2016 Bristol - Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race - Pre Race Thread

It makes a big difference. If the single groove is on the bottom, you can easily get under someone and bump them up the racetrack to get them out of the way. That's the way "old" Bristol worked. If the single groove is on top you still can't pass cleanly but you also can't bump and run someone since you're right up against the wall.

That's how Martinsville works too. Could you imagine if they tried to install progressive banking at Martinsville?

if the progressive banknig was removed why is the top still faster?

I've been wondering the same thing.

You would think it would be back to the old way with the bottom lane being the faster one. Which was their intent when they removed the progressive banking but it just didn't turn out that way from some reason.

Was it totally removed? I have been seeing conflicting evidence. The track website says it is still variable, 24 to 28 degrees. That's the same as the 2007 configuration, no? Yet this story from 2012 seems to indicate it was flattened out to 24 degrees uniformly. Does anyone know the definite answer?

Keselowski ain't won there, day or night, since Penske's switch to Ford.

Could mean trouble for Bowyer, Busch 'n Harvick next year.

They seem to have had little problem passing cleanly on the top the last couple of years.

We need Dr. Phil in the Control Tower to determine if the accident was a mask for a debris caution or a racing deal.

Exactly. I'm with you on this Charlie, I don't see much difference between single low groove Bristol and single high groove Bristol.

You have to be 3 to 4 tenths of a second faster than anybody to make a pass on the low side with the new high groove Bristol. The faster cars could march through the field and use that bumper if they were running out of time with the old classic Bristol. The place used to sell out a year in advance... Take a look at the stands the last few races. Don't fix what ain't broke.

Tony wants his helmet back.....

2012 — an incident involving Kenseth, this time with Tony Stewart as the aggrieved party. While the two were fighting for the lead on Lap 332, Kenseth slid into Stewart sending both into the spin cycle on the frontstretch. Although Kenseth continued to race, Stewart climbed from his car, removed his helmet and with both hands threw it into hood the No. 17 Ford. He eventually returned the race and finished 27th.

Where's the helmet?

NASCAR didn’t fine Stewart, who was the defending champion that season and 10th in the standings at the time. However, the sanctioning body did keep his helmet — and has never returned it to the driver.

“I know exactly where that helmet is,” Stewart said. “I won’t say where it’s at, but I know who has that helmet. I will say this, I was in his office one day and I almost took the helmet. I was going to do a deal where I took it to different locations and took pictures of it and then sent him messages saying, ‘If you want to see your helmet alive, you’ll comply with all of our demands.’

“But he was a person in that industry that could have the potential to make my life a little more difficult then it already is every week. So I’ve let that dog lie.”

During the aftermath of the Bristol incident, Stewart said he didn’t “give a crap” about the helmet and “the hell with the helmet”. However, he’s changed his tune in recent years.

No, Stewart has not given up on his quest to retrieve the helmet. He just might have to wait until he’s no longer behind the wheel in NASCAR.

“I didn’t say I didn’t want it back,” Stewart said. “I just said I didn’t have it back yet. I know where it’s at. That’s the main thing.”

The weather forecast for this area has been all over the place for the whole weekend.

For those not watching truck practice...so far the bottom groove is looking a lot like Darlington's bottom groove....deserted. It's actually loosening the trucks, especially as they switch from the modified surface to the regular surface at the end of the turn.

Yes they should have put on only 1 layer of rubber on the bottom (about 40 laps worth )
