Post 2022 Gen 7 Car Upgrades

Short track/road course aero changes are being considered, possibly some HP increase as well but that’s “complicated”. I’m not sure how much and what aero possibilities would make a difference, the cars just have so much more mechanical grip than their predecessors - better suspension, better brakes, bigger contact patch. I think if they added HP, made the braking zones longer, and spun the rear wheels more there should be at least some improvement.

Yeah, and that doesn't make a lick of sense. I would love to hear NASCAR elaborate on that. The motors we are running right now are neutered, not even close to their full potential. These engine builders can easily make a ton more HP without spending much more.

“Insurance” or “ safety” is always the reason but it’s always a vague explanation from NASCAR

^I thought it was related to the new "hybrid" engine they're supposedly rolling out in 2 or 3 years.
Plus I suspect it's written in RTA blood only can spend X amount on engines in a season. REALLY light pistons & rods are REALLy expensive. Don't last but one race. I'll find a video that helps some understand. Just watched one that covers exactly this topic.

The video is old news. I viewed it weeks ago.

It’s also completely irrelevant in the current context. Today’s engine builders have had component lists and dynamometer files for 1,000 plus HP engines for years. They can change things up to suit a rule change in that direction any time they’re required to do so.

The only thing interesting about Lake Speed is his best-ever racing name.

The average for the last three weeks for a thread to stay on topic is about three posts lol. I don't see how it could be any different off season this year. :idunno:
Okay, that's not climate change. Like everything else the last few weeks, that's Chastain's fault.

Lol teams will never agree to a spending limit. They only spending limit they want is to keep others from spending more than the team asking for it is capable of spending. That's why I think teams asking for more money from nascar is a joke. They've done zero to control their own costs

I'd like to see the seat builders to reach out to football helmet makers VICIS. They have a proprietary cushion designed to reduced impacts to the head. I did a deep dive into these when my Son started playing HS Football. I imagine using their cushion on the drivers seats, and maybe the helmets too. I think it's at least something to look into. P.S. now that the company has a financially solid ownership, I'd bet they'd want to be able to diversify with the technology.

I just watched the 2005 brickyard 400. ********. Between the engine sound, as well as what the television was showing, those cars just had so much more power than the ones today.

I really wonder what more horsepower would look like in these cars. Is there any rumblings anywhere about the possibility of increasing the horsepower?

They limited the amount of engines teams can use in a season. The 900+ HP engines are NOT coming back.

No they have to keep the HP low to attract new manufacturers.....

just an observation, Kurt and Bowman's wreck was almost exclusively backend contact with the wall first, I’d like to see how the car does without the diffuser not only for racing sake but if that is part of the culprit as to why the backend is too stiff causing a more abrupt impact for these guy’s where it's supposed to be crushing and absorbing the impact in combo with the safer barrier. I don't know if that's been discussed or not.

regardless I hope the driver's are demanding the safety of this car to be fixed, not simply improved, but fixed out to the same level the previous car was.

The undertray / diffuser aren’t structural components.

Carbon fiber breaks ... it doesn’t crush or fold.

that makes me even more curious as to why the impacts look more solid than in year's past.

They made the rear of the car more rigid now to keep the transaxle from puncturing the fuel cell

The introduction of a new high speed race car is a very complicated undertaking. There are multiple factors influencing every element of design.

Few, if any of them, avoid significant changes during their useful lifetimes.

Problem is engine builders are actually building for maximum performance, with the nascar restricted 670 hp build package in mind. The engine package is not an exact restriction, but rather a restriction of the power making potential as a percentage. The more power you can make the higher your power number after the restriction, and how the engine is designed to work within those restrictions.

So in a certain effect, they are still building monster motors, just in a slightly different way, and the builders wouldn’t have A, B, and C engine packages to the smaller teams if they all where buuilt to neutered 570 hp

I didn't realize Bozzi was a bean counter. The OEM's have already designed new front ends to go on the cars and I think they have already been tested and approved. Nascar found some things to make the car better with their LeMans car they are testing and some of those improvments are going on the car O'Donnell said.

Let’s hope they change what’s under the hood.
It’s pretty sad when some production smog equipped vehicles have more horsepower than the “race cars.”
More to speed than HP. Take that smog equipped vehicle with more HP and put it on the track and it will get lapped and be in the way.

But you can also take the existing car and give it more hp, worse aero and suspension parameters that would slow it down make it harder to drive. IMO if you don't have enough hp to spin the tires at a short tracks you just don't have good racing. Even tire wear doesn't help if the hp is so low that you can't light up the tires. A tire that wears out and enough hp to make a driver manage it will make good racing.
