I really appreciate you taking the time to research and post this information and it really shows how my baby boomer generation is aging out. Nascar has an older audience that is aging at a faster pace than others, virtually has no presence with those 17 and under and actually has less viewers in that age group than figure skating.

At this point I don't feel Nascar is irrelevant but it is approaching the precipice unabated and due to the broadcast rights deal may be able to exist artificially for the next 5 years but after 10 years it will be a skeleton of what its today. It may end up like horse racing where there is huge noise for the Kentucky Derby (Daytona 500) and a little over a whisper for the Preakness and Belmont (Charlotte 600 and Southern 500) and crickets for the rest. I don't think even the most unabashed Nascar cheerleader could extrapolate these numbers and see anything but the series ending up like open wheel is today.

I'm trying to do my part in keeping the younger generation interested. My 8, 6, and 5 year old boys love to watch NASCAR with me and am taking them to first race this year. Hopefully it rubs off on them.

That's great! You can bitch about it or do something about it. Looks like you're doing something about it.

That was an awesome set of graphics. NASCAR seems to be suffering the same fate as a majority of the other sports. What surprises me the most is the overall decline in Action Sports interest. That, for the most part, describes every sport. Fans are losing interest across the board.
Liberty Media just spent $8 billion to buy F1, and they are convinced they have to emphasize digital delivery of F1 to justify their investment. They seem pretty savvy, from the articles I have read. And they have probably done more research than most of us here on this board, but that is just a guess.

I hope you guys have a great time and what you are doing is what needs to be done over and over again with many others or kids won't be exposed to Nascar and won't ever become fans.

You're confusing me with someone that has more than just a general interest in this topic. I didn't sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night so my interpretation of the numbers may differ from actual or implied experts on this subject.

JMO but I think the key to the stats begins and ends with age and how that bodes for the future. My generation was huge in terms of numbers and therefore dictated a lot of what went on in all aspects of society but now most boomers are between 60-70 and not long for this world. I was reading where millennials have overtaken the boomers in numbers so as they impose their will on society things may be turned upside down for me and millions of others.

IDK squat about F1 but isn't it a global racing series with rivalries between the nations the drivers were born in? I thought it was similar to soccer and if I am right having access to a global audience (think China) would be worth a lot of coin.

2014 Dover viewers = 5.4 million compared to 3.4 million viewers in 2017

2014 Pocono viewers = 4.5 million viewers compared to circa 3.3-3.4 million viewers in 2017

Make of it what you will.

yep some continue miss the point that among other things Nascar has been used to boost the ratings for their cable sports networks and that graphic shows the success.

2014 = Stewart + Gordon + Biffle + Edwards + FOX and TNT

FS1 is available in the same amount of homes as ESPN so I don't think the network is the problem. I can't see Nascar suffering from the loss of Edwards and Biffle but I can see that Gordon and Stewart may have some impact but not to the tune of over 3 million viewers for the 2 races I listed.

If you are right and I am wrong Nascar is screwed when Junior hangs it up.

Looks like my Pens ruled the standings this week. Deservedly so.

And.....

It's also clear that among the motorsports world, NASCAR's still King by a wide margin.

Nice demo for the NHL too. The next question is where will MAF play next year?

Vegas more than likely. It's a damn shame. I wish they could retain the pair as that was the key to the most recent success. On a side note..... Parade tomorrow @ 11am.

Let the post count continue.....

Enjoy every minute of it and it will be interesting to see if MAF goes to Vegas and if so do they keep him or flip him. It is a great shame that he cannot remain with the team as he eclipsed Tom Barasso as the best Penguin net minder, IMO.

Whether I like the direction NASCAR has taken or not, it's cool to see some good news that doesn't feel like desperate spin. Those numbers are encouraging.

On the surface they look good for this period in time but the problem is the age of the audience as it is neck and neck with horse racing and golf in terms of an old audience. Hopefully some new and enthusiastic young people will kick the tires on Nascar and become fans.

It's a learning experience, last year they learned that folding in a drag race after Nascar brings in better numbers. They were using a bit of stick n ball a couple years ago wasn't working tha well. Most aren't aware or don't take into consideration that FS-1 and NBCSN are creating value out of their new sports channels using the big number sporting events like Nascar, Indycar, and F-1 among others. Plenty of stick n ball on the on air channels, ya got to pay to see most of the races.

I respectfully disagree with your assertions as to the best of my knowledge most MLB, NBA and NHL games are on regional cable networks like MSG. The only pro league I know of that has most of its games on over the air stations is the NFL but if you want to see MNF or some other games you need cable if you are not a cord cutter. With FS1 and NBCS being available in the same number of homes as ESPN IDK why the ratings have taken such a beating other than people either can't or don't want to pay to see Nascar. Any thoughts?

Years ago I went to 12 MIS races in a row. The stands were packed and you barely had enough room for your own numbered seat. Sardines comes to mind. Hot, sweaty, muggy, you didnt dare have a beer and later try to excuse yourself to use the john and you knew for sure if the person sitting next to you used deodorant. (or not) Your knees were in the back of the head of the row in front of you. I saw some good races ( even Dale Sr win one) but it was too much. Over 110k in attendance was normal. Yesterday's MIS race, I'm just guessing 20-22k or lots of leg room. Maybe its time to go back?
