2017 Sonoma - Toyota/Save Mart 350 - Pre Race Thread

I picture the tires doing like they do in cartoons, hands coming out and grabbing the road. :)

LOL. good image. Thanks for coming back SOI. I know you think DP is a sparkle pony, but I like reading your race knowledge.

hey :) I haven't called her that since I've been back. She has been taking some hard hits in the car. I worry more about her those add up.

TBH, since that Kansas wreck, she has driven like a woman possessed. I hope against hope she is still out thee in '18. Without a solid top 5/win I am unsure though

I live only about 35-40 miles from Sonoma...Yes I've been to a Couple of the Cup Races there...That being said...You can't "PAY ME" ENOUGH $$$$ to go to that track!! There are ONLY "2" ways INTO/OUT OF that track and the Traffic Jam's are simply MONUMENTAL!! Until they SOMEHOW "FIX" that...I'm NOT gonna spend 2 PLUS Hour's not moving a FOOT outta the parking lot's in all that summertime California "HEAT"!! :bleh:

We used to stay Friday -Monday and would be one of the last motorhomes to leave the infield on Monday. Unfortiontley, we lost our space in the infield when they made changes to the track and stands. Now we just go on Fridays to avoid the traffic. Seeing the two practices at the track Friday and the race from the couch Sunday works fine with me. However, I do miss the days we would stay Friday-Monday. Cant wait to see, hear and smell the cars tomorrow.:D

We go almost every year. There are years where the traffic has sucked and years where it hasn't been all that bad. We have figured out a way through the winding vineyards once we get out of the lots that seems to be faster, but that "California Heat" hasn't been hot in a while out there. It is calling for 83 and a breeze this weekend. Besides if you are waiting in the lot and not moving and you know that will be the case, just run the AC......

I have more complaints about the sheer distance you have to trek from the rolling hills to the seats if you do not get a paring pass.

Well we'll "SEE" how that heat works out!! LOL!! It's supposed to be the HOTTEST day of the year SO FAR here in Pleasanton, Ca. About "106" so the TV folks say...Yup!! It sure "IS" a Damned HIKE to the seat's...NO QUESTION there!! LOL!!

Ya, that trek can be brutal, especially with a hangover.:lol2:

I live in Modesto, it's 111 right now. I know the heat. The weather pattern is cooling beginning over the weekend, 84 on Saturday and 82 on Sunday and then back into the high 70's in Sonoma next week. I have been 7 out of the last 10 years and we have had 2 years of hot weather. I hate the heat, but 82, while still warm for me personally is not by any means unbearable with a 10 mph breeze and cloudy skies to start the day. Hell, we got rained on a few years ago to start.

Choker's Delight.
I don't know one racer - not even one - who hasn't gone into a corner that he needed to execute... and missed that corner. It happens in every Cup race, every F1 race, every MotoGP race. It's not always the last lap and it's not always for the win, but it's not uncommon that it is both. If this stuff was easy to do perfectly every time, everyone would be doing that and no one would bother watching.

Beats eating the wall coming off turn 4 on the last lap of the Indy 500, J.R. THAT'S choking.

That broke my heart IMHO.

Yeah, it was a **** up and it cost Hildebrand a possibility of a solid career in IndyCar. He's back now, but his career would have been better off. To think that was six years ago...

Alon Day reaches yet another milestone as first Israeli to compete in Cup race

Alon Day likes making NASCAR history – and he’ll do so again Sunday at Sonoma Raceway.

After being the first Israeli driver to compete last year in both the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and Xfinity Series, the 25-year-old Day will make his Cup debut in the Toyota/Save Mart 350.

“It’s pretty big,” said Day, who will also become the first driver from the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series to drive in a Cup race. “When I was growing up, it was my dream to race in the biggest level in NASCAR.

“I spoke about it during (NASCAR) media day in January and less than six months later, here it is, I’m doing my first Cup race. I’m totally excited. I can’t even explain it.”

The trucks are looking good, looks like they have a competition going, Bell, first, Briscoe 2nd, Nemechek 4th in the first practice..Toyota, Ford, Chevy. Briscoe was talking a bit of head games when interviewed.

Jimmie Johnson crew chief Chad Knaus' weekend race notes stolen

Chad Knaus has some scrambling to do this weekend.

When Knaus, who is Jimmie Johnson's crew chief, and his wife got into San Francisco Wednesday night ahead of this weekend's NASCAR race in Sonoma, the couple went out for dinner at Fisherman's Warf for about an hour and a half.

According to The Associated Press, when the couple got back from dinner, Knaus discovered the window on his rental car had been busted out and his briefcase, with his laptop in it, had been stolen.

Micheal Waltrip's take on this should be priceless.....................
