Really? At some point the tv audience will go to a race. Say they spend a couple grand to go to Daytona. Have plans to leave late Monday...which they think is covering them in case of a delay. After all, they normally start around 11 - 12 on Monday. They end up getting screwed. It takes fans to keep up tv revenue.

Yes really, I don't know what to tell you, the TV reach is much bigger than reach at the track, the bulk of the money comes from TV, its just how it is.

I am not defending it FYI, I would much rather have the race ran at Noon personally speaking.

The only way this race gets in tonight is if it is restarted after 11pm. Not so sure NASCAR will do that because I believe they have a 2am curfew for noise.

Then they'll have seen a rain delay before and will know it's a possibility.

Geez, y'all act like you didn't know it rains in Florida. Believe it or not, it can start raining any time of day, including 2:00 pm (or even earlier!). Weather happens, and only the NFL has enough pull to change start times. Even they can do it only because they have multiple games and the networks can switch to one of the others.

You might enjoy basketball or hockey or something else that's played indoors and is only affected by power outages. I'm told curling is very popular.

I get that...but to keep that revenue up you need hardcore fans. P off those hardcore fans enough then they stop being fans...just like we have seen the past 10 years and the huge decline in tv viewers and attendance.
 
Starting races earlier is a win/win in every situation. If it rains, they have longer to get the track ready before it’s too late. If it doesnt rain, the race is done early enough for most people to get back to their day and fans who attended have time to drive home. The only reason for later start times is money grabbing from ad revenue and it shows the sport relies on network contracts to survive rather than millions of fans spending money on tickets and merch.

Sadly if NASCAR had it’s head on straight, it wouldnt have to rely on the networks so heavily to begin with. Build it and they will come.

I really doubt a rain delay is going to piss of enough of the hard core fans to make an actual dent in the TV numbers.

I can see it hurting new comers though and turning them off .

For those of us who attend races earlier start times are always better. The science experiment that is the Pocono double-header weekend (no lights) is going to be interesting.....

I'm feeling the Dunkin/Target run coming. Adam Scott has golf in hand it appears...

You just listed the biggest sporting events in the world. Non fans of those sports always tune in to at least see whats going on and stay in the loop.

Not a single race in today’s NASCAR has that much popularity anymore.
 
No City is an entirely different team than United. Same city but different clubs. Think Clippers and Lakers

No sport survives any more on income generated directly from the fans. For good or ill, TV calls the shots for any sport that wants live coverage. If Big Bill was alive and trying to tell TV when the races would start, those of us not at the track would be watching NASCAR tape-delayed and edited-to-fit-the-time-frame on FS9. And forget Xfinity or Trucks.

If this race was scheduled for 1:00, it still could have started raining at 12:30. Or 11:00. Or 4:00 the day before.

But see, it didn't. First rains of the day came at 3:30.

Imagine, 3 and a half hours of racing before it first rained. Damn good chance this race is already over, even after that particular shower ended and we had ~30 minutes of further racing.

Let me try again. No fans = no tv revenue. As a fan who has attended many races over the years, I prefer earlier starts. I think when NASCAR was selling out the Firecracker 400 started at 11:00 in the morning and maybe the qualifiers did as well.

Imagine, nobody knew that six months ago. And Fox would still set the time. You made it apparent you understand the relationship between NASCAR and TV.
 
All this complaining about weather no one has complained yet about ....if this does get pushed to tomorrow these teams have to somehow get cars all the way across country to Vegas when most haulers I think leave by Tuesday. Just seems Russian Roulette having a race in an area with finicky weather and then turning around to have a race on the west coast. A logistical nightmare when you have tracks in Atlanta, Rockhingam, Richmond and Homestead that could have been slotted in the second race of the season. The schedule in 21 should really be looked at easing the logistics for teams and hauler drivers, I think that’s the biggest issue the sport has to sort out IMO. Quality of life for those that work behind the scenes should be taken (team members) into consideration There’s no reason they can’t have Daytona-Homestead-say Richmond or another southern track to start then head out west to do the West Coast Swing

Nobody needs the ability to predict the exact moment rain can fall. An earlier start time, say 1:00 pm when races started for decades, always allows for the possibility for more racing time.

It's not going to bother the larger teams, but it could impact the smaller ones...just think of it if they don't make the race, the backmarkers will get all of the love here at RF

Ahh man thats easy , the teams can bring what they need from the shop down to Daytona and do swap out if they need to.
But even being pushed back to Monday is not that big of deal, its about a 7 hour drive back to the shop, there is plenty of time to get back, swap em out in time to head out west.
