I figured it was obvious that Stewart wasn't numbered amongst those with which I was referring...I thought I saw Stewart's name mentioned in that post. Oh well, we all knew Tony was washed up a few years ago.

I agree, but on a similar note more drivers have sat in a capable ride and never won a Cup Championship, which also resulted in unhappy and limited funding.

I think going to 4 teams so quickly could hurt SHR. Tony is also building a friends club, and I'm wondering if it will do anything more than make him comfortable.

we dont know if SHR will go to 4 teams. Newman only signed for one year. while i am sure he would love to bring newman back it will be hard to find sponsorship for 2 cars. unless bud is followin harvick.

Overall I am happy with the move, but Ideally I would prefer not to race against a driver that owned my car. Even if you shouldn't you will always wonder about who gets the best hardware, fastest tire changers, hottest groupies etc....

I lost respect for RC when his grandkid told him he wanted the #3 and he let him have it in NNW, on a black car no less. IMHO the kid is trying to cash in on a icon. If he shows up in a black #3 in cup I'll start backing a Ford team.

I'd love to see the black #3 back out there running for RCR. I wish Harvick had done it. Since he didn't I'd like to see one of the Dillon kids do it. I was a long time Dale Earnhardt fan and miss seeing that number on Sundays.

If RC can't get more speed out of his cars , he is going to have a lot more problems than losing you and me as fans . And the answer is not putting the Dillon boys in there . They are five years away from being top ten material.In fact , losing Harvick and Bowyer may be impossible to survive .The sponsors may start to disappear.

I remember a interview when RC said he was keeping the number and it wouldn't be used again except for one other driver and that would be Junyer,,if he wanted it.

I don't have an issue with using the #3, I have an issue of the style of the #3 Dale made famous being used. RC had the #3 before Dale, again it was a different style though. Use the #3, not "the" #3

Damn tootin, Sr. himself will be smilin the day of the Daytona 500 2014 when it runs with Austin Dillon at the wheel with Bass Pro Shops on it. The naysayers better get used to it, its comin.

Glad to read someone agrees. I hope you're right. When he first started running that scheme in Nationwide it brought back all kinds of great memories. It'd be more than a shame if that number were to be shelved in Cup.
I read somewhere recently that Austin will be running the 500 next season. I guess that will be one of a few that he may run.

Technically, numbers are assigned to owners, not drivers, and there's no policy for retiring them. Personally, I don't have a problem with Richard re-using it. Incidentally, Austin was using it running trucks, before he moved up to N'wide. Oh, and the #43 has run an STP scheme several times since Richard got out of it. I enjoy seeing these classic schemes return; I think it provides a link to earlier days and shows team continuity 'bloodlines'. Just me.
That's why all the #8 Dale Jr. / Bud die casts said 'Dale' on the hood. The feds consider die casts to be toys. I have a couple of Jimmy Spencer die-casts with Camel paint schemes from the Winston era, before the federal tobacco settlement banned them.

Anyhow like Johali said I wish it were simply the stylized 3. I really can't comprehend anyone's problem with him running that number under the RCR banner. We see it every single Nationwide race and people don't seem to have a problem with it. Why should they if it moves to Cup? I'm a huge Earnhardt Sr. fan and I'm looking forward to the day of seeing that number running on Sunday's. That black, Bass Pro is a great paint scheme to run it under IMO.

I'm not now nor have I ever been an Earnhardt fan and don't really care one way or the other if the #3 is on the track or not. However, I understand that it has a huge amount of sentimentality for many.

I do think it's weird that Richard Childress was apparently sentimental enough about the #3 and its connection to Dale Sr. to immediately discontinue its use in the aftermath of the 2001 Daytona 500, but now he has no problems with his grandson driving it.

I was hoping Dale Jr. would've met a nice lady friend 'bout ten or so years ago, got married, and had a boy soon after.
Then that #3 would be waiting in the wings while it's pilot would be coming up through the go-kart and 'lil late model ranks.
His name? Why, it's Dale Earnhardt III (the third).
Just a little fantasy I use to have, but that ship sailed a long time ago.
