2014 Fontana - Auto Club 400 - Pre Race Thread

lol I overstated for effect, but If they change tires, they need a pit crew. When have teams EVER changed tires during qualifying?

When have they ever had multiple rounds for qualifying in the same day?

If cars are parked on pit road because they're saving their tires, it kinda defeats part of the reason for having ko qualifying, which was to make it more interesting for the fans.

It would be more interesting to me if more cars were on the track, and not parked on pit road saving their tires.

I don't recall many cars taking just 1 or 2 laps and ending the session, so it really isn't an issue. Qualifying is indeed more interesting this way, and you don't have to devote a few hours to watch it. I'm not sure nascar was looking for that elusive 'game 7' moment in qualifying, they just wanted to get away from the paint drying effect.

I'm more of a fan of this method over the old one. There's a lot more strategy involved with this making it more entertaining to watch. Sitting on times and saving tires for that final session is all part of it.

I agree. Some teams will hit it early, but most will make multiple runs. If they change tires, they need to assign pit boxes with officials and have crews go over the wall. For qualifying? o_O

I wasn't really following discussion on having actual pit stops during qualifying but that's fine as a one time thing in the All Star setting. The pit crews today are normally a Sunday only thing. They come in Sunday morning and leave Sunday after the race. They aren't there all weekend long. I don't think it makes sense to have these guys show up two days early for qualifying and then sit around until the Sunday show.

They don't need pit boxes to change tires, and it would only take 2 people to change the tires. It's not like they're racing the clock to do it like during a race.

@dustinlong

These teams must sit out 15 minutes of Cup practice because late to inspection last week: 1, 36, 23, 14, 66 & 41.

At Phoenix everybody had a set of scuffs waiting behind the pit wall but nobody changed any. I assume they were there in case they got a flat. Every car had several crew men waiting in case they were needed.

heres Harvicks guys behind the wall right before qualifying started

Nice to see Jeff put up the 6th fastest time in race trim. Looking good.

I wonder what the car looks like in qualifying trim. Jimmie's looks bad fast.

I missed it but I've seen on Facebook that every Ford has engine issues.. something about an o ring for the cooling.. I guess it was on NASCAR live. Did anyone see that and/or have more information about it?

From what I saw Jack Roush says they will deal with it after qualifying.. but that's going off someone on Facebook.

Hahahahaha Larry Mac.. there is no "marine layer" in Fontana. That was smog. :D

A Mechanic is standing outside the garage as Roger Penske is coming in to check out the new Fusion, and can't help but notice that Mr. Penske has a Dog under each arm.
The Mechanic waves and says, "Welcome back, Roger, Nice dogs, sir."
Penske smiles and says, "These aren't dogs. These are genuine Labrador Retrievers. I got this one for Brad, and I got this one for Joey."
The mechanic says, "Good trade, sir."

As for shortening races, DEJr was calling for that back in 2011.

I heard about it on Nascar live.

I guess it isn't a 'to the back' repair?
