Cable cutters, rejoice

Netflix appears to be killing off it's cheapest ad-free plan and pushing people to an ad-supported plan.

Advertising money beats the hell out of subscription fees. I'm still fully expecting ad-free television to be a thing of the past within the next few years. Glad I have my DVD player.

Just saw an email that Peacock prices are increasing. Seriously...what isn't increasing in price nowadays???
For basic 'Premium', up $2 / month from $6 to $8; or up $20 / year from $60 to $80.

Between Indy, IMSA, and golf, we average 5 Peacock viewings a month. I spend more than $8 on Diet Pepsi every WEEK. The increased price is still reasonable to me, although I appreciate Peacock reminding me of the discounted annual rate. Now that it looks like I'm keeping it, it's probably time I switched from monthly billing.

Oh yeah, I’ll stick with it at least through the end of the year until WWE moves to Netflix. Not sure I’ll stay after that unless NASCAR moves to peacock in some form.

It occurred to me this morning that the timing of this price change and the start date of the Olympics might be more than coincidence.

Or not. Just a stray thought.
The new NBA deal is probably going to cause a decent rate bump next fall as well. $8 isn’t bad for now, and I do use it for stuff outside of IMSA and IndyCar (which is going away anyways), but I do wonder how much higher it’ll reach. ESPN+ doubled from $5-6 to $11 pretty quickly recently. I’ll say Peacock is usually pretty good about special rate offers though.

NBC has made NASCAR their anchor programming for USA it seems.

If NASCAR fans think juggling four sources will be difficult,

Consumer Reports - Why it's hard to find games on TV

It's ridiculous.

Last year, Jacksonville Jaguars games were spread out across: ABC, CBS, Disney+, ESPN, ESPN+, Fox, NBC, NFL Network, NFL+, Peacock, and Prime Video.

And this stuff is getting worse and worse because of Amazon. I have WNBA League Pass now and it's both cheap ($35/year) and easy to use on the YouTube platforms. But with the NBA and WNBA's new contracts, I'll have to pay monthly for an Amazon Prime subscription ($15/month) and then an additional $13/month.

Between these companies eating up all the sports properties and forcing you to buy subscriptions on top of subscriptions on top of subscriptions, the end of ad-free programming on something you're paying for, and things like nerfing audio and video quality, streaming has become nothing more than a money grab.

Did you think it wouldn't? Like cable and internet hosts before it, streaming companies are in business to make as much money as possible. I don't follow the business at all but I expect a bubble-burst similar to when the number of early Internet hosting and search companies contracted and only AOL and Google were left.

I think these FAST Channels are gonna be the future of streaming. People are fed up with subscriptions altogether.

DO need the exercise.
I laugh because often there isn't as much exercise as one would think. There are web tools we used to target locations where we can see the most birds with the least effort. Birders almost always spend more time looking than walking.

I've been on bird 'walks' when we've spent the first 20 minutes watching all the activity around the parking lot. Other times we've spent ten minutes waiting for the appearance of a bird we can hear singing in the brush or high in the trees. Even the most strenuous one I've been on averaged only 50-minute miles (5.5 miles in 4.5 hours).

It all depends on what the birds are doing that day.

I know it’s also broadcast, but ION has one of the hottest sports properties in America.
Was WNBA hot when the contract was signed in April '23? If not, will ION be able to afford to renew for ... '26? Heck, will it still be hot then?

Mostly rhetorical questions to keep ION management awake nights.

The only price increase I’ve tolerated this year is Peacock.

What a great app. Even if it’s not 4K and Atmos compatible.

So you dropped any servies you had that upped their rates this year? Which ones were those?

Thanks!

I get Max free through my phone provider or I’d cancel it too. And I get Flo through NASCAR. Basically all I pay for is Netflix, and it’s next to go, Peacock and Prime Video.

What is the process to gain access to Flo streams through NASCAR?

TV becomes less interesting as the time passes.
Sometimes I feel like telling the cable and satalite providers where they can stick it and cut the cord without any replacment plans.

As the decades pass, we're watching decreasingly less. We're also more selective. If there's nothing on we're interested in, we'll switch to a music channel or a CD instead of searching just to have something on. For the last few years, probably 90% of what we watch are racing, golf, PBS, and Hallmark. We need cable or a cable-like service for three of those, but our broadband cooperative's app handles that. Broadband and app bill is $155 or so, plus $8 or whatever Peacock is.

I spend too much time on my @$$ as it is.

Everything we watch is DVR'd. We are watching at night currently, the full series of JAG, we just finished the "HOUSE" series. We mostly watch reruns of our favorite programs over the years and some we missed due to making a living and lack of a DVR. We watch no Reality bull sh!t shows at all.
