When will we have another multitime champion? Hampered legacies of Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick

I really think Joey is a better driver than everyone thinks. I put him up there with Kyle Busch.. only smarter. This is why we see him fall back like he does in races.. once the car won't give him what he wants he will only take what the car will give him. That is, until it matters.. then he is able to get that extra out of the car that we see guys like Kyle Busch get. He won three races this year.. one to get in the playoffs, one to get to the final four and then the big one for all the glory. He did only what he needed to when he needed to.

Would he rather have won every weekend? Of course.. but he didn't have the car for it. I really don't think he had the car to pull off that pass on Truex at Homestead but talent and pure determination willed that car to stick like no other could all night.

Best part of he may not even have reached his prime yet!

I do believe that Joey is better than people think. I do not believe that he is as good as Kyle Busch. Kyle is extremely smart. He takes what the car gives him but the difference is that he is screaming profanities while doing do. Do not allow this to cloud your judgment. Look at all of the top 5's & 10's. I am not trying to take anything away from what Joey did, but if there is a person in existence who didn't understand that Martin was done, they have no clue about this sport. I mean was Joey 2-4 tenths better on the short run? Probably. I am not trying to be a dick or anything--this is your moment, but take it easy---Joey is one year removed from not even winning. Success in this business is fleeting.

If I had my tinfoil hat on just so, I could say that Nascar turned their heads the other way to let ol Kyle with this broken ankles run a cheated up car all year to win the championship..what a story, what a comeback. Seems like a certain someone is trying to do the same thing with Harvick's season. ;):p For the record I don't believe either.
For you and @SlicedBread22
My comment about Kyle Busch "technically" being this year's champion was in reference to him apparently being number one under the normal points format.

I didn't see your post that way. There is an * besides Busch's championship for some..and the most brilliant come back in the world for others on the other end of the scale. I was having fun with the tin foilers that find a conspiracy in almost everything. That's why I said I don't believe either that Harvick got by with that spoiler all year or that Nascar looked the other way when inspecting Busch's car.

It has been that way for 14 years, every since they changed the points system. More often than not the champ wouldn't have won if using the traditional? (old) points system. On one of his interviews Stewart said he was thinking about replacing the old wood bleacher seats at Eldora with brand new aluminum ones. He said he got to thinking about all of the fans that had been sitting in the same numbered seat for 20 years and he changed his mind about replacing them. Stuff like that needs to be thought about.

I think he's as good as any driver out there. Always have. If you think that comment is bad you should have seen me in 2013.. and that was BEFORE he was a champion lol hell it was before he had 3 series wins
:lol2:

Joey Logano could easily be the next multi-time champion before Harvick or Busch. Would that really change fans opinions of the accomplishments of either Harvick or Busch? Would Logano winning a 2nd championship before the pair make Logano the premier driver of the three? Some would say so. For me, it shows just how much the value of a championship has been degraded by the current format.

Yeah. It's exciting from the entertainment perspective but it definitely feels watered down. Busch's championship soured me to this Homestead Bowl thing, Johnson's added to it and Logano's championship was the final straw.

Nope. A)Harvick didn't win the Championship, B) NASCAR nailed them. I mean, Rodney's excuse was that everybody else was doing it in Kansas. LOL. That's awesome. You have 2 tenths on the field, but you had to play along just because everybody else was doing it? ....and you did it just once? Sounds like a teenager caught with a joint. One of my favorite Rodneyisms. The other thing that you continually ignore is that this infraction (LOL) was dire. NASCAR was pissed. The last thing they wanted to do was to strip a contender of a win that would take him to the show....and jettison his crew chief. The body of work for the 4 is easily enough to say that what we saw was not what we should have been seeing. I mean two encumbered wins? C'mon man.

Naw, didn't say the comment was bad....just disagree. You know how we both roll...... I think that if you gave an owner the pick of the field, I don't think that Joey would be the first. Just don't. He would be up there, but not the first. I see him as Truex-like.....and I love Truex. I see Kyle Busch, Delana's wife, and Brad as the best in NASCAR right now. Joey probably leads the second tier--or maybe tier 1b with Martin.

you can make up any story ya want. But I think it is going to get worse for ya next year. The Yotas will have one less car than this year, and in a sport of numbers, the Fords recently have been expanding.

No question on the Manufacturers Championship front, WE will be in trouble. Really, only four cars able to fight. However, we will have all of those cute aero ducts to keep everybody bunched, so WE will win our share of races....I think....or we should....or that's the plan....Who knows though?....Matt D. could be the next Amirola......

