Big changes coming

The playoff crap is what's killing the sport for me. I quit watching Chase races two years ago, I don't watch plate races, I don't watch qualifying anymore, I probably watched less than half of the races last year.
I'm interested to see what attendance and ratings will be in 2017.
To be brutally honest..... it has been quite a few years since I have watched an entire race on T.V. ... My oldest son has been a Nascar fan since he was probably 4 years old.. he is 32 now........ he can tell you stats back to the 90's...... but..... anymore he's a bigger NFL fan.... He loves the plate races so he's always over to watch them....... we always watch the end of 'em together but..... in between I'm usually in the garage cooking hotwings or grilling.......

The ''Chase'' ....... I agree wholeheartedley...... biggest bunch of Crap ever concieved....... especially this last race deal at Homestead..... ''highest finisher wins it all''......

I doubt the P.T. Barnum/ Humpy Wheeler extravaganza super show that's on the agenda this year is gonna' boost the viewership very much...... as least not like they are expecting.... it won't change mine anyway..... I'll still be in the garage cooking hotwings ... grilling.... or shopping with the wife or playing football with the grandson..... they have left me behind.....

And there will be a few posters say.... ''Then just leave and don't let the screen door hit you in the ass''''' ,.....

You don't even think knockout qualifying is more fun to watch than just single car runs?

I despise knockout qualifying. Absolutely hate it with a passion.

Single car runs were MUCH more fun to watch. Every driver/team/sponsor gets the spotlight on them for a couple minutes where they are the focal point. You run your two laps and you're done, that's all you got, and that's all that was necessary. I liked watching the tracker to see how they stacked up against the leader. Now it's a glorified practice where the same guys are almost always in the top 12. Three rounds for qualifying? Dumb. Go out there, run your fastest lap, shut it down. No need for the multiple round knockout BS.

It sucks that I can only "like" this post once.

Different strokes for different folks. I am glad some of you enjoy it.

Of all the changes they have made over the years that I don't care for, I can at least stomach most of them. Knockout qualifying is the one that bothers me the most. I don't even watch qualifying anymore.

Neither I just like the knockout qualifying. The changes never bother me though because they still line up bad ass cars and race them every weekend.
Let me put it like this.

I love racing. I love the high intensity situations it creates.

I abhor manufactured drama. Which is exactly what the points system & segemented race is. It creates unnecessary "moments" that arent genuine. Its WWE level trash.

If you know what lap the yellow is coming out its not fair you won't pit and you will be leading

I prefer knock out qualifying. The drama that it occasionally produces is natural, not manufactured. But this is a small thing.

I will forever be opposed to a ridiculously flat points system that grossly under-rewards winning and often leads to boring points racing for the final third of the season. This is paramount.

Arguing that the world should be like it was when we were children is a waste of time and energy.

No the whole race, no. Who gives a sh!t about being the leader on lap 60 if there's no reason to be? Hence why when a faster car comes up behind the leader the leader usually just lets the faster car on by and picks his battles. You won't really see that anymore. It'll be a fight through the whole race now, not just the last 15 laps.
If they didn't have the lucky dog, and wave arounds, then guys would try hard not to go down a lap. These drivers are trying as hard as they can every lap, with the exception of plate races. If you don't think they are, you know nothing about racing. When I was racing, it was the dream of most drivers, to lap the rest of the field. With things the way they are now, it will never happen. So I have to ask you, have you ever been a driver, or part of a pit crew? Your understanding of what makes good racing, leads me to believe you haven't. I'm not trying to put you down, just trying to point out that what you like, is in complete contrast to every person I know, that are fans of racing. More than anything else, I think this demonstrates why NASCAR needs to have a fan of racing, to be the person that makes the racing decisions. I don't know of any sport where the commissioner, or CEO, is not a fan of their sport. This makes it painfully obvious that Brian France needs to go.

Apparently I'm the only one who doesn't much care how they qualify. Two laps, three rounds, owner points, random draw; as long as qualifying itself doesn't award points, it doesn't much matter to me. I will say that for fantasy purposes, the three round approach is a better indicator of short term performance.

We'll have to see if the new rule about starting on the qualifying tires has on race and Q strategy. For four of the races, the only benefit to qualifying well is pit stall choice.

Speaking of qualifying, did I hear correctly that Hamlin didn't qualify outside the top 10 one single time last year and had an average starting position of 6th? If that's true that's the most impressive thing that happened last year, screw #7.

What he did with that prime starting position is pretty bad though.

Yep, he had the best avg. starting position in the entire field. I had to look it up but he had the 5th best average finish. That's not bad at all but in today's Chase format, being one of the best means very little. You just have to be good at the most opportune time. Our current champ was 10th best overall but these days that kind of average can grab a championship. Now, I'm just sad. :(

When they first announced the current for of qualifying, I jumped on board that wagon. It didn't take too many weekends into the process for me to change my opinion. It grew old quick. Especially when the fastest cars weren't winning the pole position.

I'm still a fan of the single car qualifying along with the 'ghost car' as a lap comparison. Sure, we aren't going back there but that was, by far, the right method of qualifying. It guaranteed that the deserving, fastest car started on the pole like it should.

I enjoy drama and mystery a lot in the realm of movies and plays as they have license to take liberties with events and realism but I don't care for manufactured drama in sports or racing.

I was watching a hockey game last night and was thrilled to see some dramatic plays by the guys on the ice that came about as a natural extension of the game itself. No one decided that points needed to be awarded at various stages of the game, no one decided that one team was too far ahead of the other so measures needed to be taken in order to close the gap and none of the websites I have visited featured any fans in any uproar about the game. It was great.

I love NASCAR pre 2004.

I hate what NASCAR has become. A gimmick ridden business that is pushing away it's core audience in an atrempt to stay trendy with the young folks. The heads at the table care more about revenue than the product. Its asanine, ludicrous, & abhorent.
But that is the same idea Bill France Sr. had when he organized racing and built Daytona and many other tracks. The same idea that the Wriggling Bros had when they started the Big Top circus. They just used elephants instead of cars.

Given a choice between (a) an elimination style playoff that ignores regular season performance, and (b) an elimination style playoff that features a sizable reward for regular season excellence... I'll choose (b) in a heart beat. That is the crux of this deal.

Nailed it.

Just curious, but what would you have against awarding points for pole position?
Qualifying is to determine where you start. I see it as a minor step in competing, not a goal in itself. I think starting position and choice of pit stall is reward enough for being fastest for just one or three laps.

I think the elimination style playoff is a major contributor to the continued decline in overall popularity of the sport.

I'm simply going by the facts. Expand your mind to include facts. Since the Chase and the playoff formats the sport has been consistently tanking.

I didn't type that to You but thanks for your input.

At this point in time, no one actually knows the reason or reasons for the shrinkage. They are all guessing as do we. The TV viewership is down yet real race fans have so many options for watching the races there is no reason not to. I'm with Skoal, I record every race and start watching 1 hour into it so that I can fast forward commercials and red flags. It also allows me to mute the Waltrip's.
I don't attend races (Canadian) because of the cost factors and partly because I am to old to deal with the crowds. Early 90's was different and it would cost me $3,000. to go to Daytona. Pension doesn't allow that these days.

EDIT: I envy those that have the options and abilities to attend live racing.

Can you just find another sport or hobby to occupy your time that you actuallyel would enjoy? It honestly seems really unhealthy that you post here many times per day just to bitch about everything. That's not a way to be happy. Move on and find something that fulfills you, because clearly NASCAR no longer does.
This is a discussion forum. If you can't handle opposing views then I suggest you talk to yourself.
