2023 IndyCar News / Misc.

Same schedule as this year but with more NASCAR collisions:rolleyes: No clue why they won't move the season finale to Labor Day weekend after the recent ratings desaster for Laguna Seca.
I don't like night races but Gateway races so much better at night it definitely should be one.

Edit: Long Beach, Portland and Laguna Seca are going to be run at 6 pm eastern?
I’m not sure why that says local, as far as I can tell these are all ET.

Gateway definitely races better at night.

It's not gonna "exhibit" favorably with Red Farmer driving it.
Should NASCAR give a two-weekend waiver for some drivers to go race instead? The fact that they scheduled the way that they did tells me they didn’t have much interest in actually having active drivers there to begin with. I know that, like with every series under the sun these days, their hands are tied by NBC. But all they had to do was move the bye one week to make it somewhat easier logistically and they didn’t. Gordon and JJ are about as popular as you can get minus Dale Jr. and at least JJ has kept active recently.

I would’ve liked to see Elliott and Larson but Chase said he didn’t even want to since it’s not a competitive entry. Kyle probably wouldn’t want to be tied up in France when he could be racing sprint cars somewhere.

Can’t happen soon enough. In addition to Milwaukee and Mexico, candidates under real consideration are the streets of Denver, return to Richmond, and an unnamed road course out west - which someone in the comments says is Circuit of the Northwest?:

As RACER chronicled in July, the series harbors an interest in expanding its schedule to reach upwards of 19-20 races per season in an incremental fashion by adding one new event in 2024, 2025, and possibly 2026.

I was going to say I've never even heard of that track...but that's because it hasn't opened yet.

It appears to have a Portland-style chicane as the first turn. I hope I'm looking at that wrong.
Looks like it can be run with or without a chicane.

Given it’s still in development I wouldn’t bank on it actually being a thing, but the concept does look nice. I’d be okay with any three-race combination of those five locations as long as at least one is an oval. They all serve an underserved market or fill a niche in some way.

Milwaukee makes sense the most given the Truck Series event, as does Richmond.

I hope they give Denver another shot I think it would be a good market and have some support for sure.

Road course out west? Maybe they give Utah Motorsports Campus a shot? it’s similar to NOLA in some ways though. I have no clue where else there’s a decent road course besides Willow Springs & Buttonwillow. I think Utah & Denver alternating would be an idea.

I understand the purpose of a chicane, and I have no objections to there being one at this spot on the track. Does it have to be another 'almost 90 followed by and almost 135' a la Portland? Can't it be something more like Watkins Glen or Daytona, less likely to cause problems on restarts?

Richmond never got a proper shot with COVID in 2020 to begin with. Still hate that. The market does pretty well in TV ratings iirc.

Utah could use more events considering how good of a facility it is. Ridge Motorsports Park in WA looks nice if it had more safety features and fan amenities.

Arrow Electronics is based somewhere near Denver and used to have their preseason reveals/media days at the Pepsi Center.

Can’t think of many others not mentioned yet besides Sonoma and I don’t think anyone cares about that one.

If taking off an event helps clear some budget for these I doubt anyone would mind if the second Indy RC race went away.

I definitely prefer Laguna Seca as far as the Bay Area goes, looks easier to attend via public transit.

Utah/Miller Motorsports Campus is a very solid facility for IndyCar for sure. But I overall think there’s more interest in Denver.

Ridge Motorsports Park looks cool, seems kinda far outside of Seattle though

I liked Kyle Kirkwood but he screwed up too many times. He seems to fit better in the IMSA series.

Happy to have Ferrucci back and with AJ Foyt racing. Hoping for good results.

Yes, I remember that signing and I hope he does well there. Always exciting to see some activity in the off-season though.

Upcoming “young driver” evaluations at Sebring:

Andretti - Jake Dennis
DCR - Sting Ray Robb
Juncos - Agustín Canapino
RLL - Jüri Vips

Can a driver fail these evals?

DCR have changed plans to test Marcus Armstrong and Danial Frost instead. Harvey may be in trouble at RLL and DCR would like to field a third car.

There can be any number of reasons why a team would run driver evals. They could be legitimate tryouts, could be a reward for something accomplished in a different series, they could just be a driver paying for a test outing to get noticed or something. It’s just up to the teams to do whatever they want with it.

Carvana was a huge sponsor - $8-10M for the full season - and NTT Data is also rumored to be moving to AMSP on Rosenqvist’s car ahead of Palou joining in 2024. Latifi would fill a pretty substantial funding need.
David Land was the "source".

Take it with a massive grain of salt, but CGR does not play round with sponsors. They want a full-time driver who is willing to do the whole schedule. Al la Ericsson, so we'll see who could be that fit.

David just took it from MP I think.

I’m still curious to see what happens with Mick…does he stay at Haas? Gets one year at Williams? Would 1&1 follow him to Indy? Not sure there are many guys are out there with the requisite talent, experience, and money to grab an expensive CGR seat. Latifi is probably the most available.
