I am a bit behind, but I just finished the Kerry Earnhardt episode. As much as it isnt my business about drivers lives off the track, I just dont get how you actively dont see your own son for 13 years. That was heartbreaking. And then the first time Kerry goes to his dad's house, Theresa slams the door in his face. Just many parts of the episode I found sad.

Dale Earnhardt is painted to be this All-American Hero type and this image of what a "man" should be, but in all honesty, yeah, hardly somebody to celebrate in many ways. The guy seriously neglected his own kids. Abandoned Kerry, then barely paid any attention to Dale Jr for years. Then there's stuff like mocking Mark Martin's stuggle with alcoholism (that he had beaten after years of struggling) in order to psych him out on track. This is as classless as it gets:

That and Ty Norris back to back really painted a dark picture of Dale Sr. *Puts on asbestos suit* Frankly, I think those stories paint a FAR more accurate picture of the man so many deify than the feel good stories everyone tells. Jr has even contributed, but the way he allows some things to get out ON HIS SHOW speaks volumes to me.

You have to wonder how the narrative would be today if he hadn't died on track the way he did.

I havent listened to Ty Norris yet. I'll start that today on the way home from work. It's really sad that Dale neglected his children like that, and then the whole firing Kerry from DEI the night Dale died I dunno. I kind of...... gosh I hate saying this but it seems like Dale AND Teresa only cared about those kids when it was realized money could be made off of them. Lets be honest, Dale Jr didnt get fired from DEI that fateful night, he was brining home the $$$$ ( which shows he shoulda got the 51/49 deal he wanted at DEI). If Dale Jr was named Brad Earnhardt and didnt have a Cup win at all without the backing of Budweiser as well he probably coulda been axed too. Im not close with my dad either, in fact we are in the same business now and I feel like at times we have gotten closer because we do the same job. My mom practically raised us ( my parents were married, but my dad was just... never home. Always working. or so I was told) so I emphasize in a much smaller scale what those kids went through growing up. I am a huge Earnhardt admirer, I thought he was an American Hero. The Kerry stuff and I anticipate the Ty podcast will take a little shine off that luster for me. I always stayed neutral on Teresa, I dont know her and there's always two sides to each story it seemed, but man not letting Jr, Kerry and Kelly have their 08 late model and its locked away at DEI is pretty heartless and petty.

It seems that way. But DEI was hers either due to a will or because there was not one. Jr and his sister basically wanted it handed to them and I'm sure it just all went down him after that. Truth is always in the middle somewhere.

But yeah, pretty petty to keep something like that...

Ah I always thought I had read Jr wanted to BUY 51% not have it handed to him. I dont think anyone involved handled anything well when it came to the family, so many missteps it seems.

I read that Ed Hinton article and never figured out why Mark didnt kick Earnhardt's ass for dogging him like that in public. Definitely crossed a line I would say making fun of someone's demons like that, and just to win a Championship which in the grand scheme of things........ isnt as important as substance abuse.

The (2) bests things that happened in Dale Jr's life is - 1 - Having a loving sister, Kelly. 2 - Rick Hendrick. Now prove me wrong.

I never heard anything about buying it. It seems tome it was always reported he wanted controlling interest and if he didn’t get it he and Sis were going elsewhere. I could be wrong though,,,,

There's a whole Kerry episode now after the Ty Norris one. Good listen.

It’s commonplace to paint people as a saint after they die, and it’s understandable. Nobody wants to focus only on the bad deeds that someone has done, so they tend to honor people by solely their best deeds.

A mix of both is probably healthier.

I've always admired more so when I was a kid, athletes for what they did on the competitive field, court, or race track. I knew at an early age sure they had skills that werent of this world but the people aspect might have been severely lacking.

Ok so we are flying back From Gateway on Jimmys plane and we are headed into a huge Thunderstorm, Its me Jimmy and Buddy Sisco, Jimmys plane is a Superking, very nice but doesn't have the ceiling of the jets so we either go through or around the storm and the pilot decides to try to navigate it. I'm white knuckle but Jimmy is chewing on his cigar laughing and telling stories about how they almost crashed coming back from Pocono. meanwhile the plane is shaking and pitching pretty bad and all of a sudden we drop what feels like 200 feet and Jimmy yells out *******! Everyone in the plane goes silent for a few minutes and finally Jimmy tells the Pilot Thank you for pulling us out of that, I'd hate for those to be my last words! We all laughed nervously and flew most of the way back in silence and if you know Spencer that is a rare occasion lol.

The Earnhardt kids seem to have forgiven their pops for a lot of things and they appreciate him for what he did for them when he himself grew up. Their kids and their kids kids will never know poverty like Sr did.