Speaking of getting nailed? Although the wrath of Nascar did not come upon them, quiet as it has been kept the 18 car almost got lapped? Hard to be that bad. I would think something was changed, they fell off the map, and they got to keep their crew chief and weasel Joe got them the best pit stall.. And some who are saying waa they ran all race 1-4, I wonder what race they were watching?

They almost got lapped because they threw a Hail Mary. You know that. Car was bad. They were aggressive in their set up. It went the wrong way. When you are chasing an illegal spoiler, you do things. Had they known that the Cheating Bully had come back to earth, I wonder what that car might have been. Make no mistake, they were chasing the 4--they just didn't know how illegal it was. Martin was better because Cole Pearn is a genius. Joey reaped the rewards of all of this by having a consistent car with a consistent game plan. He had nothing to lose, and won it all. Rodney was the straw that stirred the drink....he just didn't realize where the straw would end up for him.

The spoiler blame angle. whatever works for ya man. Threw a hail Mary? is that another name for desperation? :D

How many young fans are they actually recruiting now compared to JJs earlier years? I think NASCAR is missing the mark in getting new fans interested enough to watch an entire season.
I do agree with that. Not defending NASCAR, this is just what i see happening

Back on topic, Making the final four is about the same as a multiple choice question. Sooner or later if you make it in with a one out of four chance of guessing the right answer, you are statistically assured of a win. As it is, if next year if the same four make it in there will be for sure a multi win champion crowned. Before next season with this points system, I can almost guarantee at least two of the same cars will be in the final four and probably three. Pretty predictable at this point and they haven't taken a green flag yet.

It took the Bread kid 11 years to win the championship, next year the competition will be tougher.

Yeah, it'll be harder to win multiple championships. It's hard enough to get there with the constant resets, but ultimately coming down to a winner-take-all race is the toughest part. As much as they aim to be like stick-and-ball, the only major professional sport in America that has a one-game championship is the NFL. MLB, NBA, NHL all have best-of-7 championship series that at least make it more likely that the better overall team wins the whole thing. It's much easier for some fluky, random outcomes to happen in a lone match.

I agree. I'm not a big fan of the current format as many. Imagine a driver pointing his way into the final race. Then finishing 2nd in the finale with the other 3 drivers finishing behind him. Highly unlikely but possible. So the driver wins the championship without winning a race all year while 2 other drivers won 8 races each during the year. How well would that go over with fans and how would Nascar handle the possible fallout as a result of those results?

It was 10 years.. that began when he was only 18 years old... has part of the competition.. if they're tougher he will be too.. I actually think this package will benefit Joey quite a bit

Me neither. Personally, I'd say with a title or with no title, Kyle's comeback in 2015 was mightily impressive. In less races, he still won more than anyone else.
Harvick was bad fast all year long, fluke spoiler or no fluke spoiler.

Kyle should have won because of the caution but had no car. A bad day blows the whole season

Well you got yours in 15 when it shouldn’t have happened, so now I think it’s fair to call him a Champion because he actually had a championship year. So be happy he actually has one.

Is it somehow a problem to follow the sanctioning body rules ?

I think people need to also realize but changing to a season-long point system is not going to bring fans back. There is going to be a point when this system is all NASCAR fans will know. Fans of the older system are going to age and move on. There's too much time in between, changing the system to a year-long based format will not do anything for the the sport, or the short attention span of today's modern society. Holding Out for an old school system is more nostalgic stubbornness than a legitimate solution at this point. It wont make Nascar better.

Im 26 and can hardly remember 2003 and its prior seasons. You think younger fans will? You also think future fans who were never exposed to the older system wouldnt get bored from NASCAR switching to a season long format wouldnt? Think again.

I just saw this....I’m not much older than you. I’m 33 so I remember the late 80’s somewhat but remember the 90’s and early 00’s real well. To say most of us won’t remember the old point system, not sure if I buy it if there’s more out there my age who wish we had a full season championship. I’m also not sure changing it back to a full season championship can’t not help, maybe it won’t in the long run. But NASCAR was humming along fine until all this postseason Chase stuff happened. It’s a shame we have to gear things toward people’s short attention span now, god forbid they have to take their eyes off their mobile device for more than 5 minutes.

Fair. I would love to see a debate on this topic between you and @Truex_rox. Not a stupid argument, but a true debate. I think this comparison is an interesting one. I am not sure that I don't disagree with you, but both drivers have really come from a couple of different angles to get where they are. Good stuff.

Why don't the local Nascar tracks across the nation have the Chase format?
