What usually happens on the roof in times like that? Does the offended car's spotter look at you, throw his hands up, and say WTF? Does it ever get physical? It's so interesting to me because it's something we know a lot about (spotting) due to being able to eavesdrop, but then again it's so mysterious to me. I just wondered if there are unspoken rules and a sort of etiquette or code up there. Does everyone understand that they can't control the driver, only give info?
This is a great post. I have always been in favor of promoting all aspects of the sport rather than driver personalities. There is so much to this sport.
Honestly, I think what irritates some about Larson is that he doesn't give a **** without having that attitude or saying it....if that even makes sense. He is enough of a "racer" (whatever that is) to understand that when you are out front, you are going to bump somebody or piss somebody off. The deal is he chooses to apologize. I think it would pacify the haters actually if he would go KFB on somebody. Winners are selfish.

But if he keeps that up knowing there are a lot of fans including children listening to him on the radio then his popularity could drop pretty fast with today's social media. I'm not obsessed with Chase like some are, but I really like the guy and I really enjoy watching him race because he is a pretty good race car driver, and I don't want to see his popularity drop so I hope he listens to his rant and thinks about it some. The thing that comes with being popular is that kids look up to you and you become their role model.

But those cars had so much side force and a giant spoiler they could lean on to hold it through the corners as well as less horsepower. Now they’re running higher power, symmetry and no real spoiler so that car can snap easily around

Reminds me of one time playing football in high school. We were coming off the field (I played offensive guard) and the tackle on my side was confused on who he was supposed to block. I grabbed him by the shoulder pads and screamed "just f***ing hit SOMEBODY!" I thought it was on the field only. Generally you get the wtf hands in the air. I've never seen it get physical and for that matter nobody puts their hands on each other but I've seen heated face to face conversations. If you want to get your hard card pulled thats a fast way to do it and yes, there is an understanding that we cannot control what our drivers do so I've told several that if they had a problem dont talk to me go see the driver in the garage and guess what, they never did. Its pretty much a brotherhood up there and we know things happen we cant control so no need getting bent out of shape. Sure you get frustrated but thats human nature. Now in the lower series I've spotted in where you are with different spotters every week Ive seen full fledged fights but not in Cup, Xfinity or Trucks.

I've listened to it and I think they embellish a lot for entertainment value but I'm just gonna be honest I have little respect for Brett. If there was one spotter that we had a problem with attitude wise it was him. Dude was always mad about something even during practice. I remember him yelling at a couple of guys because Sadler was on a practice Q run and he thought they got in his was when in reality it was his fault for starting him on his run where he did. Just a dick.
On the other hand Elliott having a melt down on the radio with many ears listening? Probably didn't bother his fan base
I think a lot of the younger fans eat it up, but I listened a bit and came to the same conclusion. More entertainment value and playing to the crowd.
And the last thing you want pulled is your hard card. No hard card no access to any restricted areas. You might as well just go sit in the bleachers and watch the race and eat popcorn.

Personally I think the kids would be the ones that would really enjoy listening to the radios. I know they do at the NHRA events. Maybe there needs to be some rules in affect that penalizes the drivers and crew members when they say inappropriate words on the radio so that the kids can listen in. After all this is supposed to be a family event.
That's an idea. Assign a fine for the various cuss words according to their severity. Take the money collected and give it to one of the deserving charities.What about Joe Gibbs?
It's been snowballing. How many races has it been now dating back to last season where they've had an issue of some sort or on track scuffle that ended up benefitting the 5 team and resulting in a win? That's gotta be frustrating as hell when you were just as fast as him or faster in each of those races. It'll come back to the mean at some point but as a competitor I'm sure that stuff eats at you.
The reason we are not allowed to use cuss words here is so that children of all ages can join in and talk about their teams and drivers. I think they should also be able to listen to the crews and drivers talking back and forth. The more people in the family that is interested in the sport the more ticket sales at the track or eyeballs on the tv.
