Bonehead Of The Race

Fans being upset that a racer made a racing move trying to win an exhibiton race

My only issue with it is it’s only a “racing move” when a select few guys do it. The double standards for who gets to run people over and who doesn’t never cease to amaze.

JJ side drafted Menard, it didn’t work out and it ended up as the 48 taking out the 21. He didn’t drive through the guy like Dillon/Almirola last year.

Don't see why it should. It has been happening since the first race was run. I don't think there has ever been much discussion when a couple of backmarkers tangle, except "get them off the track", or they shouldn't be in the race in the first place or cries for the earth mother Nascar to do something about it sniff sniff.

Looks like Johnson caused it, intentionally or unintentionally makes no difference now. But his mealy mouth explanation was sickening, suck it up buttercup, you screwed up.

Gordon making excuses was just as bad.
btw The 21 was sideways when the 48 passed him and the 48 went below the double yellow...where's nascar to enforce their rule???

I’m sorry you’re championing for Paul Menard. If you’re that upset over a guy who has one career win, and in the grand scheme of things is highly irrelevant on most race days then I really don’t know what to tell you. JJ is a pretty clean racer, more aggressive the last year or so sure because he hasn’t won. But that guy is one of the cleanest racers I’ve ever watched, of course he makes mistakes. They all do. Some more than others. Sucks for Paul it really does, but it’s an exhibition race that next week no one will even care about. The Clash isn’t a career defining race, the uproar over this entire JJ deal, I feel his detractors are just using to make a bigger issue of it than what it is.

I almost posted it before the race. But my first thoughts were when I saw Menard at the front. He will be in the wall before the day is out. He's a nice guy, but he isn't winning a restrictor plate race. That move never would have happened if Logano, or Kez, or Kyle, etc. you get my drift, were up front.

Sorry as wrong as it is I am guilty as charged as yelling for back markers to get off the damn track when they seem to wreck each other with 5 to go and change an entire race.

I’m not championing for anyone, I don’t give a **** about Paul Menard. The fact that he has one career win doesn’t justify him getting dumped for the win.

I’m just pointing out how everyone gets outraged when Dillon or Stenhouse cause a wreck, but Jimmie Johnson is immune from criticism because he’s a 7 time champ. A dump is a dump. Intentional or not.

And let’s not act like this is the first time JJ has done something like this on the plate tracks.

People here can’t seem to grasp that. He isn’t winning anywhere else either. Shame for the fella though

You didn’t ask me though if I thought it was a bad move. It was. It was a bit desperate, he messed up and here we are. Stenhouse last July was on a kamikaze mission. He wrecked anything that moved. Dillon I had zero problem with it’s the last lap of the biggest race of the year. All bets are off.

Eh they should use Menard as an example of what not to do when there is only one line and you see the car behind you getting a run. Hell if it was Jr, he would have run Johnson down to the grass to stay in front.

The 21 was shoving the 48 down the track. Jimmie had very little control of where his car was going at that point.

Fair enough. Low and behold I agree with you on all accounts.

In all honesty I don’t have an issue with what Jimmie did. It’s more the circling the wagons apology circuit by the FOX commentators yesterday and the 48 fans that annoyed me. If Gordon didn’t try to justify the move on national TV, and Jimmie wouldve just owned it afterwards, we wouldn’t be discussing it today.

It is what it is. Looking forward to the Duels.

Well, there is the difference between a dirty move, a stupid move, and a simple mistake. What Dillon did to Almirola might be classified as dirty by many as dirty. Stenhouse has been accused MANY times of making stupid moves. Johnson made a great move, but for whatever reason, either he misjudged or the air sucked the two cars together. Regardless, he should own it, but it's not exactly the same as the other two.

not sucking it up, not owning it and taking no prisoners is a good side to see that black hat Johnson is taking for some of us.

Jimmie balled up the field in a meaningless race. He sharply veered his car into Menard. Cars side drafted without crashing — this was Desperate Jimmie and he used his available bumper and energy to wreck (not move) Menard.

