I did today. I heard "fuel saving" from lap 5. I heard "clean air." I heard, "Can't pass." I saw a bunch of people in the grandstands, and radio announcers talking about a great race. I am ******* dumbfounded. Guess we have bigger expectations, or do NASCAR fans just bitch? Latter. Thank you.
Those pale in comparison to the effects of the CART / IRL split. It could be argued that split opened the door for NASCAR to rise to national prominence.The IRL didn't molest the point system or change the way races are are run with segments or ruin qualifying or design a hideous car that no one had anything good to say about.
The subject being discussed was passing.not in the corners spinning all by yourself, the change in downforce was the main cause of that..

I’d take what you said so well here and expand on that:When the Racing is good, that is the show. No Chase, Playoffs, Championship Race, or Double point gimmicks needed.This tit for tat is a pointless race to the bottom. I like IndyCar racing and I like NASCAR racing. Just for giggles, to @Revman, yes, in an actual 500 mile auto race, fuel management and strategy can be an issue from the first lap onward.
NASCAR's Chase and Playoffs initiatives have been both ineffective at increasing interest and a stain on the credibility of the championship. It is true that IndyCar hasnt done anything quite so absurd, but a double points finale is pretty damn gimmicky and not justified.
IndyCar did indeed design a hideous car that barely even looked open wheel anymore, and are now moving back to a more classic, less busy look.
From the 90s onward, NASCAR managed their business much more effectively and have been exponentially more commercially successful. The open wheel crowd nearly bickered themselves out of existence. Going forward, I'd be happiest to see both series succeed and put on quality racing with more focus on rewarding driver / team skill and execution and less focus on 'the show'.

Just how fast did Elliot go in his t-Bird again?Back in the 80's it was done with less downforce and much slower speeds

Times four!double points this or finale that. Neither of em pay double money. The million bucks Xfinity Dash for Cash blows them all away IMO.
