Cable cutters, rejoice

I tried CBS All Access this past fall when Dish Network was in contract negotiations with CBS over pricing. Conveniently, Dish Network dropped CBS locally from our channel lineup during the middle of the NFL season while the negotiations took place. While I appreciated CBS All Access for being a quick/cheap remedy for watching the Steelers games, I found little else that I watch off of CBS.

At least you got to watch that thrilling AFC Divisional Playoff ;)

Nope, we ain't going back there.

I was browsing some video's about streaming and different devices and came across a video about this device for streaming.....

more detailed info here.....

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/shield/

Just curious if anyone here is using this? Looks like a great device. I'm not interested in the gaming aspect, only the streaming. How good is it? I'm currently using both the Roku and FireTV/Firestick devices and find that they work well. They're cheaper than this NVIDIA SHIELD. I just wondered what would make it better than other devices? Is it worth it to upgrade?

How is it working for you? Just curious if you're getting comfortable with the decision or if you hate that you did it.

I just entered my 2nd month of Vue and Set TV. Going strong. Getting used to the change. Been able to get every game that I've wanted to watch.

Some quick things that I've learned.....

Vue. Vue has DVR capabilities. I've been using it for NASCAR & other television shows. When you add a show/sporting event to your 'List' in Vue, you can go back at any time and choose to watch the show with PAUSE/FF/RW capabilities. If you forget to add a show to your 'List', it is still available in the On Demand section. However, if you watch a show from the On Demand section, you cannot FF past commercial's. Not really a big deal. You simply add it to your 'List' and you don't have that limitation.

Vue. Absolutely no buffering or pixelation issues whatsoever. Full HD with the quality not being a concern.

SetTV. I'm using this mainly for sports but all cable channels are on there as well. Every single sporting event is on there. I'd recommend this for any avid sports fan out there.

SetTV. There are no DVR storage capabilities that I've found. You can PAUSE/REWIND and FF live events that you previously PAUSED.

SetTV. DVR not necessary. Chances are, whatever it is that you watch, it can be found with the search option. Not only is the most recent show found, the entire series is available. I've found this to be true for everything that I've searched for to date.

SetTV. Absolutely no buffering or pixelation issues whatsoever. Full HD with the quality not being a concern.

If anyone's got any specific questions that you'd rather not post on here, feel free to PM me and I'll answer whatever questions you have about these services. Otherwise, post it here and I'll see it.

OK, after looking into this Set TV, I think I'm finally ready to cut cable. :D

I hope you enjoy it as much as we do. You’ll save yourself a boatload of $’s.

What devices are you running it on? I have one Fire Stick, but I would want to get a couple more for the other two TV's. That "set top box" they offer looks great, but it's sold out at the moment

Fire stick or the Fire TV. I'm running both. Easy to load. Online in minutes.

@dpkimmel2001 It's not cable but I just cancelled my sirius xm radio contract and it was a nightmare. When I bought our new Ram in 2014 we got a free years subscription. I renewed the following two years with a credit card but declined the auto-pay option. I received an email yesterday that they were going to charge $328.18 to my credit card to renew my contract. I called and after I finally got someone they argued with me for over 15 minutes wanting me to renew, total time over 20 minutes on the phone. When I was adamant about cancelling the line was "accidentally" disconnected. I called back and went through the same crap again but this time I told her about being disconnected and if it happened again I would turn it over to my credit card company. She finally cancelled the service and I received a $21.03 refund for the remaining time on my contract. This time according to my phone I was on there for 33 minutes. And yes she spoke broken English with an Asian accent.

I don't remember how much time I spent on the phone with them but I sure hear ya. You'll slowly find that you can do without sat radio. I had it for a long long time. I thought I couldn't live without it but I was wrong. I seldom give it a thought any longer unless its mentioned on here. All of the races are available for free via MRN/PRN, be it over the air or online or an app on your phone, (maybe not your archaic device). ;) As far as the shows go, you'll soon find a source of frustration is a thing of the past.

