Conn. senator wants Fox to pull plug on NRA race

Let's be very careful here and not let this become political talk. There is a similar thread in The Podium if you want to politicize it.

Personally, the NRA sponsorship is a business deal. The NRA did NOT pay for "enhanced" coverage from FOX, did not buy any advertising. And beyond the required 1 mention per hour, I doubt anyone will be offended.

This is a race.

media ....and senator.....seems ta forgotten mikey waltrips car sponsor in daytona 500.......... newtown victims fund.

trl---how do i get on the podium ? thanks--john

thanks
maybe senator will do mea culpa........................... an complain bout cup guys "stinkin up nw show" at texas next week ? ha! when is next tv arca race ? ha!

FORT WORTH, Texas -
Texas Motor Speedway's General Manager Eddie Gossage says NASCAR is backing down from its statement that it might re-evaluate the standards for sponsorship.
"It's partly a CYA and partly a statement they are very regrettable today that they made yesterday," Gossage said.
Gossage says he was told by senior NASCAR officials they stand by their choice to make the National Rifle Association the title sponsor of Saturday's race. Earlier Friday, NASCAR said it might take a look at how it approves sponsors after receiving backlash for the NRA 500.
Gossage maintains the backlash wasn't serious and didn't reflect NASCAR fans' views. He blamed the media for creating the "controversy."
"Nationwide there have been fewer than a dozen cards and letters sent. That's not the people that's the media that's trying to fan the flames to make a big deal about it," Gossage said. "It's not a big deal.

Having a problem with the NRA sponsorship regarding Newtown is the same as having a problem with an airline sponsorship or prohibiting muslim crew members at a Watkins Glen event after 9/11.

Allowing nitwits like this senator to smear a law-abiding organization is the sort of politics that are sending a good portion of our great country down the toilet. Hope NASCAR stands up for freedom of speech.

ESPN said that sources confirmed to the outlet that two drivers have been advised by their PR people not to conduct interviews in the Texas Motor Speedway media center in order to avoid the NRA logo from appearing behind them.
The move is just the latest in media hysteria that has resulted from the NRA sponsoring Saturday night's NASCAR Sprint Cup race, the NRA 500.

Pathetic.

ESPN is trying their hardest to make it a story. Everyone has a political agenda. The world we live in....

At least the Tiger Woods penalty at The Masters and Kobe Bryant's injury have diverted ESPN's attention away from this somewhat.

Kobe is the real ESPN story. I'm super bummed!

This is podium trash.
And the comments were too. Does Matthew know anything about the NRA other than the Liberals are using them as scapegoats because they don't have any clear answers. Does he have any clue who makes up the NRA other than what the Liberal Network has been feeding him? Sorry TRL I know this is not the podium, but it looks like it is heading that way.

Everyone has pretty much been behaving on this thread because we dont want it to go to the podium and TRL asked us to be civil, but no, matt has to blow it again. And I for one think he should be booted out for awhile.

He should be forced to only be allowed to post in the podium.

Anybody know which two drivers they are talking about?

This is the most ignorant comment I have ever read on this forum. Talk about shallow.

Did a little housekeeping. I appreciate you letting me know about the objectionable post. I did remove it from some of you who quoted it.

Thanks, again.
Thank you again, have a good race.

I don't give a crap what the race is called honestly.

Anyway about Honey Boo Boo, uh I don't see what's wrong with the show, they love each other, they are like a real family, they aren't like these people on shows like Jersey Shore or The Kardashians. Oh by the way for anyone who thinks they are dumb, the mom has there money going into a trust fund they can't get until they are 18. Pretty smart right there.

Blaze88, neither do I. The only race I really know the name of --- the Coca Cola 600. All the rest --- meh.
For me its the snowball derby, dont know the nascar ones even though I go to a lot of'em.

Im the same way and I am not even sure if Coke sponsors that race anymore but its what I call it. Appreciate the housekeeping. Nascar or any of the teams dont really care where the money comes from as long as it comes.

Let's try to speculate which two drivers it is. I assume it's their sponsors who are being uptight about it.

My guesses:

Jeff Gordon - AARP (Has become a left-leaning organization in recent years)
Joey Logano - Shell (Foreign owned and may want to keep their nose clean of the gun debate)
Kyle Busch - M&Ms (May see themselves as a family-friendly candy?)
Juan Pablo Montoya - Target ("We're not Walmart")

Although, aside from Bass Pro Shops (which sells guns), I could really see any sponsor pitching a fit about that the NRA connection.

Jimmie Johnson and Danica Patrick is who I'm betting on.

Oh yeah , let's get a hate goin for any driver or sponsor that we think might be a party to this outrage . This is STUPID

Didn't mean anything like that at all, Ted. Just wondering who it could be. Some harmless barroom speculation is all.
