Interest builds around possible changes to NASCAR schedule

OK, I thought I had a good understanding of NASCAR racing, but I don't have a clue what a "510" race is. Can someone explain for a novice?
Out of concern of speeds at "new" Atlanta we are running the super speedway package. 510 HP Tapered spacer and 7" spoiler

I don't think it's out of concern. I think NASCAR is trying to create a third plate race track because they think fans like it.
With the new surface the cars would probably be flat out even with the 670 package.

You're probably right, especially after reading the quote provided by @StandOnIt. My comment was based on what Mike Joy said during the race, and what I heard him say may have been colored by my bias against expanding the number of short track races.

To me, Fontana is a great race track and totally unique on the Nascar circuit. It would be a crime against the sport of Nascar to tear it down to build yet another short track. (I do understand the economic principles of maximizing the value of surplus real estate... but I hope Nascar doesn't sacrifice the great Fontana racing to seek real estate gains. I also understand that some people regard "more beatin' and bangin'" as the Holy Grail of Nascar... but I'm not in that camp.
I understand both sides of the Fontana discussion.
There definitely are worse tracks on the schedule and if it was up to me I'd rather have Kansas or Texas reconfigured than Fontana. However, it was visible during the race how bumpy the current Fontana track is so it's going to need a repave soon.
There are 5 short tracks on the Cup schedule right now and I'd like to see at least 10. It's not just where the sport comes from, short tracks also provide the best racing IMO.
I do hope the Fontana reconfiguration gets done eventually.

Kentucky did nothing but have great attendance & fanfare for all their races as well.

Can’t comment on the fanfare but the attendance was never great after the first race there

Attendance looks alright to me in 2019 compared to any other track that holds 70-80K. Some empty spots. Probably 50-55K. That’s OK though, would rather they go to Chicagoland & North Wilkesboro than Chicagoland & Kentucky.

Looking back at some of the new tracks……
  • Clash @ LA Coliseum = good move, hope it stays as a traditional Clash race.
  • Bristol Dirt = moderately successful as dirt would prefer the regular track if they can sell more tickets & find a better dirt track.
  • COTA = fairly successful move.
  • Gateway = remains to be seen how the racing is, but good move IMO.
  • Nashville Superspeedway = good move, Fairgrounds would be even better though.
  • Road America = good move, but don’t agree with Daytona not being on the 4th of July.
  • IMS Road Course = not a fan at all, this race should be at the IMS oval or at IRP.
Overall I think NASCAR is making some decent changes but they haven’t added any short tracks at all besides moving a real good Bristol short track race (due to attendance) for a dirt race.

I’d probably drop the Kansas Spring race, Atlanta summer race, IMS road course for Chicagoland, North Wilkesboro OR Nashville Fairgrounds (or 2 Nashville Fairgrounds races preferably North Wilkesboro if the Smith family can get the Truck Series to prove the facility it’s worth again), IMS oval (Brickyard 400) if it were me. And also hopefully Nashville Superspeedway date moves over to the Fairgrounds.

Bristol needs to be labeled with an asterick since it had attendance restrictions. I think this year's race will be the telling sign if this is going to be a success or look at another venue.

Already had better restrictions last year than they did before the pandemic. I love regular Bristol being a multiple race track but not many showed up in 2019.

Nascar just got to rights to the ASA name this week also, so that is something else to keep an eye on
ASA as an electric stock car series running as a companion to IMSA races perhaps?

No doubt. But I thought the discussion here was about the dirt race.

Nascar and IMSA at the same track on a weekend?
Laguna Seca. I wanna see the Gen 7 in the Corkscrew. :whoopee:

More likely, maybe something involving tracks where both organizations already run. Nothing new, just shifting dates. Watkins Glen, Road America, or the lower series at Mid-Ohio or Canadian Tire.

I'm not going to get it, but I'd love to hear IMSA will join NASCAR in Daytona in August with both series on the roval regularly beginning in '23.

It was, I’m willing to bet more people showed up last year than in 2019 when it was a short track race. Damn shame that the crowd wasn’t that great in 2019. Would love to see what Eldora could do rented out or something. Bristol has always had good racing.

Whatever it is it seems to be embargoed. No journos hinting at anything? I’d guess it’s something big.

No e-mails either to us pertaining to this announcement either.

Hail mary, but remember when there was a hunt of news relating to the Peugeot LMH possibly being rebranded as a Dodge?

The fans do though. Highest TV ratings races are routinely Daytona & Talladega

Ok.

NASCAR is inclined to advertise the horsepower rating for various “packages”, as you know.

If we go with torque values, will it be Foot Pounds here and Newton Metres for Lemans? 😇

Doesn't look good for cup but maybe the trucks

North Wilkesboro Speedway
As for what type of racing could be there, Smith was clear.

“I don’t see Cup racing happening in that market,” he said, “but I think if we have local, regional racing, if we have short track racers return to Wilkesboro, this will be hallowed ground for anybody who races short tracks in the entire country. That alone is a big deal.

“If, somehow, someway, we could have a larger national tour series, like you mentioned the Truck Series, it would be beyond the expectation, I think, of everybody involved.”
