2024 Weather

Partisan gibberish aside, you are missing the point. A lib went to such lengths to protect a fellow lib that he implied that the lack of water had no effect on fighting the fires. He's wrong.

What are you supposed to do in 100 mph winds???

You guys are so bent on blaming libs for everything that you can’t just admit this was a historic and unprecedented emergency.

That's why you make AND FILL reservoirs.
Reservoirs need maintenance. If you are California, you do that maintenance during what isn’t typically wildfire season and is typically rainy season.

And before you say they should’ve predicted this, a month ago they were saying NC would experience the warmest winter on record with very little chances of precipitation and were getting ready for the first winter storm we’ve had since I moved to the coast.

Newscast week or so ago mentioned LA hasn't had measurable rainfall since April. Just a little dry.

I have never denied the magnitude of the fire. Don't assume.

How long was the reservoir drained and what was the maintenance needed?

Why don't you find it and post it. You are the one who thinks it is so crucial. BTW they didn't run out of water. They were pulling so much at once they lost pressure in areas. Didn't you watch the president musk clip I posted? He is standing right there and the fire official were dropping tank trucks for the crews to use. There wasn't a water shortage. President musk had to shut his phone off because that wasn't what he wanted to hear.

Here you go. Now go find your reservoir. Didn't I give you a math equation about the ratio of fire trucks and structures burning?

Sounds like an opportunity for the other stations in those markets.
I don't think so. I have a buddy who lives in Arkansas, and this happened to him a couple of years ago. When the tornado's are flying, his closest weather people are about 90 miles away and they spend most of the time focused on that area, which is larger in population.

There's probably not a loaf of bread or gallon of milk on the shelves in the Deep South states today. You can tell when people are really desperate - they buy the whole wheat products. They'll buy smooshed hot dog buns before they settle for anything that's not white. The hardware stores have probably put snow shovels by the front doors for suckers to buy and use once or twice. Then they post detailed lists of the requirements to return a generator - no hours on the meters, no smell of fuel in the tanks, original packaging, must have receipt and we don't give a damn about your membership status, etc.

I'm engaged in hand-to-nose combat with a head cold so I'm not going out next week anyway. I'd already dropped out of a two-day birding weekend up @HoneyBadger's way. Darling Bride went after medications and Hot and Sour Soup. The IMSA low-tier VP Racing Challenge is on Peacock at 2. Time to refill the bird feeders and prepare for that 'Great Backyard Bird Count' presentation I'm doing in a couple of weeks.

It's better than having fires.

The Louisiana storm? As of two hours our local weather guys say they're getting up to 6"

I'm in North Carolina.

They've gone from 8" to 1/2" over the weekend. Now some are even saying no precipitation this week at all, which I expect. We are in a drought.

But you never know with these things. It could surprise us all and dump a foot of snow. Not likely though.

I rarely look at any source other than NWS. They 'show the work', posting the forecaster's assessment of conditions and the thinking behind the predictions. They've been conservative all along and up until yesterday evening they refused to call the total accumulation at all. They said the modeling of the fronts and cells wasn't reliable enough, the incoming cold air too dry, and there wasn't sufficient off-shore force to move large amount of moisture inland. When they started predicting depths last night, it was never over 2".

It won't bother me if we never see any.

Our local weather guys show more detail than anybody. They put up hours worth of videos showing different forecasting models and explain in detail why they drew their conclusion and what could potentially change the outcome. They crushed the NWS with the snowstorm we got a couple weeks ago. Still, all of 'em will have hits & misses every now & then.

Okay. Haven't followed that one. Is it dissipating or did it shift elsewhere?

The 6"-plus forecasts made days ago assumed the cold air and warm moisture were going to come together in the way most favorable for heavy snowfall. Now closer to the event, it's clearer the conditions aren't likely to cooperate.

Whose forecast?

That allows them to say they nailed it regardless of how bad their first predictions were.

This morning NWS is calling for 1-3" down my way, 1-2 for @KTMLew01, and @HoneyBadger could get 3-5".

I recall conditions as cold and windy as it's supposed to be result in dry, powdery snow that doesn't pack much.

EDIT and they just bumped me up to 2-4". That should give the terriers something to play in. I guess those guys that are scheduled to install a new countertop in the guest bathroom aren't going to make it tomorrow.

Something I never thought about until I heard on the radio is these southern states aren't equipped for dealing with snow. They don't have snowplows or snow shovels, etc. because they never needed them. What to do?

Like we did for years in Arkansas, wait for it to melt. Everything is going to be shut down for the most part.
