500 RACE thread

I think it's asinine for drivers in a plate race to think it's asinine for others drivers to want drafting help, a bump, whatever --

THAT is plate racing.

McDowell was up in the front of the pack -- also getting help by other drivers behind him,

BUT it's true, nobody should feel entitled to your drafting help -- just like Ford doesn't have to support McDowell and his fourth tier team...

Ask Danica about drafting help joey....cry your squinty tears elsewhere.

I remember years ago, Kenny Scrader was interviewed after a plate race. He was in a position at the end of the race to help Dale Sr., and he didn't. I can't recall which race it was, but Sr. was none to happy about another Chevy driver not helping him. And the guy doing the interview asked Schrader about Sr. not being pleased. Schrader responded, " It's not my job to make sure he wins races". End of discussion. I tried to find that clip, if someone else can, or recalls it more clearly, please chime in.

That's great but where did Kenny finish?

'cuz Ford has really been going all out to help FRM.
I'd think ol' Edsel would be pretty happy about the way that little 2 car team ran on Sunday.
Also, Joey didn't win.

Talk about perseverance. This is what @RyanJNewman ran in the final 10 laps in the #Daytona500.
Whatever it takes!

I do not remember. But he was racing for his best finish, not some one elses.
I get what you're saying, but sometimes you have to choose wisely to get to the front. I would say Earnhardt would have been a wise choice. Also, Schrader and Earnhardt were like family. This really doesn't sound like Kenny, but, whatever.

I sensed a little frustration between the two at the time. I wish I could find that clip.
When I think of Kenny Wallace's career, he's best remembered for being a runner up to Dale Sr. Had he not helped Sr., he may not have had a second place finish. One never knows.

So true.

McDowell has watched replays, spoken with Logano and Ford executives, and said he now realizes his best bet for a win would have been staying in line behind Logano.

“You’ve got a split-second decision to make a move and I had the momentum and thought it was best to go the outside and thought that was the right move,” McDowell said. “Looking back at it, if I could do it over again, the bottom would have been better for me."

Not sure how reliable the source is..

Well, good on McDowell. He probably had the best shot of his career to win a Cup race in his 286 starts, but he made a choice and it didn't work out. But then made a big deal about not caring for the manufacturer of his race car because Bowyer did him wrong.

McDowell gets to make those choices as a free citizen and race driver. I applaud that. Ford may have something to say, and if both parties are not in agreement, then McDowell can find his dream future somewhere else.

McDowell's move was good for the integrity of NASCAR, but his reaction to Logano may not serve him well.

Logano should've kept this behind the scenes -- as a Cup Champion, it's not a good look...

“Those guys don’t work with Front Row Motorsports at all,” McDowell said. “They don’t help us at all. They want us to be there to support them when they need it, but they don’t let us in on when they’re going to pit, they don’t share strategy, they don’t tell us what’s going on. And so my frustration with Joey is, ‘Don’t come to me talking about brand loyalty when you guys don’t do nothing to help us. And you want me to help you when you don’t do anything for us?’”

I've seen worse. I really don't think him being a champ makes a difference.. he had an issue with someone and talked to him about it. It's not like he threw a hissy fit about it he just said he was surprised and people act like he went down there swinging.

Logano is full on this year. After Stenhouse finished off most of remaining fast Fords and Chevy's when he and Larson tangled, there wasn't much left to work with for the final restart. Oh well on to Atlanta, curious to see what kind of car everybody shows up with.

What did Logano gain for his petulant reaction?

If Ford wants to flex, that is literally their business, but McDowell as a competitor needs to make racing moves based on what gives him the best shot of winning, whether or not it works out for him...

When did I say Joey gained anything?

The only issue I really have with McDowells move was that not only was it a bad move.. he didnt push anyone he just left Kyle and Joey both hanging.. and then basically stated that he did it out of spite because the Fords didnt work him him before that.

After watching the replay of the final restart a handful of times, Logano had the opportunity to get in behind McDowell and push the outside lane with Ford, instead he opted to stay in behind Kyle Busch and push him to Hamlin, so that he remained the lead Ford, and hope for help from behind.

