Cup RACE thread --- COTA

Late to the party but awesome clean racing at the end!

I guess the secret sauce for this car on road courses and short tracks is the softer tires. Hopefully Goodyear will continue to improve on it and see even more tire wear throughout a run. Interesting to see how Phoenix will play out with the two tire compounds.
I have to agree. Best RC race in a while for sure. I once again had to wait until I calmed down to try to be objective here but I am tired of this stuff with the 1. As I have mentioned before, I don't usually watch the race live unless the weather is bad and while it was brutally cold here in New England yesterday I had some other stuff going on so I did not sit down to watch the race until around 7. I had some wings and fries all ready to go out of the air fryer and my laptop all set up with Max and the TV synced up and I was READY....just to see my driver get dumped on a dumb ass dive-bomb in turn ONE of lap ONE. Just no excuse for it.

I really am curious what others are thinking here. Is this just OK that someone pulls such a dumb move that ruined the day of so many others? It's funny that when Ross pulled his famous wall move a few years ago he admitted it was what he used to do in a video game because what he did there is the same stuff I pull in my video game and think "that's why I could never race."

I will also say I understand the complaints of Fox's coverage for the first time because there was one point where there was a good battle for the lead I think and the camera was blocked by the stands and Fox also did not notice when Chase got close to Ross and had no footage of Ross bailing. I only caught that because of Max and Social Media. Hearing Chase's audio was great as the quotes were "The 1 got wise right there and moved out of our way." Smart move." "He knew it was coming." Also - at one point Chase started like half a lap behind the field after repairing the car and I don't think I would have known that without Max.

Chase had an awesome comeback for sure and to be sitting 5th in points 3 races in after getting Wrecky'd and Chastain'd already this year and getting caught up multiple times at Daytona I'll take it for sure but it just gets tiring. I was sitting there last night trying to think of the last time Chase did something unintentional and ruined another driver's day. The last one I can think of was 2020 at Bristol racing Joey and he just got into the corner too hot and wrecked them both but that was at least racing for the win and not turn one, lap one. I feel like he races everyone with respect but just keeps getting used up and it's not like he has not stood up for himself.

As better as the racing was passing was still tough it seemed -partcularly if tires were even once they wore out some. I was surprised after the first stage as Chase and Alan did not seem to agree on the way to handle the rest of the day. Chase seemed like he wanted to try to nurse it home with track position strategy but Alan rightly was like "no we need to fix it." What really sucked is that he started half a lap behind the field because he did not hear Alan tell him to come back in for tires the fist time so they were doing it with one to go and if not for that, who knows. He was on newer tires at the end but he was about 2 seconds a lap faster than the leaders coming to the white. We never know how things will play out but I feel like this is another potential win gone which makes like 4 RC races in this gen car so far for Chase so I'd like to at least stop hearing about how he has not won one yet LOL.

On to Phoenix where if the racing is good there I will be super-pumped for the rest of the year because to me it will mean NASCAR finally has a good idea of tires and what makes good racing.

I remember going to the 1991? World 600. My brother and cousin carried in a loaded cooler that could hold about 200 cans. The thing should have had wheels. Their commitment to carry the thing from the parking lot, up the stairs, and block the walking paths of many was (foolishly) impressive.

I asked him why would you buy an $80 dollar ticket the get sheet-faced beyond any memories of the race. He could have watched at home and kept his ticket money.

BTW Davey Allison dominated the race.
At the first Brickyard, the two guys between our seats and the aisle started drinking beer about 6 AM. They ended up spending over HALF the race going to the bathroom. They never openly appeared intoxicated, but who wants to score one of the hottest tickets in the history of racing, and spend most of the day staring at a urinal?

I forgot to point out a couple other thoughts on the race as I was too wrapped up in Chase's eventful day....

Kyle Busch - Had to feel for him. Great car - drove a great race and just not enough at the end. May not get another chance like that.

Kyle Larson and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Just wow. Not seen them have a day like that in some time. Not a sign of things to come I am sure but he struggled to make the show at The Clash, was not really a factor at Daytona, almost won Atlanta with a little controversy on walling Cindric and then yesterday. It all comes with the territory in racing and I am sure they will be fine but momentum can be fickle.

I think this is a reach regarding Clint’s scoff, I can’t hear it but that was an egregious error showing the grandstand and was thinking in real time while watching wtf. Fox will Fox.

When you try to go from row 5 to row 2 on the first corner of the race, and are going too fast to make the turn without using someone else's car to stop you, that's not racing, that's a jackass move. Yes, others have done it, but Ross has been around long enough to know better.
Time for a reminder from The Felon.

One that caught me yesterday was when SVG pitted from the lead, they had a triple box. One the roof on board, one his foot cam, and one just following the car. Why?

Clint also made the comment about Allmendinger at the end where he said he had no idea what happened with him. Like I feel like someone should know, I assume he got spun but I haven't actually heard what happened.

It definitely wasn't a great performance by the director or camera crew.

Near the end, during one of the tight battles for the lead, the camera angle chosen was one where basically all you could see was the back of a grandstand. The cars were too close to the front side of the stands to be seen. I don't really understands how that happens. What is the producer in the truck seeing? AS far as the Dinger, I have LONG thought that it should be someone's job to keep an eye out on cars that have a dramatic change in position, make an unscheduled stop or come and go from the garage and pass that on to the booth. I don't care if it's the guy that's been running 38th all day. If he goes to the garage, we should know about it. I also don't know what the right answer for the graphics, but if you are trying to follow a car out of the top 20, (like I was yesterday with Chase), it is a VERY frustrating experience.

