Normally they have the oil heaters hooked up to the car. They couldn't do that under the red flag

no telling what kind of fuel injection they are running, might be running lean and burning pistons because they can't adjust for cold air.

FI adjusts automatically for air temp. I think they are just making too many revs in this cool air.

I think it probably has more to do with it being cooler and they are pushing the engines a little harder.

No but they do prior to firing the car up the next day. Heaters are hooked up between sessions whenever the engine has cooled down.
