Change Coming to Bristol Again?

I'm already somewhat blue over the idea of the track being changed.

Reallly....changing tracks ....changing race lengths ...changing point structures....adding the chase...remember when it was just about racing. It's like those guys playing with imaginary point systems trying to make one that will give their favorite driver the championship. Why not just let them race .

That was a credible use of my free time :nyanya:
You got a Cup for my guy, so I can't complain. It was a stretch to do it but I sure appreciate the effort.

I have the feeling Bristol isn't going to make the changes like they did in '07. I keep thinking they're going to asphalt. One month has already passed since the race. They started the next day in '07 and had a month to spare with some tests.

We'll all find out Wednesday. He's supposed to make his announcement then. I'm not a fan of changing it at all but people don't seem to be happy with being able to race there. The wrecks seemed to have won out. Whatever happens I'm leaving in 119 days to go there and my butt will be in the seat on that Sunday.

If you're gonna be in that seat Sunday you either missed the race or had a really good time!

DW discusses Bristol changes. Nothing really new here but I found it topical...

I'm going to guess that about 100% of y'all are going to like 50% of this sentence: I loved the old bump-and-run style of racing, and I love the wide syle of racing with lots of passing! (I've only seen the latter in person, however.)
_______________

As for Bruton grinding the top groove to appeal to both sides, I'm not so sure that's a good idea. I'm thinking the fans that like the wide grooved racing will complain the groove is too narrow, and the fans that like drivers having to bump another driver out of the one groove will complain about the groove being too wide. But, I might be wrong. Either way, I'm sure I'll enjoy the race anyway! And hopefully in person again rather than on TV. :D

Personally, even though I love the racing there now, I think that Bristol should be returned to the way it was before 2007. It's what Bristol was known for, and we don't have enough tracks where you have to bump-and-run to pass. Although if there were more short tracks with bump-and-run racing, I would probably say keep Bristol wide-grooved to have a wide-grooved short track.

One thing's for sure, not everyone will be happy. I liked the old track but loved the new one. I'll be there regardless and probably like this version as well.

I think grinding the track to go about halfway back to where they were is a good idea. I doubt it's the one thing that will get Bristol back to selling out every event, but it should help.

It sounds like they are making it really smooth up top with may take away that high groove altogether.

Oops, I've got to correct myself. I meant to say the only version I've seen in person is the latter (new, wide grooved version). I've seen the latter on TV as well.

I thought that's what they're trying to do.

Three drivers will get the first look at the revamped Bristol Motor Speedway as part of a Goodyear tire test scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

The grinding of the upper groove was completed on the 0.533-mile concrete oval last week. The changes are designed to diminish the upper lane and create only two racing grooves.

Tony Stewart, Jeff Burton and Clint Bowyer are scheduled to test Tuesday and Wednesday but rain is in the forecast for Tuesday. The test is closed to the public and media.

The track was resurfaced and reconfigured in 2007 to include progressive banking. The move changed the layout from a one-groove track where contact often was required to pass to a track with two or more racing grooves, which spread out the field and created more side-by-side racing.

The track was banked 28 degrees in the turns on the upper groove and closer to 24 degrees in the lower groove. Track workers did the grinding about 12-15 feet from the outside wall to decrease the banking.

The changes are designed to encourage more rough racing, a staple of former Bristol races. The track seats 158,000 but only approximately 80,000 attended the race in March, sparking track owner Bruton Smith to order the changes.

From here.

I will be at Bristol speedway later today, so maybe I will take a few laps on the pit scooter and see if the track has changed any since the last time I did it. My record is 42 mph but the scooter is getting tired and I have gained some weight, so I will probably be lucky to get 32 mph out of it. LOL

Good luck with that! Post pics.

They were already tire testing when I arrived so I walked up the hill on the backside of the track and gate 14 just happened to be open, so I walked in to the grandstands and sit down for about a half hour and I seen Clint Bowyer, Jeff Burton, Tony Stewart, and Danica Patricks cars running. Danicas car was just bare metal, no paint or graphics. I don't know what line they normally run there but they seem to be running the bottom most of the time. They would run a few laps then come in and have the tire temps and tread depth measured. I would have took some pics but I ran out of batteries at the Indy 500 practice weekend and I havn't picked any up yet. Then I got ready to leave and gate 14 was locked so I had to walk around until I found a place I could get out. I'm getting to old to be climbing fences. LOL

We gotta get you a smart phone, Nitro Dude. You don't even need service. Just take pics then upload them when you get into a free wifi area.:D

Wow. RT @RCR31JeffBurton: Burton in @BMSupdates media center says "top groove is gone. Don't expect to see anyone up there in Aug." -PR

Sorry but no way with what he is doing is it going to be anything close to what it used to be. Can't fool us Bruton. Besides if he thinks all the empty stands are just for that reason he needs to wake up. Ticket prices combined with the lack of hotels in the area don't help. Especially when the hotels charge inflated prices to race fans

Top groove will come back once they lay down some rubber on it. All this has done is make the top groove slower. The way it was you couldn't pass for several laps anyway.

That would work except I had left my phone on the work bench in the trailer. I was going to call Nick who was still down at the truck and have him get one of the scooters out and come up and get me but when I reached into my pocket I realized "OOOPS". I had to walk halfway around the complex before I could find away out. I guess I'm lucky it wasn't Lowes Motor Speedway because I would have had to flag a cab down and get a ride back to the other side of the complex.:)
