The real championship thread

even lil jeffie is on board w/ new chase format ........sunday post race win interview. ???

Well it just sounds so much like "Man, our government isn't the real government. It's just a puppet government being propped up by the Illuminati!"

Let's face facts here, honestly if we want to get down to the nuts and bolts, every championship is made up. Why? Because honestly the whole points system is arbitrary made up. When Bill France Sr. started NASCAR, he didn't really have anything to go on, so he just said "Okay, first place gets x amount of points, second place X amount of points, etc." He could have said, "Okay first place gets 500 bananas, second place gets 400 bananas, etc." and it would still be the same thing.

Before every season of racing begins, every driver is told what the rules are, and they all agree to the rules. They didn't have to, no one is forcing them to, but here we are. The Champion of 2014 will be a real Champion, just like every other Champion since 2004 when The Chase began. Including Jimmie Johnson's Six Pack.

Oh please..nobody listens to the facts around here, it was real racing before the chase, men were men back then, points were real and so was Santa Claus.

Lol what do you expect him to say?

accordin ta you wizards ......." if we didn't have this crappy chase format ....i'd be leadin jr in points .....
................1022 ta 978.......brad would be 3rd w/ only 958 ! "

????

Whiners and complainers will always do what they do best. Look at just about any sport and over the years and in some cases thousands of year have changed dramatically. It's never easy to get out of ones comfort zone and having to learn new rules can confuse those of simple minds.

NASCAR was slipping in ratings even before the "chase" came to be
I think some people just believe it's a terrible method of crowning a champion.

NASCAR was slipping in ratings even before the chase was instituted, I'm not saying it's the answer but something had to be done to attract new fans. With the amount of commercials and the long cautions folks lose interest and switch channels. I don't know how many times folks have told me that the last 50 laps is all that are worth watching. I don't know what they can do, it's not really a made for TV sport to get the full impact of a race. Kind of like watching hockey on TV it just isn't the same.

and some will always try to make auto racing a popularity contest..like it isn't worth watching unless everybody watches. So the ratings deal is always the all important gauge in their minds, but when Nascar tries to do something different to make the races more interesting for the fringe fans, the same people scream and moan. Notice it doesn't matter a whole lot to most racing fans, if the gimmick puts more butts in the seats or increases the ratings great, if it doesn't they aren't going anywhere. Unlike stick n ball, racing is so much more complicated and has to change, as technology, different motors, tires, handling packages and cars in general are developed and tested. The rules are constantly changing to hopefully keep the cost down and the racing as fair and even as possible. The racing community has a much smaller group of people who follow the sport. Nascar has a huge piece of the group world wide. Besides the U.S. they are in South America and also overseas in Europe, they own the new IMSA Tudor series now also. So when the doomsayers say that Nascar is dieing, there are plenty of fools for company, but I am not one of them.

NASCAR's ratings were at all-time highs right around the implementation of the Chase, although the opposite is usually cited as for why it was "needed". I think more than anything it was done out of arrogance. I have to say I agree with everything else you said. It sucks that ESPN's management doesn't care about NASCAR because their NASCAR team actually does a very good job with broadcasts (NonStop is much-needed and brilliantly used). And the live experience really does blow that of pretty much all other sports straight out of the water.

It's different because most aspects of NASCAR depend on viewership and attendance more than most other sports do - if the fans aren't at the track the venue can't pay the sanctioning fees and we end up losing interesting circuits; if the TV viewers aren't there the sponsors head out the door and the field starts to dwindle because talent can't get financial backing and teams have to close up shop, etc.

So you should also know how poorly they've managed that series in not even a full year of competition.

Wouldn't higher unemployment correlate to people being at home and thus able to watch? The number of Americans with cable didn't drop. The economy could explain lower track attendance but lower TV ratings would be another story.

I'd venture to say the spike in 2001 was in part due to Dale Earnhardt's death sad but true then held level. Looks like it has dropped any further than it was prior to that incident.

The economy excuse works for attendance, but not so much for TV ratings. And the economy in the US didn't really tank until 2008, NASCAR's ratings decline started several years before. There is something else that started in 2004 that could have contributed to the decline though.....

Just want to throw this out there...

How is it that NASCAR survived for over 50 years before this big spike in attendance and ratings? and why is it that everyone thinks the sport constantly needs to live up to the ratings from around that time? The sport is not going anywhere.

Also.... You guys do realize the internet also contributes probably millions of dollars one way or another annually into this sport.. don't you?

Attendance and TV ratings are not the only things bringing money to the sport, and we are ALL living proof of how the internet has affected the sport. Where did you all talk about NASCAR in 1999? I can't be the first person that realizes the internet has taken over the world over the past 10 years. Why do TV ratings attendance matter that much when people are paying more for live streams or in car videos and scanners feeds directly from their desks at home?

I'd be willing to bet the internet makes nearly as much if not more for the sport now than TV did 20 years ago.

AKA Brad didn't win so I must complain. :p

Have you been under a rock for the past year and a half?

Harvick is racing under some kind of black magic spell gone wrong. Fast, fast, fast...kaput. A freaking lug nut takes off a valve stem. What next?

Some people accept change, some don't. We also don't know what ratings may have been had The Chase not been introduced. Maybe they would have tanked completely. I suspect that it doesn't matter. Most of the real race fans just want to watch the race.

If that's food for thought, I'm starving!

I gotta wonder if all of those that are so against this new Chase system aren't going to celebrate when their driver takes home the hardware after Homestead. If it's Jimmie's seventh, does it count? How about Kyle's first? Kes's second? Or, do we use the current point structure applied to the pre Chase era? Is that the real champion?

As I have said before, I won't care about this championship regardless of who wins, including our boy Junior. In my mind, if Jimmie wins, he'll be a six time champion and a one time Homestead Bowl winner. Just like some people look at Jimmie's six Chase championships differently than pre-Chase championships, I consider this year's championship to be different (and less significant) than the championships that have come before it.

I do suspect that some of the people on my side will change their minds and hop on the new Chase bandwagon at the end of the year, but I won't be one of them.

A champion is a champion because the rules and the trophy say he is.
I don't care who wins it this time, like em or not, they'll be the champion and that will still go in the record books and mean something.
If you can survive this crazy system and bring it home at the end, you deserve it.