McDowell's move didn't make any sense, regardless of affiliation, if he's trying to win, he had what seemed like a good run down the inside, but instead opted to float up behind Kyle Busch and stalled all of his momentum.

Judging by Radioactive, McDowell isn't the only Ford not interested in helping Logano win either.

The racing behind the Leader was a good hard scramble for second place. Watching the finish without considering numbers, emblems, drivers, etc. and that was a good scramble.

Watching the drivers trying to choose the best lane/partner was edge-of-the-seat fun to watch. KyBu and Joey both had good runs up to Hamlin but that race was Won on the Restart (KyBu's gift); and Lost by the pursuit competitors lack of organizing a final run to challenge Hamlin.

Austin in 2018 had the top lane run off 2 leading the train -- and Aric was a sitting duck. Jeff Gordon nails the analysis on that call coming off 2.

So Austin was in the right place running second in the closing laps last year, but Kyle running in second in the closing laps this year gifted the race to Hamlin? Which way is it?

Both.. It wasn't the same race.. different year different race different circumstances.. different runs etc

Austin wasn't on the front row for the Final Restart, Austin and his lane were organized, and Austin had the killer instinct to win and acted on it -- all missing from KyBu's effort this year.

The two situations were not the same -- so comparisons are not relevant...

Running second on the last lap of the Daytona 500 is identical. You take the white flag in second, then it's up to the leader to keep you from passing. Not rocket science. You're saying Kyle laid down on his team. You can't prove that.

No.

Look at Austin Dillon's lane -- that line up of cars, especially coming off Turn 2. Jeff called it perfect. Austin wanted it more than KyBu...

It was not the same race as this year.

Hes not even saying Kyle laid down on the last lap.. it was on the restart when he let Hamlin in front of him. Which btw I have no issues with.. well I mean I dont like that it took Joey out of contention but I would expect the same thing if he and Brad were 1-2

So Kyle Busch gave away the Daytona 500? Did Mike Tyson throw the fight against Buster Douglas?

Tony and Jr repeated what some of us have been saying all along about manufacturers running together and sticking together.. Problem is I think none of them have the bandwidth to run the clips, or they hear only what they want to hear:idunno: Kyle should have stuck on Denny's tail and sling shotted by IMO

Maybe an interview with the Toyota guy?? Maybe that  Nah they probably won't believe David Wilson either probably

“To be clear, we also agreed that with 10 (laps) to go, it’s every man for himself. In the end each driver was working toward winning the race, not pushing one of their competitors to the win. But awful proud of the innovation and creativity deployed that particular Sunday.”

Toyota exec explains how Gibbs-Hendrick deal at Daytona took trust

I just read this article and he brought up some interesting points.I don’t feel quite as strong about as he does but just think about the casual fan who reads it.

Glad somebody read it. On the clip above Stewart and Jr talk about how they were teamed up in many restrictor plate races from back in the day, so that information and team/manufacturer practices have been around for years for plate races casual fan or not casual fan

I have asked 3 times now and as far as I can tell no one has answered the question.
Why didn't Kyle race that last restart the way he would have if any of the 38 other cars were beside him? Can someone explain this?
So with anyone else beside him he wouldn't have worried about Joey winning? Only because it was a JGR car?
He wouldn't have left any of them pull down if front of him!
And he was only guaranteed one lap to race Denny. Why do you all say he had two? Two was assumed but not guaranteed?
Really if it was team orders does it matter? It was team orders between which JGR car coach wanted to win. I don't like team orders but to me team orders are bringing out a caution when a team car needs it. Or wrecking a competitor. Or doing what MR did?
I would not want it to happen. But if any teams cars are all up front at the end of the race should it not be there choice which one of the cars win. I mean they put up all the money time and effort.
Why is it OK for team cars to affect the race on every lap.with team orders except the last one?

As best as I can tell, there is not a single person that can answer your questions, save for Kyle Busch. He may have thought second spot was the best spot to be in. I surely do not know. He hasn't told me. At the same time, no one can truthfully say that he gave the race away either. There is no proof of that. He may have thought he would get more help if he pulled out to pass Denny. After all, another JGR car finished 3rd.
