To me best driver = most points from race 1 to the last race. The old system didn't allow the guy who scored the most points to lose, unless of course they got a points penalty to take away some points. If you lost the championship under a full season system then the other person did better all season with getting points and finishing, and getting the most out of races. But still give the winner more points and that helps makes winning important, while also making sure someone performed week in and week out, every single race.

I'm talking about points here. By the way points are now, Justin would have to have a perfect day, both stage wins, race winner, and fastest lap, and Connor not get any stage points, and finish dead last, and I believe Justin would beat him.
 
There isn't a perfect points system period. Only variations. A simple change to the Latford weighing a bit more on winning would have balanced it out quite a bit. But with the added stage points that I don't see them getting rid off, it's possible the Latford would be over balanced on points awarding winning when they count stage points also.

If they wanna keep stage points, the best out come is, whatever 2nd place would get for winning stage 1 and 2(and fastest lap) then the winner should at minimum be guaranteed 15 more points, maybe even 20. But whatever they do, the winner should be who leaves a race with the most points, even with bonus points factored in.

Hong conceded that Versant hopes to get a new event soon, but noted the company remains focused on airing the NASCAR playoffs. “We obviously want to try some new venues, but we also take pride in having the 10 playoff races and in our package crowning a champion,” he said.

NASCAR has been exploring changes to its playoff format and car model next year todraw more fans. Asked whether Versant has any specific preference on how NASCAR determines its champion, Hong was largely deferential.

“We’re proud to have that playoff package,” he said, “so independent of format or anything like that, we like the season-ending part of the package.”

Would not be my first choice because I do think a win deserves a bonus, but I could live with it and be satisfied. It would still be be much better than the current resets.

Oh **** I forgot they threw us a bone with the "Regular Season Champion" gimmick. Yet the Regular Season Champion doesn't get an automatic pass to the second round of playoffs.
 
It would be a bad look if either Heim or Zilisch to have dominant seasons and go home without the title. (yes, this is from me)

Pretty much a no brainer. Brian France laid down and once you let the TV weasels have a say, it's hell to get them to see the light. The ratings taking a tank during the playoffs is helping to convince them.

NASCAR consolidating the rights before the 2001 season made this possible. When the tracks had to individually negotiate TV deals, the partners couldn’t demand these kind of changes.
