The Rock has been bought

Bulldoze it. 1.5 mile tracks aren’t the problem IMO, it’s their shape which causes the issues. The whole D shaped tri-oval is the bigger issue as that kind of shape leads to more momentum and speed into corners which reduces the need for throttle control

That’s why the cars need to be more aero friendly to allow a draft for the cars behind them, similar what we see in the truck series. Same reason I don’t want the trucks to return to short tracks mostly, it’s the best racing series on 1.5+ length tracks

Slower and the aerodynamics of a brick with the trucks seem to work pretty well on the 1.5's

We used to call the rock D.U.I international! That’s why the fans stopped going! I say good riddance

Maybe the fans should have been more responsible and not driven while intoxicated. Kind of makes DUI stops uneventful if you aren't under the influence. Course some people aren't smart enough or responsible enough to understand that. (No, that isn't aimed at you. It is aimed at those that are dumb enough to get behind the wheel of a vehicle and drive drunk).

You mean people quit going because they didn't want to be around drunks, or because the drunks got tired of getting busted?

I find it difficult to believe Rockingham attracted more excessive imbibers on average than any other sports facility.

Hey it's worth a shot, and if some racing still happens that's way better then a housing development or a mall.
I hope they give it an honest to goodness shot and start off with modifieds, ARCA and other lower level series see how that works out then invite Trucks back and Xfinity with the hope of maybe getting a Cup race back in the very very distant future.

It's a good plan with entertainment in the form of concerts, car shows and various get together's, being out and away from the madding crowd is an advantage

I like their idea, turn the track into a multi use facility hope people there get out and support all that place will have to offer.

Was about to post the article but see snappy beat me to it

I think it's a realistic idea. The first ever Carolina rebellion festival was held in rockingham and was a hit, the drag strip always draws an awesome crowd.

I just wanna see cars on the track.

yeah a lot of the larger tracks have been having raves and concerts etc. If it is managed well, it sure is looking good for the Rock racing.

I think a lot of tracks are moving this direction. Dover has Firefly, Daytona has the country 500, Vegas has that crazy edm thing. I'm sure other tracks have stuff.

I hope the get some racing back out there. I honestly hope the track works out, the sport as a whole needs places like The Rock: a damn unique place that is steeped in history.

And close enough to my hunting camp I can get drunk as a skunk and walk to it!

Start small; see if they can get LeMons or ChumpCar to come back. They don't draw a crowd but those series don't require much overhead either. Might be a good way to knock the rust off, assuming they plan to do any racing and not use it strictly as an entertainment venue.

As much as I hope they bring it back, something just seems off here. Renaming it "Rock Entertainment Complex" seems like they're going to utilize the place's history as a landmark but intend to use it for other things not motorsports related. "Paying tribute to the past with the future". I think they're vaguely saying they intend to hold races there, but in the end it will be one of those things that just happened to not "work out".

You may be right, but the longer the track manages to survive without getting attacked by a bulldozer, the greater chance (no matter how small) that we could get to see racing there again. Just like historic preservation, you might not be able to save everything and restore it to it's former glory, but once it's gone, it's gone.

Well that was an interesting interview. He said he's been in talks with Nascar and other racing organizations and more info would be released on that in the coming months.

I was able to go to the last race at the Rock, had a great time, but, traffic out was pretty sucky. Sat in the middle of turn 1 and 2 half way up. The track was great but in the wrong location for lodging and such.

If it comes back fine, If it does not come back fine.

Not a bad idea to use music and entertainment as another means to keep the place going, but the racing certainly hasn't worked when Hillenburg owned it, why should it now?

A triple header or at least the cup series is what it's going to take imo

plenty of ways to make a living for that track besides a Nascar race, plenty of on going series besides Nascar can race there. having a multi purpose facility that draws different age groups with different interests is the way to go. Nascar's fees and safety and room considerations aren't cheap.

It's too big to host a weekly series, unless maybe it runs on the 'Little Rock' Martinsville clone (assuming it could attract a pool of regular competitors). Andy demonstrated it can't draw enough people to get by on regional touring series. It won't get a national series anytime soon. Sports car clubs can get more of a challenge at VIR or Kershaw. What's left?

I have no idea, but doing what other larger tracks do makes sense. It isn't a small track where big events won't work.

Speaking to SiriusXM NASCAR radio host Dave Moody on Friday night, Lovenheim said he intends to have the facility open every week for festivals, concerts and racing events.

In fact, he has already secured a 20-year contract to host the former Carolina Rebellion concert festival starting next May. That’s a major coup because the Carolina Rebellion has been the largest such event in the Carolinas.

Lovenheim hopes that by making The Rock a year-round entertainment facility, he will be better equipped to support occasional motorsport events.

"Our primary focus is on festival events and racing events," Lovenheim said. "We also have a whole host of events in many categories. We are encompassing a number of genres with the understanding that it's a flexible event complex space. Racing will be a fundamental part of this but it's not the only part we are relying on."

Hopefully The Rock doesn't get blown over next week before they get the chance to renovate it