I never listened to the Nascar channel just Willies Roadhouse which I can do without.

Pandora could be your new, free, friend then. Tons of stuff on there that you'd find to be a welcomed switch. We are big into music. Pandora is streaming almost constantly around my house daily.

I remember that experience myself. When I bought a new car, it came with Sirius XM free for a year, except it was only free for three months. Anyway, I kept it because I liked NASCAR Radio and the music channels. But I tried cancelling it and even did cancel it. Two months later, accidentally turned it on and it was still activated. It was a nightmare to keep trying to cancel it. I think I ended up having to basically not pay it and have it cut off because they refused to cancel it.

Thank goodness for streaming services like iHeartRadio and unlimited data. I just use those now.

Some time ago I caught a news story about my smart TV, the company was fined for a privacy violation. I decided to turn off its wifi connection when the TV got an update and I couldn't find out anything about the update. Now I have a Roku box and what concerns me is that it does not have an off switch, the remote has an off button but it only turns the TV off. I've looked at the Roku privacy document and it is pretty much the same as all apps - they can monitor what you do with their box and they will share the info with third parties. I don't normally read user agreements or privacy documents but I thought I'd see what some of my stuff is doing.

Yeah, the last time I tried cancelling they dropped the price three times during the call. I truly called with the intention of cancelling, but they lowered the last offer to the point of where it was basically free so I kept it.

Satellite radio is pretty nice. But with streaming media now, you can get almost everything satellite offers. I can get 90s stations on Pandora and iHeart. I can listen to MSNBC on the NBC News app. My beast of a phone even has an FM Radio built in.

I don't mind FM Radio but the radio in the truck doesn't work so I just have a speaker in it. I'd replace the radio but I'm getting a new car very soon because gas prices are too high to keep driving a pickup truck across the coast.

i suspect most TVs that come out from now on will be like this.
I got my smart TV a few years ago and they included a small selection of online channels. I got a Roku box to expand my selections. I'd prefer a dumb TV, I just want a big monitor. I run the cable box and Roku box through my receiver. I prefer a component system so I can update just the functions/boxes as needed (and choose my component vendors). I don't like the idea of TVs manufacturers choosing who my providers are. There will probably be a new market for unlocked TVs.

I wouldn't think future tvs would be limited, just add on and choose.

I think as long as you have a HDMI port to spare, you can continue to use whomever you want as your provider. I purchased a Roku tv for my son a little over a year ago. We've had Dish Network and an Amazon Fire stick hooked up to it at various times with no difficultly.

For any of you that switched to SetTV, I've found that if you let your subscription expire by a day or two they'll email you a discount code. I've got one for 20% and more recently 10%. That will cut your monthly amount to $16 - $18. This month I'm paying $18. Awesome compared to the $150+ that I was paying Dish Network.

Hmmm cool...so far I think this is very good how about you? I've had no problems.

I finally got Set TV. Very impressed. The interface is extremely smooth, simple, and fast. Picture quality is great, no difference from cable. I've had zero issues with lag or buffering. It looks/feels exactly like cable/satellite for a fraction of the cost. Awesome

If you're a sports fan like me, you got yourself one helluva deal. Glad to read you're enjoying it.

Tons of sports and movies, I'm just hoping this kind of deal continues and Big Cable doesn't somehow put the whammy on it.
It could certainly happen at some point. There are plenty of other options out there in addition to this one though. All within the $20-$30 range.

So I’ve noticed my cable box rebooting several times a day for the past few days while it was off. I just noticed today that I have a bunch of new channels including National Geographic channel. I wonder what’s up. I’ve been wanting Nat Geo for a long time but it wasn’t in my package. I’m curious what other new channels I have :)

Cable companies often give free previews in hopes that you will enjoy the channels and upgrade your package. When I had cable through a cable company, I never recall them actually adding new channels to my package. But then again, with all the streaming options out there...it's possible that cable companies will start adding new programming to their packages in an attempt to compete.
