they have to the pronunciation.

from Wikipedia:

"The name Talladega is derived from a Muscogee (Creek) Native American word Tvlvteke, from the Creek tålwa, meaning "town", and åtigi, meaning "border" – indicating its location on the boundary between the lands of the Creek tribe and those of the Cherokee and Chickasaw. While the town's name is pronounced /ˌtæləˈdɪɡə/ by local inhabitants, the racetrack's name is pronounced /ˌtæləˈdeɪɡə/ by auto racing fans."

who woulda thunk it . . .

Notes: Teams in both the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Camping World Truck Series will run the same tire set-up at Talladega this weekend . . .

. . . for Sprint Cup teams at Talladega, this combination of left- and right-side tires dates back to the October 2014 race . . .

. . . for Camping World Truck teams at Talladega, they began running this left-side tire code (D-4596) in 2014, and this right-side tire code (D-4630) in 2015 . . .

. . . teams in both of these series have also run this left-side tire at Daytona this season . . . this is the only track at which these teams ran this right-side tire this year . . .

. . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Talladega . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.

Tijuana and Juarez are border towns too. :D

Check with your health care plan; see if they'll let you get off the generics and go back to the name brand meds.

Not much sense in warming to the topic. Everyone knows how I feel about plate racing and has heard the reasons why.

Team orders in play for Chase cut-off race at Talladega

When it comes to support staff, Kurt Busch will have one hell of a wingman on his side this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway.

Tony Stewart has signed up to assist his teammate in whatever capacity it takes for Busch to transfer the second Stewart-Haas Racing Chevy into the Round of 8 of the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

“All I care about is Kurt,” Stewart said. “That’s the only one I care about this weekend.”

Not around my house.

Is that supposed to be Zeus with the lightning bolt?
Nope --- I bet it's Vulcan. There's a statue in Birmingham of Vulcan. It has to do with the iron industry that once was in Birmingham.

Vulcan forged the lightning bolts for Zeus.

Just checked --- it is a copy of the statue in Birmingham.

It just doesn’t compare to the awesomeness of the trophy awarded the winner of the most recent cup event in Chicago.

Thank you! It certainly is different.

its sad the crew members loook. Back in the day the crew looked excited to fix the cars.

They look that way because their tire pressure gauges can't read past 50 psi.
