Harvick Rips Dale Jr. For Performance & Impact on NASCAR

I just saw on espn that Tom Brady leads the lead in jersey sales. Harvick is kinda right. Gordon merchandise sales went up 13% for his retirement year. Attendance was up for his last few races. Homestead resell value was almost retail price. Tony Stewart his merchandise sales were down and I could have bought tickets for $9 for his last race.

It's switched recently then. Last I saw the top jersey seller was Lynch. Raider Nation's been buying lots of Beast Mode merch.

Yes, comparisons to other sports are imperfect, but he should be the Tom Brady / Lebron James / Tiger Woods (pre-scandal) / Lance Armstrong (pre-scandal) of his sport. That Johnson's feats don't have the same impact as the mere presence of other more popular "personalities" says something odd about NASCAR and what drives it. That for a huge chunk of the fanbase it's more about culture than competition.
Very well said. More about culture than competition... we see that in a lot of ways IMO. For example, a lot of people are so enamored with the Early Nascar Lifestyle that it totally colors their perceptions of everything that came since then. Nascar has a rich history, no question about that, but the clock doesn't stop.

The best thing that could happen for Nascar right now is for Dale Jr to attach himself to one driver like Byron and be seen anywhere and everywhere with him wearing the #5 gear and promoting the heck out of him. Jeff Gordon should have done the same thing with Elliott as when Dale Jr and Jeff speak Nascar fans listen.
Man, I disagree completely with this. The *only* thing that's distasteful about Jeff Gordon as a broadcaster is his constant pumping and promoting of Chase Elliott and his HMS teammates, IMO. For Dale Jr. to do the same would be equally inappropriate.

I didn't hear Gordon pumping for Hendrick this year, his first year yeah, that's a whole lot of what he knew at first. D.W. got off june bug also.

Jr has been around the sport since he could walk, Sr fan's watched him grow up. He is a third generation Earnhardt driver, comparing him to stick n ball short career players? I guess it makes sense to some, but Autosports has many generational names in the sport and a lot of the fans follow the family. Mears, Andretti, Villeneuve, Fittipaldi, Elliott, Blaney, Nemechek, Burton, on and on. Good or bad their names made a lot of their career's happen.

I don't even really think he pumped up Chase Elliott excessively. If somebody can find me some clips I'd be happy to listen and judge for myself, but from what I remember, he spoke positively about him in what ended up being a lot of positive moments last year. I think there was a pre-conceived notion before Jeff got in the booth that anytime he spoke on the 24 team/driver in a positive manner, it was going to be "biased" and we couldn't label it anything but that. I don't really know what else he is supposed to do - dog him when it doesn't really fit the narrative? I remember a few instances this year where he was critical of Chase and/or that team and it fit.

NASCAR announcers aren't even scraping the surface of being biased compared to the cheerleaders that ESPN, FOX, and CBS hire to call their football games.

The Earnhardts are Deities. Those rings are meant to be kissed by people with the number 3 shaved into their back hair.

Kevin blasphemed.
What?? I don't understand what your saying ? Are you trying To be funny? Once again I'm still trying to figure out what harvick said that was wrong ? I might be new to the sport.. but have you ever heard of stats and history?? Even when I fight watch NASCAR I knew who earndhadt was and by the way people talked about him I thought he was winning every race and I'm talking bout jr

He didn't say anything wrong. The problem is with who he said it about ... 55 year old grandmothers across the nation are up in arms ... up all night posting and tweeting.

If you were siting in the stands a few years back and Jr wrecked out of the race, about a quarter of the fans at the track would get up and walk out. I'm not kidding, it happened.

Kasey Kahne in 202 starts at HMS:

6 wins, 35 Top 5's, 71 Top 10's. Being released at the end of this year.

Kasey Kahne would still have a ride if he hadn't lost his sponsors.

As for popularity, you should see how social media has responded. A lot of fans, even people around here who like William Byron, have turned on Byron in world record time because they think Kahne deserves that ride more.

Quite honestly, Kahne's hung around for a long time because of his popularity. And I wouldn't be surprised if he landed another long-term contract in Cup next year.

It'll be interesting to see how the kid in the Jerry Falwell car does next year.

well if someone called Kyle Busch a donkey's ass do you think you would be a little upset? Some of these people that heard that are the same ones who would get up and walk out of the track.

IMO if you only like someone BECAUSE they win, you're kind of a bandwagon fan.
I posted this in another thread here, but if you remember the 90's, you know the struggle.

No lol.. that's my driver but not my mom or dad haha.. its not that serious.. what makes me upset is the people not letting the guy be who is.. if you think he cries and whin let him do that.. people don't always have to comment on it.

Yep, you get a pass. It's all the "lifelong" Braves fans that emerged around 1991 that I'm talkin' to.
Hell I was born in 91 LOL!

tho tbh I don't follow baseball much but I keep up with the Atlanta teams, only one I watch from season to season, game to game is the Falcons.

Bingo. Gordon has been excellent in the booth. Very impressed, and I have never taken what he has ever said as homer stuff.

well you were having a problem with what Harvick said saying what he said was true.. right, and we all know KDB is a donkey's ass so it shouldn't be a problem it is the truth right.:D, just messing with ya. KDB fans are born with a thick skin

I can see your reasons why. I just feel that some of these young guys almost need to be introduced to the public in some manner other than racing to see if the hook can be baited to get some new fans to check in.

Maybe Harvick is mad because there isn't gonna be a spot at NBC or Fox when he retires? He was setting himself up to be Mr. Broadcaster. Ooops.

No I didn't have a prob with what he said lol, I think it's true with what he said ...and yes my driver says some crazy **** but it's just how he feels haha.. but no offense taken man :)

I love Dale Jr but I don't think his heart is in it anymore. When you listen to him on the scanner he often says he is glad he isn't coming back to this track. I think Nascar BEGGED him to come back for one more year. the way he has been this year I'm kind of glad he is retiring. I'd love to see him win one more time but that is highly unlikely. I think he will enjoy the next chapter of his life. I wish him all the best.

Dale Jr is like Roddy Piper in his later years, the biggest star but hardly wrested cause he sucked at it. But he had the Piper's Pit and was a master showman.

Don't want to give too much attention to Harvick's yap, but I don't think that Junior deserved to be taken out on a stage where Harvick calls the shots. Have Junior call in, and then spew. Lots of words to describe what he did, none of them good.
That is Harvicks style. Always has been. Run his mouth with nobody around.

Never say a bad word about Canada's own Roderick George Toombs as he still rules even though he has been deceased for 2 years.

You really believe that a couple of titles for @DaleJr would add millions of fans and high dollar sponsors back to the sport? Seems doubtful

Jeff Gluck‏Verified account @jeff_gluck
No, that's what I'm saying. I don't think it would have made a difference. Out of all the theories, that's not one that makes sense to me.

Some true statements, but bad racing is what stunted it. Not Dale Jr.

Jeff Gluck‏Verified account @jeff_gluck
Yeah, I would agree. If Dale Jr. won a couple titles along the way, NASCAR wouldn't be in the shape it's in today? Seems hard to believe.

If his popularity is based on just his name, why dosen't Kerry Earnhardt have a huge following? Myself I think he is so popular, because he tells you what he really thinks. That is rare in today's NASCAR. Harvick also tells you what he really thinks, but sometimes it's by accident.