The new Desperate Jimmie is EXACTLY what NASCAR needs. It’s a good look and sets the tone for the entire season that separates NASCAR from other top race series. But Jimmie at the press conference trying to sell himself as a clean racer was just horrible.

Own It Jimmie!

You really think he meant to wreck him?

I must’ve watched that move a hundred times.

When I first saw Jimmie I was hoping he could do well just to keep that smug look off Chad’s face. But that move was about as deliberate as you’re going to find a dump in NASCAR.

Jimmie’s bumper lurched into Menard — not an aero wiggle. Then the field went pear shaped.

This was much more aggressive than the Logano rub — and it was just as aggressive as the Austin bump-n-wreck last year.

Jimmie raced dirty — and I’m OK with that. But PLEASE don’t insult the audience. Be honest like Dillon and get ready for retribution, because that will be the focus of a season built on keeping cars close, so contact is inevitable.

I gather you have not read the Rate the Race thread. I wouldn’t go near it if I were you
Why would I care what someone else thinks? You didnt watch it yet you are calling people boneheads who did. Do you let someone tell you what movie you watch, what food you should eat, what clothes you wear, what car you buy? You get the picture..........

There are two truths:

The Clash was crap.

Jimmie wrecked Menard on purpose, and it worked.

===

Everyone squinting their eyes looking for any hint of a Menard move were wasting their time — when “aggressive” Jimmie’s bumper lurched into Menard’s car for all the world to see.

When the sun is out this Sunday and we can run consecutive laps without a rain delay, we will see a different race. So yeah , the Clash never got in to a rhythm for me either and Jimmie Johnson absolutely was at fault on the deal with the 21

and Menard will be a mid packer where he belongs and not up trying to hunt with the big dogs.;) I swear some of them will be calling for Johnson to use his blinker next time.

Several people whose opinions I respect said the race was awful. Based upon that I felt comfortable issuing the bonehead award. You may disagree with that method and I am fine with it.

Perfect! At least you admit you let other people form your opinion lol

Oh Im sure Johnson probably wont see much of the 21 after Daytona, but he got his pound of flesh yesterday! ;)

yep the dual race will probably settle that deal. Happens a lot at plate races, the teams make a really fast car..after all Menard's was a Penske, but the driver has more car than they can handle in a place they normally aren't in. One of the funniest was when Danica won the Daytona pole. At least she got out of the way. Menard was stuck to the wall and over his head

Hahaha whatever he was.....this is a dead horse the 48 hit the 21 simple as that the 21 did not move and if he did it was way less then the 48 did!

Another comment that Jimmie made, they told him it was raining, so he said that could have made it the last lap of the race...and it did. I noticed with the sliding cars Kyle B in particular I think he was in the wet.

eh I have watched this a few times watching Menards fender in relation to the wall, I believe he came down a bit and that exaggerated the whole thing. I think the track was a mess also, I think moist would be the word about the track at least. It looks like Menard froze at the wheel after contact was made also, he didn't try to steer away.

freeze frame right before contact

Bone Head of the Race was Johnson's post race interview where he blamed the 21 for the wreck.

No, you just say it's a racing deal....never blame the leader after you wreck him.

The 21 was shoving the 48 down the track because he was out of control after being hit by the 48! Come on people, most of this is not very difficult. Honestly, I was SURE that the 48 would crash after going down below the line. I can't believe that car didn't go around.

Nobody but Johnson knows, but I think you're crazy if you think Jimmie wrecked him on purpose. I defy you to find another situation going all the way back to ASA in 1998 that Jimmie Johnson wrecked somebody on purpose. Wrecked some people? Yes. On purpose? Show me where. I don't think a 7 time champion with a two decade ultra clean record is suddenly going to decide to wreck somebody to win a meaningless exhibition event.

It was an awful display, not nearly as good as some of the past shows. Throw in the weather and the ending and it was even more awful.