I wonder that several times at each race I attend.
This is a thing for me at every sporting event I go to. I had a friend I used to go to Yankee games with that seemed to be more concerned with seeing how many craft beers he could drink for $13 a pop then actually watch the game. I remember going to Loudon years ago with a friend and the first thing we saw heading to our seats was a guy so S--- faced before the race even started that he was puking all over the ground while his buddies were hooting and hollering behind him. I'm no prude or anything but how do you actually enjoy the race if you are that messed up? I was so mad at the same friend we used to go to Yankee Stadium with because he and I went to Pocono one year and he was supposed to be the DD so I could get a little buzzed and he drank so much I had to stop drinking so I could drive home and he could barley walk to the car after the race. Hunched over and passed out in the passenger seat on the way home. Never got that messed up in public.

Do they have coasters a 6 year boy can get a thrill from without being traumatized for life?
Absolutely. For kids I recommend riding Blue Streak, Gemini, Iron Dragon and Wild Mouse. There are a couple really small kids coasters too. That place really has something for everyone.

Well speaking from experience, one beer leads to another and then one more and then just one more and so on. When I drank I really had a hard time stopping until I either went to bed or passed out. I always admired my friends who could just stop or limit their drinking. Alcohol affects some of us differently than others so I really don't try to make sense of why someone acts they way they do when drinking. Kind of like arguing with your wife, some of us know when to shut up and some of us don't. :)

...and regarding your point about the 1 car, one thing that does get to me is when one driver ruins another driver or drivers day and then just proceeds to carry on their merry way.

I must be the only one who thinks the turn 1 incident was just a case of close quarters on lap 1 on a tight first turn. It happens in similar turns in plenty of series without Chastain being on the grid.
Upon further review, from the only image I could find of entering the turn ('WTF' part of original image, not mine),

He's the only one running that line. He wouldn't have made that corner with that approach if he'd been the only one on the track

Very interestng point on both the drinking and the 1 car. For the drinking I should know better having a lot of family who struggle with alcohol that I am one of the lucky ones there that has a good time drinking on occasion but then really does not care that much about it and really can just stop whenever and not miss it. The last time I drank to excess was the Super Bowl in 2024 so a litttle over a year ago. My friend and I just started and the next think I knew my wife was standing in the kitchen saying "what the hell?" because it was 5 am and I had not come to bed yet because we were just talking and drinking and lauging all night. After that, I have barley drank at all.

As for the 1 car I think it's a good point because I did switch over to their radio to see if they said much and I oculd not hear anyhting said about it at all. I have seen no interviews from Ross at all so I have no idea if he has expressed any remorse.

Lmao. Someone had to tell him to stop running everyone the **** over. He was literally just ruining people's day because he was wrecking people. That's not being aggressive that's being a jackass.
Exactly. Earnhardt rattled cages and on a few instances spun someone in the last corner of the last lap in a battle for the win.

Ross drove straight through everyone he came close to in 2022.

Golf is the only other sport I watch. Play usually starts hours before coverage so if there are ceremonies, they aren't shown. Only the opening ceremony for The Masters is ever replayed during coverage, and what's replayed doesn't include a prayer or anthem.

I don't know how ceremonies for other sports are covered by broadcasters. Do they included prayers and anthems? I've always had the impression that only NASCAR broadcasts include prayers and anthem as part of the game / event broadcast itself. I recall from when I watched NFL that network national pre-game shows ran right up to the top of the hour, and kickoffs were usually within a few minutes of the start of each game's individual coverage. Little or no coverage was done of local pre-game ceremonies, excluding late in the playoffs.

I'd prefer pre-race ceremonies be scheduled to fall within the time allocated for the pre-race show, and the command be given two minutes into the race's broadcast window. Moving the ceremonies to pre-race would allow those who want to, to watch them. Those of us who don't want to wouldn't have to try dodging them while waiting for the uncertainty of when the green drops. Plus the race would end fifteen minutes earlier, possibly leaving time for a bit more post-race coverage.

All sports play the anthem before the game, though most of the time it doesn't make the broadcast. NASCAR is the only one that have a prayer.

Respectfully, I believe Bible Belt college football games have a pre-game prayer read on the field over the stadium PA system. I'll be delighted to be told I'm wrong.

Im sure Christian colleges do, but I’ve never heard one at a UF game. I’ve heard them at high school games before. I don’t know if North Florida is considered the Bible Belt or not, but it is extremely culturally southern. To be fair I don’t really watch any pre-race/pre-game stuff anymore, it just isn’t very good at this point for many reasons.

I’m still amazed after all of these years of stages that NASCAR still thinks it’s fine to take this long between stages
I can fix that. No pitting for tires, fuel, or adjustments during stage cautions; repairs only or you lose a lap. During the 2.5 minutes for ads, get the cars in order and then drop the green.

All ya got to do is watch a couple of stick and ball games where they take 20 minutes, with numerous time outs, fouls, free throws, play reviews, and official time outs to play 3 minutes on the clock...and then they go to overtime and do it all over again while you are waiting for the race to start. Anyway, that broke me from whining about it.
