A Elliot in the #9 is the way it should be and this should of been done in the first place

as for the #24 hopefully Byron does well, Still holding out hope the #5 is used by a different team in 2018

Nice chart, but they should have added all of the part time drivers and numbers they ran too. For instance, Tim Richmond, Rick Hendrick and Jimmy Means all drove the 25 in 1987, Rick drove the 18 in 1988, Greg Sacks drove the 18, Jimmie drove the 48 in five races in 2001, Jack Sprague, Randy Lajoie and others drover the 25 in 1997, Brad K, A. Bowman, etc.
 
All this talk about a driver returning to the same car with the same team and the same crew with a different number took me back to my high school years. "What’s in a name? that which we call a rose: By any other name would smell as sweet."
 
At least y'all aren't like the jr fans who had #8 tattoos and had to add another 8 when he went to the 88

As I pointed out, do it right and put ALL the cars and drivers on it. Might be educational for some people. Also curious where you found that picture of Rick with Geoff and Tim you are using. I have the similar "Front Row Gang 86" poster in my collection, but would like the photo for my screen saver.

Good question, I really don't remember where I found it. I think it may have been from a random post by HMS on social media
 
The #24 car should have been re-branded the #9 car when Chase Elliott came to Cup if this was a possibility the whole time.

With William Byron getting a shot in the #24, I'm convinced Hendrick wanted Elliott to ride off of Gordon's popularity, and now wants Byron to do the same.
 
It strikes me as crazy over-reaction, but I've seen people say how they have rooted for Chase Elliott in the 24, but now will switch their allegiance to William Byron in the 24. Crazy.

Also, some have read this switcheroo as evidence that Mr. H regards Chase as "a bust" and is kicking him aside, while William Byron has now been anointed as "the Chosen One." LMAO.

Here is my personal reaction... It is traditional in Nascar that the team has its numbers, and drivers use them while driving that car. It is a small deal, but HMS is trampling on this Nascar tradition, so it saddens me just a little. (In other series, the pilot has his personal number that he uses regardless of the team, and that's cool, but that's not Nascar.)
 
I will say I think Byron is the next big star along with Larson. The way he dominated trucks last season, and is collecting wins this season, has me fully impressed. IMO him and Larson are gonna be NASCARs next big rivalry
 
I think it's cool Chase embraces the Elliott history by running the 9 as opposed to Jr who never wanted to run the 3 in cup ( could you imagine he did sign with RCR in 2007, the merchandise....). Chase wanting to add to Bills legacy while making his own legacy is pretty neat. Guess I'm a sucker for that.
 
I think the 24 has a better chance with William. At least I hope so. Chase may need more time to get rolling, but there's also never a guarantee that a "talented" prospect becomes a top dog in the cup series. So many drivers get the hype of being the next big thing... 12 years ago magazines left and right in the racing world had Jamie McMurray on the covers and in depth articles about how he's set to be the next "Jeff Gordon" of NASCAR... then he went 4.5 years without a win and limited top tens... Also when team 48 started up, No one was seriously going out of their way to say "look out for Jimmie Johnson... it's just kind of interesting honestly.

Then in the other hand a few guys can and do live up to all the hype. It would be better if each race car driver had the chance to grow with their progressions, but there's little money for media outlets to make if that were allowed to happen.
 
I think Chase will be just fine. It seems so easy to forget that he's 21 years old, is 7th in points for a very underperforming team, has been pretty much outrunning the 48 on a weekly basis and came about a gallon of gas from winning the Daytona 500. The great Jeff Gordon didn't make the top ten his rookie year and only finished 9th in his second year. The only real difference? Jeff won a couple big races, one of them by an at the time Hail Mary pit strategy. If Ernie Irvan doesn't cut that tire, does Jeff win at Indy? He was a heartbeat away from going into season three without a win and a LOT of torn up race cars.

Probably the same reason Bowman is staying with #88, hoping to get some Jr fans to hop on board with Bowman.
 
"Chasing History" with Claire B......now the 9. Whatcha say we leave the kid the hell alone and become the driver that we all know he will be? Always get a little nervous when we talk about these kinds of things before performance and wins justifies the attention. He was the second coming of the 24, and now he is trying to live up to his Dad? Dunno Mr. H.
 
I find it humorous that Chase took over "JEFF GORDON'S 24!", and Byron is kinda just taking over, well...the 24. The way the media is playing this thing, I guess Chase absorbed all of the pressure for young Byron :rolleyes:
 
I think Axalta wanted to cover the #24, and Napa cares more about Chase than the number he runs.

Yeah I always thought they wanted back with the 24 and Chase was the perfect driver to do it with, but NAPA was definitely not stepping aside to make room for them.

I believe it.

I have enough Gordon/Elliott/HMS gear to last several lifetimes. I don't NEED to buy anything else. I'll buy an Elliott shirt next year specifically because of the Camaro, but that'll probably be it.

Now if Coors would unexpectedly decide to step up and sponsor Elliott, all bets are off, I'll buy a ton of merch :D
 
I hope they change the number font on the 24 car. The way it is that number is Jeff Gordon's, always has been, always will be. Byron needs his own identity. IMO I think Austin Dillon made a mistake by not choosing his own style of number. Then again, fans would probably have had a cow if he had changed it. I know that when I see that color, and that number, I don't think of Austin.
